Purchased the DP-006 as SDOD special and am amazed with the sound quality and compactness for the price. There is no LCD back light on this recorder but the LCD is fairly easy to read under a reasonably good external light source. The menu structure is fairly intuitive. I had a little difficulty exporting a file to a wav format because the option is not allowable in the master recording menu where it would seem logical to implement an export option. However, the overall structure of the menus are easier to decipher than some other multi-track digitals I have used in the past.

I was surprised with the quality of the built in microphones. The built-ins offer three level controls and pick up well with the instruments I have used (acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica, button accordion). I've also experimented with the line in controls using electric guitar, analog and digital synthesizers and a mixer - so far so good. The recorder seems to process levels very well and I have had less problems with going under or over sound levels than on other portable machines.

Overall, this recorder is a pleasure to use. Even though it does not have built in effects, the overall sound quality sounds superior to the other recorders I've used (Zoom PS-04, Fostex 8 track). I am not a professional sound person and don't have a lot of interest in tweaking microphones and levels to get the perfect recording. I just want something that sounds clean, will allow for some separation when I desire it and won't sound too condensed or clipped in the final result. This recorder seems to fit the bill for someone new to multi tracking or someone who wants a quick way to get musical ideas down before finalizing them on a more professional platform.

Another feature I like with the recorder is that it takes SD cards and can handle 16 gig cards without a problem ( read Tascam's list on approved cards before you buy extra media). My other recorders take media that is hard to find and very restricted in size. The tascam allows me to pop in an SD card available almost anywhere and record without having to worry about taking a bunch of extra memory cards or running out of recording time. The recorder's method of formatting is a little strange but useful- it formats some of the card for proprietary use and then formats a separate partition that your computer can access. I didn't like this feature at first but it seems to work very well. When you export something to a wav file it is placed on the partition your computer can retrieve. This multiple formatting feature prevents having to access a bunch of folders or strange files when it is time to transfer the file to a computer.

So far, I'm very pleased with what Tascam has done with this recorder. If I decide to go with something larger in the future I will definitely check out their product line based on my brief time with the 006.

The DP-006 isn't nearly as easy to use as other TASCAM recorders, such as the DR-05 (but that doesn't multi-track). That being said, the DP-006 is still capable of making some excellent recordings. The key is to watch your levels very carefully (a limiter function would have been nice). If you record acoustic instruments with the internal mics, put the unit on a tripod and get as close to the instrument as possible. Trying to record an acoustic guitar from across the room just won't get it. Also, I recommend you export your tracks and post-process and mix them in your normal DAW software. The master mix in this unit is a joke and has to "record" the final mix in real time once you specify the start and end points. Saving the tracks seems to take place in real time, as well - a 3 minute track seems to take about that long to save - for each track! Quirks: After doing lots of takes, frequently says it is out of space when in fact there is ample room on the memory card. Metronome on a saved song shows whatever you set it to last, but in fact reverts to default 120BPM until you go back and refresh the BPM setting.

Comments about Tascam DP-006 Digital 6-Track Pocketstudio:

This little recorder is perfect for putting down ideas and arranging demo's. At least what i used it for any way. It takes a little getting used to if your not familiar with multi-track recorders but all in all its not complicated. Read the quick start guide, fool with it then read the rest of the instruction and its all gravy. I know for a little more money you can pick up the 8 track with a back lit display and a few more features, but i got a killer deal for the stupid deal of the day, half price!! couldn't pass it up. I cant say enough good about this piece of gear. editing is also easy once you learn it. cant go wrong for the price. i gave it four stars ONLY cause of the lack of a back lit display.

Comments about Tascam DP-006 Digital 6-Track Pocketstudio:

I got this to replace my Tascam 424, purchased from MF back in the 80's. It is not as powerful (e.g., does not have effect send/receive), but suits my needs perfectly. I usually just need to lay down a backing track for practice.
I agree with the other comments that the DP006 is difficult to (learn to) use. My suggestion is to read the 100+ page manual cover-to-cover first and try each of the examples. After about 1 1/2 weeks of use, it's getting much more intuitive.
I would give it 5 stars if they had included an AC power supply.

Comments about Tascam DP-006 Digital 6-Track Pocketstudio:

I remember using a Tascam for recording with a friend back in '87 and thought I couldn't go wrong with this device. Unfortunately, I was terribly wrong.

I bought this last year and used it over the last 10 months for about a total of 2 hours of recording time. The last time I used it it just powered off, mid session, and I couldn't turn it back on. It was simply recording with the mics. I've changed batteries and could not get it to start up again. The buttons flashed red and I got some horizontal lines on the display, but the device wouldn't power up. Very dissatisfied. I contacted Tascam and they will pay for the parts, but not the labor, which is quite costly.

The last recording device I owned was a four track reel to reel. Old school. My mind set was in a by gone era. This device is nothing like that. It is and attachment for a computer. It took me a while to absorb all of the instructions. I finally got it. This device makes excellent recordings. The sound quality is impressive to say the least. You would have to spend a lot more money to top this recording device.

I got this as a stupid deal of the day. For 150, this might be a little pricey, but for under 100 it's a great deal. Not quite a pocket recorder, but for a lightweight multi-tracker it's awesome. Good mics and line-ins. Haven't used it too extensively, but the battery seems to be holding up (I plan on using the 5V power in, too.)
Only nit is that there's no external speaker, so I have to remember headphones. Kinda makes sense for a multi-track; on the other hand, this isn't for professional recordings, so it could be a little more convenient.

As a pro Musician in Contemporary Christian Music, I don't get much studio time, unless I'm in my own studio.. This recorder is great for checking my count, staying on beat, and playing it back and finding "BAD HABITS".! Even before they become habits... It helps when running a new song, I can record the original song, play it back as often as I need to to learn it, then record my self and the band playing the same song, on a different track, and see how they "MIX"..! I highly recommend this unit, and the new models coming out soon.. They just keep getting better, and better...

I bought this unit as level 1 and it is like new.I have the DP-004 and this unit is very similar. I have used the 004 to record tracks and for practising for my Music ministry live performances. I also made a demo to play when I joined the band I was in. The 006 only adds a couple of features but I thought I would get it at this low price to have a back up and also to see what the stereo on tracks 3,4 would do. These machines are true CD quality and the only downside is that the output track can be a little low on audio. It is best to boost the tracks and mix with computer but the unit will do a good job of mastering and I really like it.

Comments about Tascam DP-006 Digital 6-Track Pocketstudio:

This is a great little thing to have to do demos. You can do your basics, and a couple of overdubs, to give you an idea of what your song is about.

It's actually quite easy to use. The learning curve is simple, if you are experienced with other kinds of recorders.

        But a couple of things......

First, the RTZ(Return to Zero) is slow, if you are accustomed to DAW's, and instant return to the beginning.......but having grown up in the era of reel-to-reel and cassette, myself, this really isn't a big thing to me.

The second issue is the biggie.....and that is the inputs for instruments are just not HOT enough. Having a stomp box from your instrument will bring it up....but really and truly, you shouldn't have to resort to doing this.

After all, this is supposed to be portable and basic.

Otherwise, it fits the bill. No "whistles and bells" expected. But everything else is great--
portability, overall sound, price, ease of use.

I only wished that the levels were a bit hotter, that's all.....

Comments about Tascam DP-006 Digital 6-Track Pocketstudio:

To begin with, I am new to recording, but not new to playing at all. I've been playing for about 10, or so, years, and, after fiddling with a bunch of microphones in a sad attempt to record music, I decided to buy this.
This little thing seems like a toy, but it puts out a powerful sound. I, being a noob at recording and all, found it a bit hard to get it to function the way I wanted it to, but Youtube has helped with that.
The sound this little thing produces can be so versitile. The settings allow you to be able to play quietly or over load the thing to get a choppier track. Its compact design is great if you want to move for better acoustics, ect. Heck, I even recorded a man-made dam by my house to add to my song.
The TASCAM DP-006 is great for a beginner. Personally, I cannot go into many logistical statements about how "this" is better than "that." But it produces a great sound, no matter if you want a clean or distorted sound.

Comments about Tascam DP-006 Digital 6-Track Pocketstudio:

I got this recorder as a Christmas gift from my wife. It's the coolest thing i've ever had. I had read reviews that said it was too complicated to operate but i totally disagree with them. Within 2 hours of opening it i had recorded a 4 track song. The internal mics are a plus and sound pretty good.Battery life isn't as bad as some have said but i mostly use the a/c adapter (Which i highly recommend getting). It's also very handy for making backing tracks to practice leads to. I highly recommend it!

Comments about Tascam DP-006 Digital 6-Track Pocketstudio:

We use this for recording church services. Used a DP004 for years but seemed to be having some issues and I wasn't sure if it was my helper or the machine. Picked this up so cheap it was an easy decision. I just wished they both recorded in a standard format so we didn't have to "export" - which converts it to a .WAV file (no choice about that, either).

THIS IS THE FOURTH TASCAM PRODUCT THAT I HAVE OWNED, AND I AM WELL SATISIFIED WITH IT. I USE IT FOR SONG WRITING/ROUGH DEMO WORK. THE ONLY POBLEM I HAVE ENCOUNTERED IS A LOW OUTPUT LEVEL TO THE COMPUTER. IT MAY BE SOMETHING THAT I'M DOING WRONG, BUT IF I ADJUST THE LEVELS TO KEEP FROM GOING INTO O/L, THE OUTPUT IS TOO LOW. OTHER THAN THAT, IT PERFORMS VERY WELL.

Comments about Tascam DP-006 Digital 6-Track Pocketstudio:

More features than my good old PortaStudio at a third the price, 1/10 the weight and size, and with 100,000 x storage capacity. Simply a wonderful tool for players and songwriters to pack around in our instrument cases. I have to use the manual to do a few things, but thanks to its similarity with the PortaStudio, so much is obvious. The menus are also not so deep that I can usually just search for the function or setting I need. OK, I haven't had it but a few days yet, but it's feeling like an old familiar bit of gear already. And it fits in my guitar case, has a tripod mount on the back side, and built in mics that do a fair job of grabbing the room thanks to the lo-mid-hi options and the trimpots on the inputs. The buttons and knobs are right off traditional analog recorders, so it's really easy to navigate and work with. Thanks to the SD card storage and USB, I can move files when I need but have LOTS of capacity to work with. I'm happy with mine. Did I also mention that it's extremely affordable?
