OVERVIEW

A more affordable way to record high-quality audio.

The Sterling Audio ST55 is an FET condenser microphone that employs a large capsule with an ultra-thin 3-micron evaporated gold Mylar diaphragm. The ST55 mic is built with an exclusive process that extends high frequencies and improves details and depth on both vocal and instrument recordings. The FET Class-A electronics provide smooth, warm sound.

Sterling Audio microphones employ several advanced technologies that separate their large-diaphragm condenser mics from the rest of the pack.

One of the more important advancements is their Disk Resonator system. With it, Sterling Audio is uniquely able to compensate for the 14kHz frequency roll-off that is inherent in large diaphragm mics. As any good audio engineer knows, this deficiency translates to a lack of sparkle from high-frequency sound sources.

Other manufacturers have typically solved this problem by cutting other frequencies and then increasing the entire signal to help even out the frequency range. Unfortunately, this results in increased noise.

Disk Resonator Technology incorporates a brass umbrella that protrudes from the center of the diaphragm in Sterling Audio's ST55 microphone. It gently boosts the diaphragm sensitivity to shorter sound waves, allowing it to respond more accurately to those all-important higher frequencies. The result is optimal sensitivity, full frequency response, and a low signal-to-noise ratio.

Another piece of audio wizardry comes in the form of the ultra-thin diaphragm membrane made of Mylar. While most modern condenser diaphragms are 6 to 12 microns in thickness, Sterling Audio, in association with 3M, has produced a highly resilient Mylar that measures a mere 3 microns. This allows the ST55 to deliver an extraordinary degree of sensitivity.
Requires phantom power.

For the price it is a good mic. I use it for scratch vocals in the preproduction process. It work well with rappers also, expect a supper hard clip on sillabants and the radius is pretty short.
The -10 db pad works well, the roll off does give a better emphasis on certain instruments.
It's good for the price.
Great Price.

Great for the price range

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I bought this mic after demoing it with the Nt1, and ended up going with the st55. This microphone gives you alot of clarity that you wouldn't usually get in this price range. I am very satisfied with my decision to give this mic a go. The reason i gave it a 4.5 in quality is that it can tend to get a little bright. I was running it through my TG2 which is a very warm preamp and had to work with it awhile to smooth it out, but when i did i got an amazing result. Highly recommend it!

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

This mic is a great mic for the price. i have never liked the sound it gets in a carpeted room. but i cant stand carpet recordings. they take away all of the highs and leave you with a grainy high low end vocal track. This mic works best in a small room with a ton of reverb. (AKA your bathroom vocal booth:P) this thing shines for female vocals.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

We used this to record a bands ep. Great mic if you want a universal mic to use on the go. this is the first mic i grab when i want to a reliable mic. Instead of carrying 5 different mics around.
the -10db and role off are good, i should have gotten the next model up with more options. But this one is great for basic uses
It's amazingly clean. after a touch of 5banEQ taylor for each singer, you will be floored. Its as good as any highend mic.
We used this mic for a test recording because it was the only mic i had on hand. Used it as a single mic for drum over heads, recorded the Vocals, and a acoustic guitar. Sounded as if i was using one of our studio mics.

I also used it as a room mic to record a loud bands rehearsal, It picked up everything as if you were
standing in the room with them bass drum and all.

I helped my friend record her youtube video with this. it sounded legit

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I purchase this mic 2 mos ago and I am happy that I did. I ran this mic up against the Studio Project B1, MXL 4000, and the Bluebird on a gospel song and it really shined. It sounded really good and really handled the vocals expression great. There wasn't too much highs or lows and the mid-range was good. The vocals stood out in the mix. Although, it is no Neumann TLM overall it is a great buy for the budget musician because it gives your really good sound for your bucks. So, if you are looking to get the most for your money buy the ST55 because it sound great, looks good, and built like a tank.

CLEAN and CRISP

By MeckyMeck

from San Jose

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I have used a few condenser microphones in the passed, but this is by far the cleanest in dry recording that I've experienced. Before I used this mic, I would always have major problems with background noises, and the actual recordings did not come out as clean as I would expect. With this mic, I did not have any problems. Everything was just really crisp and clear. I can see myself using this microphone for a very long time.

By GossamerReverb

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I read a less than stellar review above by a "studio owner" with over "30 mics" in his collection and felt compelled to give my take. This is a GREAT mic for the money. I am a co-owner of modest project studio and use this on male vocals, various percussion and in conjunction with other mics for drums and amps. For the price, it simply can't be beat....very sturdy and very reliable, low noise and it's never let me down.Maybe it doesn't have "color" but "color" isn't always wanted or needed. Besides, for someone that supposedly owns a studio and over 30 mics, why are you buying "budget" mics for crucial situations?

Very Smooth Condenser

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I bought this condenser mic and a pop filter for my home studio, which is a Roland BR600. Ha ha. I was using a audio technica dynamic mic for recording vocals. I really like this mic. It is very smooth and warm. I have a small Art tube preamp i am running this mic through. It really helps me control the sound. This mic is crystal clear. I dont have thousands to invest in a condenser, so i got this one. It is well worth the money, however i still like the dynamic mic for certain songs. I am very happy with this mic.

Great Mic For Home Projects

By AlexPosDown

from West Hartford, CT

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I got this mic to do some home recording of an EP that my band is putting out and we used it for vocals, miking guitars and miking horns. Paired up with a SM57 this mic sounds great for horns. The vocal quality is very good, but a pop filter is definitely necessary (we made our own out of a handkerchief and it works fine).

Amazing Mic For The Prize

By Sparky25890

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

This was just an additional mic for my collection of condensers. Let me tell you this is the best microphone here for the price, it even holds its own against my neumanns. I wish it would come with a better shock mount but I have one that works just fine. Also make sure you buy a very high quality cable i recomend mogami.

Excellent mic, great price

By AK-Iwl.5

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I picked up the Sterling ST55 today and love it. I use it direct into the Avid Mbox to record a voiceover narration and it sounds excellent. I also used it to record some sound effects (breaths, claps, vocal bits etc) to use in some of my productions and they came out sounding great. The ST55 has a bright top end, but it works for you in many instances. The 5Hz switch on the mic is handy for recording vocals that are right up on the mic. The only drawback is I wish it came with the shockmount instead of the hatd mount.

Neuman Who??

By K.Oa.k.aSickwitit

from Murdaland

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I actually own this mic for my home studio, it is actually the second condensor mic that i have ever purchased. I have been hearing alot about this Sterling brand but I wanted to stick with MXL. At the time I was using the MXL 990 and for its price it does what it is supposed, so I thought it was time for a new mic so I started looking into the low budget mics, and I started out making a decision between the MXL 2003 or the AKG perception 200. So I went to a local music store and when someone finally decided to help me, he asked me what was I getting the mic for and I told him vocals, and the first thing that he suggested was the ST 55. I really was not trying to even get that mic because like I staed earlier I wanted to stay with MXL. The employee was telling me that the sterling line is like a 3rd party Neuman, So I asked can I hear the St 55 vs the Rode NT 1 and the AKG Perception 200, and I could not believe my ears the ST 55 was so natural and warm sound while the other two mics sounded ok and clear, but they gave you a more cold airy feeling. After Hearing that I knew right then that this was the mic to get. If you are serious about recording professionally then you have to purchase A Sterling ST 55 or St 66.

warm and true

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

Most mics out there in this price range sound 'pretty' because they have a beefed up high end. That might sound good for some stuff but a bit harsh at the same time. This mic is probably the ONLY in its price range that stays flat on the curve. For bright voices, it'll sound much more warm and intimate than anything not priced above $500. If that's what you're recording, you can't go wrong with this mic.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I've had this mic for 2 months now. I've mostly used on vocals and a little guitar. I think this mic sounds great. It's warm, detailed and well built. The ST55 is a great deal for a low budget setup. I use mine with an Art MP Studio tube pre and I'm lovin the results.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I got this mic when I began doing home recording. I went into the store planning to buy an MXL mic with my interface, but the worker recommended this to me, saying that I would grow out of the cheaper mic quickly, but not this one. He was right! I've had this mic almost a year now and it's great for vocals and not bad on acoustic guitar. I've now replaced it with an Audio-Technica AT4040, but I keep it as a backup mic because it is still great. Definately the best mic in its price range. If you're on a strict budget, BUY THIS! You will NOT regret it.And make sure to buy a pop-filter too.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I have an AT 4040, SM 81, and a variety of dynamic microphones I use in my home studio. This microphone sounds great - especially on male vocals. I use it with a Presonas Eureka pre amp. You can put your vocalist a couple inches from the ST-55 with a pop shield, and this mike will capture any performance with no problem.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST55 Large Diaphragm FET Condenser Mic:

I've had this mic for a few years and have had the chance to try out some other mics that are far more high-end during those years. Honestly, it's not as clear and pristine as an extreme high-end ribbon or tube mic, but it can still compete with some of the more mid-to-high end mics. It's definitely good enough for just about any home studio or amateur recording enthusiast. We normally use the ST55 for vocals but we've used them with success as room mics and overheads on drums, and even to quickly mic my entire band's practice. The sound reproduction seems very accurate, as far as my ears can tell, and don't have any sort of background noise or hum.

The build quality seems solid and well-made. However, all large diaphragm condensers are fragile by their nature, so we're always careful with it anyways. The leather carrying case it comes with is kind of a joke. It looks sharp, but doesn't provide much in the way of protection.

Overall, a great deal on a very adequate mic. It'll serve most people's needs, so long as you take proper care of it.
