I bought this about a year ago and it is still going strong. I have taken this to countless jam sessions, group rehersals, family reunions, road trips, solo jamming practice time and carry it around for just listening to tunes on the go. I have recorded from my Roland drum kit into the 1/4" input, very simple. Sounds AWESOME. I have used it to record a 5 piece band rehearsal out of a 12 channel Mackie mixer. Again, AWESOME. I have pirated concert tunage using a SM-57 (FE XLR to MALE 1/4" required). Built in condenser mic's are OK, work fine for spoken word situations but a C1000S is pure magic.(Again, adapter required, no XLR jack) I also use the line in & 1/8" jack for tranferring XM Radio recordings to MP3, WAV, or whatever. I even use this thing to tranfer vinyl to MP3! Display is clear & easy to read. Works great with vista, charges while USB is attatched and tranfer is a snap! The optional mic stand holder and AC cord is VERY handy! Since I got this, the other guys have all bought other brands of digital recorders from Sony to Samson but this one stands alone. It does what I need it to do. Would I buy it again? Oh Yea!

At first I was pretty impressed by the DR-1, but after a bit longer I had many disappointments. Yes it has a metronome, but there is no way to record over it. Yes you can overdub, but any parts you add are mixed down so they can't be imported to a real multi-tracking program. You can make little sketches with the overdubbing, but if you happen to record something really perfect it will be mixed so that you can't use it. Oh, and by the way, you can't overdub while you are recording from the line level input, so forget overdubbing with your ipod or pocket pod plugged in. And you can't plug a guitar or bass into the DR-1. All in all, I think that the Samson H4 seems not to have any of these problems at the same price.

    Awesome recorder!!

Comments about TASCAM DR-1 Portable Digital Recorder:

I've been in bands for over 20 years, and recording reherals/ideas has always been a pain. Dealing with tapes that are easily damaged and poor sound quality. Most of the digital recorders until now where bulky and required time to setup. The DR-1 is one of the best purchases that I've ever made... No kidding! This thing is so easy to use, and takes no time to setup. Pretty much set up your preferences, and hit the record button. I record the band rehearsals, and keep it near by at home in case I come up with a good idea for a song. I even bring it to work, and hum ideas into it... Great sound quality as well. Awesome device for the money. Let me tell you, I have used the hell out of this thing, and have had pretty much no issues with it. The only thing that's broken on it is the little latch on the side where you store the memory and hook up the USB. No big deal though. I've had this thing for over three years, and would buy another if something happened to it.

    HOLY FANTASMICALLY quality craftsmenship.

Comments about TASCAM DR-1 Portable Digital Recorder:

This might possibly be the greatest item in world history, or atleast in portable recording. The internal mics boast serious top notch stereo sound which is as high of quality as our ears. The overdub feature is pretty sweet and way entertaining to play around with. It is perfect for recording samples for industrial or experimental music. The exporting from the recorder to a computer via USB is quick and simple, and the .wav or .mp3 files turn out great. It also is a perfect little box to record any ideas or rehearsals, or even complete songs. The reverb fx is pretty slick, but i have a computer, recording studio, and mixer that can do the same thing, so it doesn't really impress me. The only minor flaws are a lack of certain options (that are minor enough that i can't remember them) as well as the inability to name the files on the recorder (unless I just don't know how to). Besides that, this little item is absolutely perfect. It is built solid and works smoothly, and I've had it half a year and it still works flawlessly. No matter what you do, even if you don't even want a portable recorder, you should still buy this, that's how well it works.

Good device - But has a flaw

    By Rob-v6qT-

Comments about TASCAM DR-1 Portable Digital Recorder:

I've been using this handy little recorder for the past few months and the overdub feature iswhat makes it something special (comapred to other handheld digital recorders). I think the only flaw with this device is that you can't track to the metronome/click in order to achieve a solid basic track. What's the point of the metronome feature - if you can't use it to record your track in perfect time?

    Excellent introduction to recording.

Comments about TASCAM DR-1 Portable Digital Recorder:

This is the first home recorder I've ever purchased. I bought it a week ago and, even though I have not yet explored the effects or overdub functions, it is already indispensable. Within an hour of opening the box I had recorded two short songs in mp3 format, uploaded them to my laptop, and was listening to them on my iPod. Ridiculous how easy it was. The battery lasts a LONG time, so don't worry about the lack of a power source. The speaker is VERY sensitive, so you might want to consider the optional stand. An excellent product overall.

Comments about TASCAM DR-1 Portable Digital Recorder:

I bought this recorder a few weeks ago to help me remember parts I write on the fly. The sound quality has proved to be much clearer and better than I anticipated, and the loop function and playback features were very easy to use. I suggest buying the accessory pack, or else you will have a lot of trouble in finding a good spot to place the Recorder. Overall a pretty good deal.

Comments about TASCAM DR-1 Portable Digital Recorder:

I decided to write this review because one of the other reviews said you cannot plug any instrument into this recorder. They are completely wrong. Do not listen to that not only did I connect my acoustic guitar for near perfect recording, but I plugged my electric guitar into the mic 2 input using my pod xt and got incredibly clear recording. And the built in effects sound great with your voice or acoustic guitar. Don't forget about the overdub feature. That's so cool. When you overdub it saves the original and just makes a new track allowing you to erase any mistakes and start over in seconds. There is no other recorder out there with these features for the money. Buy it and you will not be disappointed.

    AMAZING

Comments about TASCAM DR-1 Portable Digital Recorder:

This thing is AMAZING. The build quality is a little on the cheapie side - all plastic and easy to break I imagine. But right out of the box, (after charging the battery) I turned it on, adjusted the input levels, and recorded my playing the acoustic guitar. Then I plugged it into my Bose stereo, just like I plug my iPod in and BANG. The sound is warm and deep. I'm very impressed. I would shop around because I think you can get it a little cheaper, but I have no regrets. I will get a lot of use out of this for when I need to quickly record an idea without the hassle of going to my more sophisticated equipment. Thumbs up on this one.
