At the heart of any drum library are the actual samples themselves. Steven Slate has been called the MASTER of drum sounds. In the early 2000's his original drum sample disc was in high demand amongst many top Hollywood producers and mixers. By 2006, when he publicly released his first official drum sample disc, his sounds could already be heard in many top billboard hits.
Steven has recorded only the best drums, all tuned to perfection. Every drum and cymbal has been recorded first to 2" tape, enhancing their unique rich sound. Every drum and cymbal was recorded with multiple velocities and multiple hits per velocity to ensure the most natural recreation. Then the samples were transferred to digital via high end A/D converters at 24 bit/44.1khz.
The samples were then processed by Steven Slate using some of the most classic analog gear from both past and present. The result is drum samples that sound like a genuine acoustic kit, with punchy transients and smooth decays. By listening to the audio demos on the homepage, its easy to hear why many pros call Steven's samples the very best sounding digital drums available.
SSD Virtual Instrument
The SSD Virtual Instrument, powered by Kontakt Player2, is a standalone or RTAS-VST-AU plugin that contains many unique features. Its features preset kits that are easily customizeable by the user. It also boasts many easy to access functions such as OVERHEAD ON/OFF tab, room mic selection tabs, full pan and levels, EQ, envelope effects, saturation, humanization, and more.
The SSD instrument has 3 keyboard mappings with the KIRK EXTENDED MIDI system. This customized GM Extended map makes SSD compatible with many other grooves from other drum softwares. One of the keyboard mappings is even pre routed so that each drum track will appear on seperate tracks in your host DAW.
The SSD instrument also contains mappings for every single Roland Vdrum unit including the TD-3, TD-6, TD-9, TD-10, TD-12, and TD-20.
While you'll probably find many of the drum sets on Steven Slate Drums are reminiscent of drum kits you've heard from various bands over the years, thirteen kits have been authentically modeled for a sound so close, you'll think it is the real thing! Signature Drumkits Limited Edition contains drum kits modeled after Steely Dan, Motley Crue, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Dream Theater. Keep in mind, these drum kits model the finalized mixed sounds that you have become familiar with, not just raw recordings of the drummer's kits. Check out the audio demos on the homepage!
The Steven Slate Drums collection contains two unique sounding sets of room mics. The first set is from a large warehouse with concrete walls. These room mics were processed with heavy doses of compression, eq, and even modulation to make a larger then life, deep, wide, expressive room sound.
The drums were then sampled in the famous NRG Recording STUDIO A, known for being one of the top drum rooms in Los Angeles. Its been home to bands like Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, Billy Joel, and more. These room mics have been left unprocessed and contain the signature depth and space from this beautiful sounding room.
Drumagog and WAV
Each and every drum along with BOTH sets of their room mics are available in raw WAV file and Drumagog GOG file for easy replacement or augmentation of live drum tracks. First copy the drum track, put the "direct" sample on (you can choose with or with overhead) and then copy the original drum track onto a stereo track to trigger one of the two stereo ROOM MIC PAIR samples.

Fat, warm samples, but with only 4-5 velocity layers you can only do simpler beats. A major drawback of this product is the inability to map the samples. This is a very big deal to anyone who does not use a Roland v-drum electronic drum set up. The product comes mapped with midi keyboard controller and Roland v-drum sample maps but thats it and you CANNOT custom map. so if you use Simmons or any other e-drum set you cannot properly use these samples. But the samples arent bad, very produced sounding out of the box so if you are looking for that, then this is your product, if you want more options and more "realistic" sounding samples with many velocity layers then go with BFD2. But a pretty cool little program despite its major drawbacks.
The samples are nice and fat but only come with 4-5 velocity layers so to do ghost notes and such maybe harder to pull off. The niche of these drums samples are a processed sound so there is much less you can do with them when it comes to seriously customizing the sound, what you hear it pretty much what you get. But what you get sounds quite nice and they sit great in a mix with little to no fussing. But, if you do not play a Roland Vdrum kit you might want to look elsewhere because you cannot custom map this software and it only comes mapped for a midi keyboard and roland kits. I also own BFD2 and if you are looking for more raw sounding drums that are extremely customizable you might want to check BFD2 out too. To summarize, I would recommend this product for someone who plays Roland Vdrums and wants drum samples that sound produced and processed and fat right out of the box and doesn't care too much for customizability.
