Capture song ideas before they float away, or get all the important meeting notes recorded as well.

TASCAM’s DR-07mkII improves on one of their best-selling portable recorders ever with adjustable microphones, clear sound quality, and a great new design. The stereo recorder features a pair of adjustable condenser microphones. The built-in cardioid pattern mics can be moved from an XY position, for tight imaging, to an AB position, for a wider ambient sound. You choose the best sound depending on the source and environment.

Superior Sound Quality
The sound of the DR-07mkII reflects over 30 years of TASCAM’s recording experience. A separate power supply for the codec enables the full capabilities of the A/D and D/A converter, and separate analog & digital circuit boards and low impedance circuit design reduce noise in the design. The DR-07mkII records to microSD or microSDHC media, recording in MP3 or WAV (BWF) file format at up to 96kHz/24-bit resolution.

The 1/8" mic/line input allows you to plug in your own microphones and can supply plug-in power for mics that need it. The Level Align function prevents uneven volume levels during playback through the 1/8” headphone output or built-in speaker. Variable-Speed Audition–which changes playback speed without affecting pitch–and looping are also available during playback for transcription or learning new music. 17.5 hours of longer battery life at 44.1kHz/16-bit, WAV (BWF) is long enough for any recording situation.

Advanced Recording Features

Sharing some features with the new DR-05, the DR-07mkII makes recording simple enough for any musician. The Peak reduction function sets the optimum recording level even in recording to avoid the over level. Quick Menu selects commonly used parameters in playback or record like auto level setting or limiting, while deeper settings are available through a full-featured setup menu.

Some DR-07mkII features that aren’t found on the DR-05 include Overdub mode, which records over your previous take but keeps a copy of the original. The portable recorder also includes Auto Record and Auto Mark settings for hands-off operation. A reverb effect is also provided to give your recordings that mastered polish.

I have really put this unit thru the mill. The on-board mics are more than good. Beware that if you are recording live music you may want to use the menu and find the minus Bass EQ. I've found this feature to be handy when using the mics and also receiving signals from an external mixing board. Unless you are in a recording studio, the on-board mics seem to pick up a "boominess" from room acoustics. I found my greatest success with a headphone jack out from my mixing board connected to the line-in jack of the MKII. The fact that Tascam publishes their owner's manual online for free played a huge part in my decision to purchase. This unit is very user friendly. Don't be afraid of 100 and some pages of instructions. You can record right out of the box with the "quick start" feature in the first few pages. I have laid down several tracks including drum, lead guitar, vocals and acoustic guitar using a Jam Man looper and running it through my board. The output of the MKII is clean and every nuance is captured. The big surprise came when coupling the MKII to my computer. Three key strokes and you are transporting music from the MKII to the computer music file where it can be burned to a CD with a couple more strokes. One slick feature is that when you name your tracks, the track names automatically appear on the MKII as well as the computer. I feel that Tascam has really taken a user-friendly concept to the max with this unit and with MF's 45 day trial, you'll learn to love this thing.Buy the MKII. You won't be disappointed.
The size and the menu possibilities make this unit easy to navigate through any recording options that you may find necessary for a quality outcome. The on-board mics are very handy but the built-in speaker only tells you that you have recorded something. It's not very loud. If you want to hear it after years of ringing music in your ears, you should attach MKII to a live monitor system.
Let's face it ..every thing that is not the space shuttle is made of plastic . The MKII seems to be well constructed, and the input's and push keys are well built.
I have owned other brands (zoom, Galaxy) the MKII blows them away, what you get for what you pay is well worth the money. Don't tell TASCAM or MF, they could get more!

Purchased 7 months ago, this no longer works. I babied it, rarely even took it outside, kept it protected during and after recordings - which were pretty good considering the cheap construction and handling noise - but it will no longer power on. 2 stars because I did get a few good recordings out of it but will now have to reach out to Tascam about a replacement even though I no longer have the original box/manual/etc. If I could choose again I'd spend a bit more for something with a better build quality that might last longer than 7 months.

Comments about TASCAM DR-07mkII Handheld Digital Recorder:

I bought mine last year and it is my faithful companion. I have a home studio, however I do not always want to go down there to record a sudden inspiration (too many things to turn on). So, I grab this little thing and record the acoustic guitar track. Then I check it out using headphones and if I like it I transfer it to the computer and email it to work so I can listen to it several times in order to start evaluating how to finish the song.

I also use it to record the final mix directly from my console (it saves disc space in my console) and then I use Audacity to give it the finishing touches.

Definitely worth having one if you are like me who gets inspirations without warning.

I use this recorder to record interviews with bands in my local area. The sound quality is great in XY and AB positions. The Line in feature for a mic gives this unit an awesome capability to hook up lapel mics to it. I use this in conjunction with a portable camcorder mixer, a couple of spliters, and up to 8 condenser lapel mics. Great audio quality for the money. I don's see the need to jump up to a more expensive model, as this thing has all the features I need.

Comments about TASCAM DR-07mkII Handheld Digital Recorder:

I bought this for several reasons. I play-sing-lead a contemporary church band. I was interested in recording some of our performances and home recording. I found that right out of the box, it is really great for point and record performances both at home and at church. Quality is excellent to my ears., easy to dump into the computer, burn and make CDs to listen to while driving! Easy, done. It also has many other features which I was hoping to use, like plugging in 2 microphones to record a guitar and voice, like plugging it into a simple mixer, like laying down tracks. All of these things it can do. However, read the other reviews and you will see a pattern of difficulty with these features. Tell the manufacturer to create a better manual with multiple recording scenarios!

Comments about TASCAM DR-07mkII Handheld Digital Recorder:

I bought this unit at the last minute to record a live performance in Brisbane, Australia. As it turned out, recording was not allowed during the performance, but I tested it out by recording some blues mp3s on my laptop through some mediocre speakers. The results were astonishing ... extremely clear and undistorted sound. Much better than I expected with a compact unit, and virtually equal to the CDs the mp3s were made from. The variable speed playback feature allows one to record and play back at down to 1/2 speed at the same pitch, making it a good tool for learning fast licks on recorded tracks. Altogether, this is a nice compact unit that provides high quality (practically studio-quality) results with little or no extraneous noise.

While I put down 'none' in the CONS section, I felt that the massive operating manual could have provided some suggested settings for various types of recording conditions.

Comments about TASCAM DR-07mkII Handheld Digital Recorder:

This recorder essentially serves the purpose that I wanted to use it for,-- home band recordings. The sound is good for that But I tried to use it to record a perfomance outside and it picked up a lot of ambient noise, and the quality and volume of the sound was really affected by the wind. There are probably some fixes or help for these issues, but I was dissappointed in the outside recording I tried to make. Also, trying to do any type of an overdub has been impossible. Can not get any type of balance in the volume of each track. I realize that you can't expect to get anything near studio type quality in either such situations, but I just thought it would do better than it did in these latter two areas. Finally, it needs a better user's manual

I bought the DR-07mkII to record our doowop group rehearsals and send mp3's to the rest of the guys so we could remember the ideas rehearsed. I was stunned by the quality of the sound, and have since used it to record live performances of solos as well as the groups that I sing in. It is very easy and intuitive to use, has a large legible screen, and interfacing to the computer for downloading and post production, as well as connecting to my audio system for playback are a snap. Excellent battery life. The recorder, small table-top tri-pod (recommended), and extra AA batteries take up a very small space in a small ditty bag. I've been using it for four months now with no problems whatsoever. Tascam knocked this one out of the park.
