I have played guitar, harmonica, and sung for many years and wanted a good quality recorder at an affordable price. I researched and purchased my Tascam DP-01/FX/CD All In One back in the beginning of 2007. My first CD is almost complete. I have found this system to provide clear recordings with easy to use functions. I had two songs recorded at a professional studio and this unit compares favorably with the multi thousand dollar units. It will take a while to get adjusted, however, that time will be well spent when you hear the crystal clear recordings that you make. All the accessories are great. Perfect for the one man band and recording friends.
I've had this harddisk recorder for about six months now, and I have to say it is well worth the money. I have more than 20 years experience multitracking, but this was my first real foray into digital recording. This machine makes recording fun. It is simple to use--one of the reasons I bought it in the first place--and it produces very clean recordings. The sliders and one-touch record function make redoing a track very quick and easy, the system of "arming" tracks is intuitive, and the reverb is not bad at all. There are some nice editing functions as well. On the downside, the effects, which are pretty good, can be applied only during the recording stage and, for some reason, cause a substantial decrease signal. So for the most part, I don't use the onboard effects other than reverb, which can be applied later in the mix. But if you hook up an external effects unit, you can add your delay, chorus, etc... but you can't use the reverb. As far as the package goes, the MXL mic is a decent all-around instrument/vocal microphone, but those monitors distort very easily. Overall, you can get some very good recordings out of this machine, and the package is well worth the price. I originally bought this to record solo piano/jazz trio stuff. But I think I will soon outgrow it. I wish this unit had useable effects, at least a three-band EQ, and a built in drum machine. Only having two simultaneous recording channels also limits what you can do. However, Tascam makes quality equipment. Maybe a 24-track machine is next.
