The Studio Projects 828 is an 8 Channel mic preamp incorporating the latest rev of Burr Brown IC's. The SP828 is also an 8X2 mixer that allows a real time mix of all 8 inputs two a stereo out buss. Housed in a 1U 19" rack.
The SP828 has individual outputs on each channel via balanced 1/4" jacks for direct feeds to any recording medium. Both line level inputs on 1/4" balanced jacks, and XLR balanced mic inputs are on the rear panel. When nothing is plugged into the line input of any channel, the mic/line switch of that channel defaults to a 20dB pad switch.
The output section has a stereo L/R output control and a headphone input with control for real time monitoring. In addition, there are L/R LED meters and a Solo LED for monitoring. The master section output has L/R outputs on 1/4" balanced jacks, and inserts for the L/R buss. There is a summed mono 1/4" output jack for an external feed.
Each unit has an expansion in/out jack to allow for cascading several units together to get up to 32 inputs where all 32 inputs buss to the L/R mix out, while offering 32 direct outputs for remote recording. The new SP828 incorporates an external power supply for clean operation.

This mixer excels in 2 areas, it has a superior pro mixer sound via the high end Burr Brown mic pre's and it's also amazingly compact for the features. You can use it as an 8 channel DI, A passive summing mixer, or a field mixer in an 8 x 2 format.
I have used this mixer for more than a year on the road. I use it as a line mixer for a midi guitar to mix a Roland VG99 with Roland synth XV 2020 and other synths. I also have a Fishman Aura plugged into one of the 8 mic inputs. The sound is very good and the features are usable. However, it is disappointing that the main outs are TRS and not XLR. The out put is down 20db making it hard to get enough level to the house and monitor console. Lately the power supply, (which has a very flimsy connecter) has taken to buzzing very loud in the rack its in. If I hold the supply the buzzing stops. It is now getting into the PA and I will have to stop using it. I like the mixer and the way it sounds but these little things are getting bigger.
