OVERVIEW

Album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

TASCAM's DR-05 brings high-quality stereo recording to an easy-to-use portable powerhouse with a size and price that anyone can handle. The DR-05 records in MP3 or WAV format, including 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio to microSD or microSDHC media. A pair of all-new microphones handles up to 125dB SPL with the sensitivity to capture every detail. With new recording features like Peak Reduction and Quick Menu, the DR-05 puts album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

Premium-quality Sound
Everything about the DR-05 is designed to get the best quality recordings of your music. A new pair of built-in microphones withstands up to 125dB SPL -the volume of a jet plane from 200 feet away-yet still have the sensitivity to capture every detail of a performance. You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it.

Internally, the DR-05's digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to improve noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality -over 92dB signal-to-noise ratio; under 0.05% total harmonic distortionl and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 24-bit/96kHz resolution.

Simple to Operate
The layout of the DR-05 has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button-press away. Dig deeper to find features like limiting, low-cut filtering, a built-in chromatic tuner, and more.

One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording.

Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitch-perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17 1/2 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

Useful and intuitive right out of the box crisp clear sound with easy level control and plenty of recording headroom, heck they even give you a 2 gig mini card to start, but you can always upgrade with inexpensive micro sd. Do yourself a favor and hit this before they're gone. Easy to use computer interface via USB to yr favorite audio mixing program. I am very satisfied !

After two weeks of use, mine is going back. I found it too noisy to make decent ambient recordings. Ok, fine. It's cheap. I thought I'd keep it around as a song writing scratch pad. Well, problem with that is, this thing chews through AA batteries like mad. The ones that came with it were dead after about 20 minutes of use. I thought they were just bad. Brand new duricells lasted about an hour. These two things in tandem - too noisy for good field recording, battery hog - kills the deal. Maybe I got a faulty device. I'll do an exchange with MF and repost a review if it was simply bad luck.

Comments about Tascam DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

I grew up in the 70s with portable cassette recorders. We used them as toys and in hindsight, they were pretty neat little devices. We spent hours recording ourselves and playing it back, laughing. It was so easy, every child could do it--all you did was press the record and play buttons simultaneously and talk into the mic. With the demise of analog technology, I haven't seen much available to replace cassette recorders over the last 20 years. Until now. This little device fulfills the same function perfectly and so much more powerfully! Great for any type of portable recording, be it as a sketchpad for your own song ideas, quick-and-dirty recordings of your playing, field recordings, concerts, sound effects collection--you name it. And the quality of the built in mics is very, very good. It's just as easy as the old cassette recorders, too. Press the record button once to monitor the input levels, and again to start recording. Press stop to quit recording. To transfer the file to your computer for editing/sharing, just plug it in and drag/drop the file. Highly recommended! I feel kind of like a kid again :)

Comments about Tascam DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

I had hoped the DR-05 would be an easy to use, quick set-up device?! But, sorry to say this is not the case. Tiny print directions: Hard to see and use buttons; Hard to follow instructions.

Best value out there. Top quality and works like a professional recorder. Throw out the manual, however, and just watch a couple of YouTubes on how to use it. You will not regret your purchase.

Comments about Tascam DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

Just got my Tascam DR-05 and I am really happy with the upgrade of my recording quality. Albeit, I was using a Sony IPC recorder before for recording and that isn't made expressly for recording music, the sound quality with the DR-05 is noticeably clearer and richer. One comment, I don't like the "auto level" capability at all, it starts recordings with levels all the way up (very loud in the opening) and then reduces levels in a noticeable and annoying way. Don't use that setting. Otherwise, very happy with the device.

Comments about Tascam DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

This has long battery life. It can fit in a pocket.

Infinite tracks and overdubs are possible, before using mixing software, or individually mixed afterward with software. Files can be recorded in lossless WAV or mp3, with quality selections. A ton of memory, stored on the provided micro-SD. Also included are a USB cable and 2 alkaline batteries, and different battery types when used can then be selected on the unit for best efficiency.

It is very sensitive, and has low volume cut and a high volume limiter, so one may record a raw sample with no clipping, or select a specific volume range. Also it has an automatic adjustment for avoiding clipping, if chosen.

It has a setting for hearing through headphones the environment as you record the track, or without recording. It can even be used at a park or any place to hear a universe of sounds surrounding, volume adjustable.

I've composed songs on it, revived old ones that I can now layer, recorded my cat purring, and also it's easy to start up and play free form, which makes accessable improvisation without observation or predetermined rules. It is also a learning tool, because one may make backing tracks, with infinite layers.

All functions are easily accessible with a handful of buttons, described in an easy to understand, user friendly PDF online, the link shown in the basic manual which comes with it.

It has reverb effects. Tracks can be split, marked, and stereo or mono settings enable file sizes to be halved by selecting mono. Fast forwarding or rewinding as well as volume or input volume are a press of a button. It can power a microphone other than the two it has.

It has repeat functions for individual files, or all files, and deleting files after sessions is very easy and fast. It has a simple but effective equalizer for playback. It does have a speaker for playback.

The packaging protects and stores it well. It takes only a few seconds to start up or shut down.

I like the spontaneity and sensitivity.

Comments about Tascam DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

I purchased the DR-05 for field recoring and for recording audio for a video project. It's a good tool for recording ambiences and live performances "in the room." I would recommend a wind screen or "dead cat" attachment, however, because the mics pick up every little breeze that strikes them. There is an input for a "shotgun" or lavalier mic, making this suitable for recording interviews. Resolution of recording can be set as high as "24/96," if you wanna get "archival" about it. Overdubbing and reverb can be added, if you're using this for recording demos or making informal instrumental/vocal recordings. There's even an instrument tuner built-in. My sole complaint about the function or design is that the battery compartment slides open too easily; a bit of tape at the seam might be found necessary.

I use this to record samples of my singing along with back tracks through my Mackie Pro FX PA system. As long as you control the output volume and watch the input meter on the DR-05 device, there is no distortion. I would buy this again.
