Album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.
TASCAM's DR-05 brings high-quality stereo recording to an easy-to-use portable powerhouse with a size and price that anyone can handle. The DR-05 records in MP3 or WAV format, including 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio to microSD or microSDHC media. A pair of all-new microphones handles up to 125dB SPL with the sensitivity to capture every detail. With new recording features like Peak Reduction and Quick Menu, the DR-05 puts album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.
Premium-quality Sound
Everything about the DR-05 is designed to get the best quality recordings of your music. A new pair of built-in microphones withstands up to 125dB SPL -the volume of a jet plane from 200 feet away-yet still have the sensitivity to capture every detail of a performance. You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it.
Internally, the DR-05's digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to improve noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality -over 92dB signal-to-noise ratio; under 0.05% total harmonic distortionl and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 24-bit/96kHz resolution.
Simple to Operate
The layout of the DR-05 has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button-press away. Dig deeper to find features like limiting, low-cut filtering, a built-in chromatic tuner, and more.
One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording.
Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitch-perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17 1/2 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

Useful and intuitive right out of the box crisp clear sound with easy level control and plenty of recording headroom, heck they even give you a 2 gig mini card to start, but you can always upgrade with inexpensive micro sd. Do yourself a favor and hit this before they're gone. Easy to use computer interface via USB to yr favorite audio mixing program. I am very satisfied !

After two weeks of use, mine is going back. I found it too noisy to make decent ambient recordings. Ok, fine. It's cheap. I thought I'd keep it around as a song writing scratch pad. Well, problem with that is, this thing chews through AA batteries like mad. The ones that came with it were dead after about 20 minutes of use. I thought they were just bad. Brand new duricells lasted about an hour. These two things in tandem - too noisy for good field recording, battery hog - kills the deal. Maybe I got a faulty device. I'll do an exchange with MF and repost a review if it was simply bad luck.

Comments about Tascam DR-05 Solid State Recorder:
I purchased the DR-05 for field recoring and for recording audio for a video project. It's a good tool for recording ambiences and live performances "in the room." I would recommend a wind screen or "dead cat" attachment, however, because the mics pick up every little breeze that strikes them. There is an input for a "shotgun" or lavalier mic, making this suitable for recording interviews. Resolution of recording can be set as high as "24/96," if you wanna get "archival" about it. Overdubbing and reverb can be added, if you're using this for recording demos or making informal instrumental/vocal recordings. There's even an instrument tuner built-in. My sole complaint about the function or design is that the battery compartment slides open too easily; a bit of tape at the seam might be found necessary.

Instruction book print so small you can barely read it, even with a magnifier. Takes some time to learn to navigate. Not as easy to use as I had hoped. Was inexpensive, will get some value from it

Comments about Tascam DR-05 Solid State Recorder:
I use this to record samples of my singing along with back tracks through my Mackie Pro FX PA system. As long as you control the output volume and watch the input meter on the DR-05 device, there is no distortion. I would buy this again.

Comments about Tascam DR-05 Solid State Recorder:
This is the second small digital recorder I've owned (the first was an American Audio). The quality and features of the DR-05 beat my old one by a mile. With the automatic level controls, and the variable sampling rates, all combined with its easy operation, this recorder is extremely easy to use to capture perfect recordings. Need I say more? The recording sound quality is outstanding and amazing - especially so in light of its low price. I can't say enough good about it at this point. Oh yeah, the user's manual is easy to understand and use as well. I'd definitely buy another one, and heartily recommend it to anyone needing an inexpensive, portable, digital recorder.

Comments about Tascam DR-05 Solid State Recorder:
I am a Semi-Professional Musician and have been playing music for over 50 years. I wanted a Small & Compact Digital 2 channel "Stereo" Recorder to record music from utube and other sources that I wanted to learn how to play & sing. At first I was looking at the Tascam DP-006 Portastudio Multitrack Recorder because I did'nt notice the DR-05 listing. The DP-006 was more than I really needed for my purpose. I already have a 4 track Cassette Recorder and 8 track Digital Recorder. Not seing the DR-05 Listing, I was about ready to order the DP-006 anyway when I happend to notice the DR-05 listing. This was "exactly" what I wanted. It took me a while to figure out how to use it like all new electronic devices. I am older, so I don't "catch on" as fast as a younger person would. I grew up with "tape based" Recorders. First, "real to real" then "8 Track Cartage" and finally "4 Channel Cassette" recorders. I love the features on the DR-05. First of all I want to say it does a Excellant job of Recording. It is easy to "set up" once I read to manual and knew how to do it. It has several Repeat Functions. Playback Speed Functions. You can create New Folders, Playlists, Title your songs "when connect to a computer". It has Several Formats for Recording, from mp3 to wav@ differant bit rates. This DR-05 has a lot of the same functions as a "MultiTrack" Recorder. The only two Negitive things that I would say about the DR-05 are that the Batteries don't last as long as they are Advertised, and the "built in speaker" doesn't have much volume or quality to the sound. Considering how Small & Compact it is, that is Not a Problrm for Me. I use "usb buss power" from my computer whenever I am recording from utube and when I playback I use headphones or another Amplified Source such as "surround sound" or a "small stereo amplifier" I also have a usb power supply charger that I connect when playing music back. This is a "Great Recorder" & it has Lot's of Features. "Buy It"
