This mic was a big surprise. I simply plugged it in to see what it sounded like recording an acoustic guitar, no EQ, Effects or anything, plug and hit the red button and it was amazing. Very crisp, clean, and clear picking up all of the little tiny neuances to the Lows to the highs and everything in between. This also works great for overhead as a drum mic and high hat mic or to mic up and other acoustic instrument. It is worth 3 times the price.

It picks up a lot more than it should, which makes it pretty much useless for me.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST31 Small Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I record on my own small home studio, and was having some difficulty with the acoustic guitar recordings, and miking the drums. This mic seems to have been sent from heaven. It has quickly become my favorite mic. It does a great job of picking up the great acoustics and avoiding the environmental noises which have become common in my recordings. I would recommend this mic to anyone who is budget minded. I would also recomment this mic to anyone who is not budget minded. I have had some great success with this mic. I run it through the Mackie 1404 mixing bord and behringer compressor.

    Great acoustic mic

Comments about Sterling Audio ST31 Small Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

For the price, these mic's are fantastic. I bought a pair for overheads on my drumset, and they capture a lot of warmth, much more than I had expected for overheads. What really impressed me is how they sound recording my martin, it had a perfect mix of low end and sparkle that I was looking for. The company is new, which might account for the low cost, but they have more than impressed me. buy one and check it out for yourself

Comments about Sterling Audio ST31 Small Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I have a small home recording studio at my house (duh) and I use this mic as a drum overhead. The quality is great for the price. From the recordings I've done with it, it sounds very clean and really makes the cymbals on my kit shine. This mic has also served me well micing the drums by itself for a live, or raw drum sound.Bottom line: this is a good quality SDC with a nice price tag.

    ST31 Review

    By TRS-VwqZw

    from New Hampshire

Comments about Sterling Audio ST31 Small Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

Don't know if I got a bad one, but it generates noise. Lots of noise - when plugged into the board. Tried 3 mic cords, all with same results. All my other mics are silent when plugged in. I suspect something is wrong with the mic. For me this sends the message this company makes poor quality equipment.

    Great for overheads and acoustic

Comments about Sterling Audio ST31 Small Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I use a pair of this as overheads on my drums, and I get a wonderful clear crisp sound. It picks up every little detail including delicate jazzy cymbals, and hard tom rolls. The pair setting also works fairly well on acoustic, not a very broad sound, kinda makes the acoustic seem "small" but still has a clean warm sound. For the value, this is the best overhead you can possibly buy.

    Clear, Solid, Clean

    By A Guy-L6fXq

Comments about Sterling Audio ST31 Small Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

Have one for recording my drums. Incredibly clear recording, almost no distortion. Didn't have time to pick up a mic stand, so I just hung it from my drop ceiling - sweet spot seemed to be right above my head for getting my bass and snare higher in the mix without the cymbals blowing it out. Extremely pleasantly surprised with the quality.Haven't used it a whole lot, but my first impression is that of quality.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST31 Small Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I see a lot of reviews about this microphone being noisy and doesn't sound good when placed on cymbals. This microphone is actually designed to work better with louder sound sources like a tom and not so much as an overhead. Although if you place it closer to the source you can turn the gain down and get much better results, even with cymbals. It has an SPL OF 146 which is pretty high for a pencil small diaphragm condenser. I've heard it sound very good on guitar cabs as well. An acoustic that is all wood with good projection will also sound good (especially at this price) if the mic is placed close to the guitar. The benefit is that using it in live situations will provide very good dynamic range due to the specs of a FET condenser and not pick up other sources around it since it has a hyper-cardioid pattern. Reading the specs of a microphone and understanding its uses you can provide more pleasing results when used as intended.

Clean, functional, sound. Can't really beat it for the price. Acoustic guitar sounded like, well, an acoustic guitar. That's what it's about right?
The mic clip that comes with it is a bit too small, but no real complaints.
