Guitar effects are not good, but I didn't buy it for any of that.
I have been a Tascam user since the 70's and a Tascam 2488 user since the modal was first offered around 2005 as I remember. I have two of them now and my original 2488 probably has logged more than 1000 hours of recording time and still works like the day I bought it (a I mean that in the best way). A friend of mine who recently did some recording on my 2488 decided to get one of his own. He mentioned to me that he read a few reviews that concerned him since he wanted to do his final editing on his computer but someone said that it was very hard to do on the 2488.This isn't true. It is probably a matter of inexperience and Tascam's less than stellar manual that comes with the 2488.

I'll try to explain. It really is not difficult. Since like many digital recorders the 2488 stores each track in it's own digital format or "language". In order to transfer tracks to a computer you need to move a copy of the tracks to FAT partition of the 2488 that is set aside just for this purpose. This is the area on your 2488 hard drive that your computer can acsess. After recording just highlight (click) on each track you want to export on the track menu and the 2488 can move a copy of all the tracks to the FAT partition on the 2488 drive while simultaniously and turning them into .WAV files (Depending on whether your recorded in 16 or 24 bit). After that you attach the USB cable (I leave mine plugged in all the time) from your computer to the 2488 and click "Open" on the USB menu on the 2488. Your computer will display the 2488 FAT drive like any other external drive or jump drive and you can then copy, move or just drag and drop all the tracks on the 2488 FAT partition to your computer. Same thing in reverse to move tracks back to the 2488. One reviewer here said you had to move each track "one at a time" and it was difficult. I can asure you that this is not true. I do it all time and you can move all 24 tracks at once if you like.

If you buy a 2488 also spend a little more and buy the David Wills tutorial DVD. It is excellent and after one viewing you will start recording. Also check out the Tascams forum web site. It is not associated with Tascam but is user run site where you can get tons of help. For the low dollar amount you cannot beat this recorder. It records exactly what you put into it. If you have a good quality microphone, a decent set of powered monitors, you will be amazed. See the Alan Parsons review on YouTube. He loved it.

Good recorder, solidly built and lots of features for the price. I found out the hard way that it takes a Long time to export or master the recorded tracks. As an example, it took 45 minutes to export a five minute song that only included 6 tracks. I recorded our band's 3 hour practice the other day, and it took me basically an entire day to download the recordings onto my computer so I could convert them to .mp3 and distribute to the rest of the band.

I contacted Tascam Customer Support about this issue. Here's their response:

"Unfortunately transferring files to the Fat partition or CD does take time and there isn't any way to speed up that process, I apologize for any inconvenience."

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

Super product that does exactly what it says and it does and then some. I recommend buying the tutorial DVD available on if you search for it on YouTube. While the manual is useful, the walk through is super to get you maximizing all of the features as soon as possible.
The addition of the mastering feature is fantastic. The USB connection makes this unit extremely versatile for people not wishing to delve into the world of ProTools and the likes.
The unit istelf is great and I'm very happy with the quality of the recordings I'm getting through the on-board pre-amps and digital effects. One xlr plug input lost the plastic cover the springs into place when the channel is empty, but that's mostly cosmetic.
I bought this on a Black Friday deal and after having it, I would have even paid the normal price for it.

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

The only dislike is the manual. They lost a lot during the translation from Japanese to English in my opinion. spen the extra $29 and get the instructional DVD, it fills in most of the blanks that the manual leaves you scratching you head over. If the manual had been better written I would have rated the Tascam 2488 neo as a 10.
A lot of thought went into this machine. It has very usable effects. In addition, the various reverbs and the ability to EQ each track individually really makes it easy to turn out quality recordings that seriously border on professional studio quality. The compression featurs is awesome as well. Yoiu may not neeed to compress everything but its there is you need it. 250 virtual tracks make is easy to decide what solo makes the CD and what goes in ther trash.
I have only had mine neo for about 90 days but seems well made. I owned 2 Fostex digital "studio in a box" before moving to the Tascam. The fostex was nice but did not give me the flexibility on EQ or the ability to compress tracks that needed it nor did I have any virtual tracks so I had to get it right the first time or spend time bouncing everything to a new song just to record a different version of a bass line or a guitar line. Sure you could punch in and out but that's not always practicle. MY Fostex MR 16 now serves as a backup should something happen to the Tascam.
For the money this machine is the last word!

its hard to start on the best features this recorder has, but if i must than its the quality of the recordings. there are some reviews they say the guitar affects are not that good, i just can not agree with that. i have found all the
affects to be of the highest stander, and what you record into the neo is what you well here in the end results. if you play badly that is what you're going to here, on the other hand if you play good it sounds so sweet.
i well say this unit well make you sound like a professional did the recording, so if you want the best home studio money can buy the 2488 neo by tascam is the wise choice. i'm so happy that i made the right choice.

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

I have used this for about a year and am very happy with it. It did take some time studdying the manual but once you get it going it is easy as pie.I agree that the guitar effects are rather dull so i run it through my old BR-8 from Boss. Then through a PA system for some fun additions. The only issue i have is getting in to the next track after recording. The lights seem to like to pick their own litte area where they want to record. But persistance get me to where i want to be.I have done over 350 tracks and the quality is excellent, (as compared to the performer..LOL)Great value for your money!

The most liked negative review stated that it took all day to download songs. I think that could be true for that person but only because they did not know the correct way to do it. I had similar problems until I bought the DVD Tutorials available for the Tascam 2488 models. Using the owner's manual along with the DVDs helped me figure out the many things that I was doing wrong. It takes a long time to really learn to use the recorder and understand it's capabilities but once you do, you will love it!!

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

The 2488 I bought from MF in 2006 started showing its age after about 180 finished songs and about as many radio shows. The headphone jack shorts out a channel on a regular basis, and the record button became tough.
The NEO's faders can stand up to any of the big boys. The old fader would drop right off a cliff at about -40db, and it took several attempts to get a good fade on a song. The faders are stiff and very usable. It took me about 2 hours to appreciate the differences, but the torch has been passed to the neo to be the heart of my home studio. The effects are still cheesy, get your own. Same goes with the phantom power. They dropped the drum machine (which I never used anyway), and the channeling is a bit different. But the clean recordings you can make with this recording are WELL WORTH it. The price has dropped now to where it's almost a steal! If you're not into the DAW/PRO TOOLS/CAKEWALK world, and would like a recorder that's more hardware oriented, this is the one, look no further.

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

GREAT DEAL! WITHOUT A VIDEO THE BOOK IS IN PLACES A LITTLE HARD FOR ME TO GRASP IT ALL.BUT THEN I DREAM OF GETTING A 24 TRACT TASCAM REEL TO REEL ANOLOG RECORDER.DIGITOL RECORDERS DON'T HAVE AS GOOD A TRACK SEPERATION IN THE MIXING SOUND ECT NOT TO MENTION TONE AND DEPTH.BUT I'M FINDING TRICKS TO COMPENSATE.ALL IN ALL I'M THANKFULL TO HAVE BOUGHT FOR SUCH A GOOD PRICE AND
I'M STARTING TO GET SOME DECENT RECORDINGS OUT OF IT.
PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE A DIGITOL RECORDER THAT OLD ANOLOG USERS CAN NAVIGATE EASIER.HIRE ME I'LL SHOW YOU HOW TO PROGRAM IT AND EVERY CLASSIC ROCKER ON THE PLANET WILL BUY ONE I PROMISS YOU.
ANY IT'S DECENT AND CHEAP-NOTHING ELSE THAT I KNOW OF COMPARES ALTHOUGH I HAVENT CHECKED OUT ZOOM PRODUCTS.FOSTECK IS ALOT SIMPLER TO USE BUT EVEN THIER 24 TRK ISN'T THIS CHEAP SO I LOVE IT.
WHO EVER IT IS THAT IS SAYING THIS UNIT IS SIMPLE TO USE IS DEFINANTLY HIGHLY
DIGATALLY LITTERAT.I SAY BECAUSE I OWNED A SIMPLE FOSTECK 8 TRACK DIG REC AND IT WAS SIMPLE AND PRODUCED GOOD QUALITY RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX.DON'T GET ME WRONG I LOVE THIS RECORDER.BUT! EASY TO USE I THINK NOT.YOU BETTER HAVE THAT MANUAL IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES EVERY STEP OF THE WAY OR FORGET RECORDING.
THE FEATURES WELL TTHEY ARE COMPLECATED TO USE AND MOST ARE USELESS TO SOMEONE LIKE ME WHO IS NOT TONE DEATH.FOR EXAMPLE;THE EFFECTS DO NOT CUT THRU THE MIX,THE GUITAR INPUT AND APPLICAL EFFECTS ARE TERRIBLE BY THEMSELVES.BUT! USE A LINE 6 GUITAR PROCESSOR ECT AND YOU'LL BE OK.AND THE MIC PRE-AMP IS A JOKE USE YOUR OWN AND MAKE WHATEVER ADJUSTMENTS YOU NEED.BUT! AS I ALWAYS SAY THEIR IS NOT NO SUCH THING AS AN ALL IN ONE RECORDER YET.YOU HAVE TO BUY OTHER PROCESSORS,PRE-AMPS,EXCITERS ECT.
BUILT VERY WELL.IT'S VERY TOUCHY WITH VERY SLIGHT POWER DRAINS AND SURGES.
IT HAS TOTALLY FROZEN UP ON ME AND I HAD TO TURN IT OFF AND ON AGAIN AND LOST THE TRACK I JUST RECORDED-I THINK IT WAS A POWER DIP OR SPIKE?NOTHING ELSE WAS AFFECTED.SO BACK YOUR RECORDINGS UP ON DISK,IT'S EASY BUT TAKES A WHILE.
EVEN THOUGH TO AN OLD ANOLOG RECORDING FREAK LIKE MYSELF IT IS A LITTLE COMPLICATED BUT HANG IN THERE AND LEARN THE MACHINE AND IT WILL GIVE YOU DECENT RESULTS...GREAT RESULTS FOR THE MONEY.
    OVERALL QUALITY IS GOOD..EFFECTS-POOR, E/Q-MARGINALLY FAIR.ONBOARD GUITAR PROCESSOR-BAD,MIC PRE-AMP DON'T ASK!ONBOARD DISK RECORDER HIGH QUALITY
BUT THE RECORDING NEVER SOUNDS LIKE YOU HEAR IT THRU THE MONITORS OR HEADPHONES,BUT YOU GET USE TO JUDGING THE SOUND.I WISH THEY STILL GAVE YOU A VIDEO ON THIS THING I NEED ONE! I'M STILL GLAD I BOUGHT IT.
I GOT MY NEO ON SALE FOR $499 BECAUSE THEY HAD TO PRICE MATCH A COMPETETOR
AND THEY FOUND THE SALE AND MATCHED IT FOR ME.I LOVE THESE GUYS I SAVED OVER $600 ON MY ENTIRE PURCHASE.I GOT ALMOST $1700 WORTH OF STUFF FOR $1007.THANKS FOR THE GREAT DEAL ON MY RECORDER EVEN THOUGH I STILL HAVENT QUITE LEARNED HOW TO USE IT YET BUT I'M GETTING THE HANG OF IT.THE RECORDINGS ARE SOUNDING BETTER AND BETTER AS I USE IT.YOU CANNOT BEAT THE VALUE AND YOU WOULD HAVE TO BUY A $1800 ROLAND TO COME CLOSE TO THE QUALITY.

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

I upgraded from a Fostex MR-16 because I wanted the additional inputs. The Fostex only has 4 while the Neo has 8. I really needed 6 inputs for similtaneous recording of six separate tracks in a small band. I found the Neo to have good quality and works as advertised but also found that my workflow slowed down a great deal due to the process required to move files in and out of the Neo. The Neo requires that you transfer tracks from the working partition to the FAT partition in order to export them to a PC. This process is very slow. Six, eight minute tracks can take almost an hour to transfer to the FAT partition. All six tracks can be selected and transferred at once and this is is what I am referring to. It would be much worse if you had to do a track at a time as another reviewer mistakenly reported. Once the tracks are exported to WAV on the FAT partition you can then export them to your PC via USB. The Fostex MR-16 allowed direct access to the tracks as WAV files through the USB connection and some included software eliminating the extra, time consuming, step the Neo requires. The Fostex arrangement suited my workflow much better but the Neo is a superior unit in almost every other aspect. If you intend to use this to produce your finished work and rarely expect to move tracks to and from a PC then this is a great unit. The recording quality and features of the Neo are very good. For those who just want an external multitrack recording unit but intend to use DAWs for editing then this might not be the best choice.

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

This is my second 2488 - I owned the original version, and when I wanted to upgrade/renew my gear, I went right from that to the Neo, without stopping at the MkII.The Neo offers more HD space, which is great. It also has slight changes in the button layout and function, which isn't much to get used to, but is a change from the original. Soon you won't notice. What you might notice is that the original had a MIDI/Tone Generator, which gave you the ability to do drum tracks right on the machine. Many people really like this - it's similar to the BOSS and other machines - but I've got a separate drum machine going through my mixer and I just put my drum tracks on like any other instrument. It does take up track/s, but I'm too lazy to learn to use the internal one, so when they left it out of the Neo, I didn't really care. People who used it like it should be will probably miss it.Overall, I'm really happy with it, as I was with my MkI. It's relatively easy to use - once you've learned your way around it, it's a no-brainer. There's a lot of features and capabilities you have to learn to use; but it's like MS Office - few people use more than 5% of it's capacity, and yet it does a great job with just that much. The only gripe I have - hence the lower quality rating - is that the internal software is a teeny bit slow; once you've mastered the use of the controls and so on, your mind an fingers move WAY faster than the machine can respond to. So you sort of learn to pace yourself with it's timing, instead of the other way around. But it's not a dealbreaker...

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

I owned a Fostex 8 track digital for 3 years before moving to this one. My band required real time inputs for all the mics and guitars. The 2488 Neo has it with 8 simultaneous inputs. However, you need to really read the manual and practice using this recorder. It does pretty much record what you put in, and good mics and pre-amps are essential. Going from my Fostex 8 track, was a giant learning curve, although it was easier to lay nice sounding tracks on the Fostex, you will need to work a little harder on the 2488 to get those nice sounding tracks. Files for uploading and downloading does take long, but if you burn a CD from this machine you can rip it onto your computer much quicker; or you can upload the wave file which will take longer and will be a large file. I feel the 2488 Neo is worth what you pay for it, but if you plan on using your computer in conjunction, it will slow things up and will also create some frustration. There are many good features on this recorder: effects, mix down, mastering, EQ, faders, and editing controls. Learning them will be the challenge. I recommend you buy the 2488 video which is concise, and easy to follow. I have owned it now for two weeks; have laid down some nice tracks with the band. Once you start using it on a regular basis, it will become pretty easy and gratifying to work with. By the way: The manual that comes with it is not as bad as been reported, but the DVD will move you much faster and explain some of the function where the manual leaves off.

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

Being over 55 I also, I have to agree with the over 40 reviewer who wrote about this being difficult to learn for those of us who lack computer skills. It should also be noted that I am very well educated, but not in this area. I've had to read, then read again, the instrutions on every thing I go to do on this recorder. I don't feel that it is fact to say this recorder is user friendly. For those who are gifted in the area of recording, then I'm sure you will find it simple to use. Those that have never owned a recorder, and no nothing about units of this nature, they may find this more difficult than others. I don't use the guitar effects because I use my guitar amps when recording. It is a good buy for the money.

    .
I am a "seasoned" musician of 40+ years. For the price of ONE session at a nice recording studio you can own 24 digital tracks with a mixdown channel and multi effects. It is extremely user friendly and if an old guy like me can use it anyone from this hi-tech generation can. I cannot say enough about this machine and when you combine it with the great deal on the price it is simply an unbeatable bargain.

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

My 2488 has about ten minutes of use and will no longer load at power up. Sent it back to Teac under warranty and they are charging me labor. This is a load of Bull! I like tascam recorders, that's all I have ever owned. I now have a spare DPo1 because I don't want to spend the time learning someone else's recorder. Tascam warranty stinks.

    Quality and convenience

Comments about TASCAM 2488 Neo 24-Track Digital Recording Workstation:

This recording workstation is a great combination of quality, convenience, and value. First, the construction is strong for being mostly plastic on the exterior. The faders, buttons, and trim knobs feel very nice. It all looks good as well as functional. Now, this product, if this is one of your first recording workstations, will take some learning to use. I read the manual, which was helpful, and watched video tutorials on the 2488neo as well. It is not difficult to learn if you have the patience to spend the time to get to know the device. If you are serious about recording and music, you should want to learn everything about the product you are using. Making your first recording is easy and quick to start. All the EQing and editing will get easier with more experience. I will say that it would be much easier to raise and lower levels of different segments of tracks would be much easier in a DAW software but this device does more than enough for the learning recording engineer and musician. For the specifics on what this device can do j suggest reading the manual, which you can read online before you buy it, that's what I did. Value-wise, this device is worth every penny that musicians friend sells it for. It is perfect if you are not ready to buy a computer, interface, and DAW.
