I received the DR-07 in the mail a few days ago and my first unboxing thought was, hmmm this looks pretty simple and cheap. I threw in batteries, immediately figured out how to record, set a mic level.. and recorded a few minutes of piano in my living room. I was a bit floored when i heard the result on playback. Great sounding recording right out of the box in 10 minutes. My only complaint on the initial recording is that I had the central air on and it came through on the recording. The user interface is a dream. If you have ever used any kind of computer or small gadget then you can have the features figured out in 30 minutes flat.Since then I have recorded outdoors ambiance with beautiful results. I've also recorded a musician with bass guitar and him singing along, it came out fantastically. The only thing i have not tested this device on is a full sound, such as a concert or rock band rehearsal environment. Hopefully I can edit this review in a few days and reveal the outcome.I have 4 major gripes with this gadget.1. No ac power source included.2. No bag or case to keep it protected. It is my opinion that the DR-07 will break from a 4 foot fall on a hard surface. At least a strap or handle of some kind would be helpful.3. DO NOT handle the device while recording. Handling noise is outrageous. This machine was made to be put on a tripod, hit record and leave it alone.(there is a delay record feature so the record button "push" doesn't show up in the recording)which leads me to:4. There is a camera tripod mount on the bottom of the device, however as I'm a musician, I wish there was an included adapter to mount this onto a boom microphone stand. This is a petty gripe, so I left it for the end. In my opinion.. this device would excel at band rehearsal recording scenarios on a microphone boom stand for surgical placement.

My 1st purchase of this product had to be returned because it stopped working within about 10 days. I purchased a replacement and had it for a bit over 90 days and it stopped working also. The Warranty for labor ends after 90 days thru the manufacturer and I had this for about 100 days so no luck. I called Tascam and was advised it would be $45.00 to repair that was about 1/2 of what I paid for it. I would stay aware from this product..

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

It started out great, then came the dreaded error: invalid card. The same card that came with it and recorded yesterday. Let it set on table while preparing to send it back. 2 days later, worked. Important show that night, recorder in place, "Invald Card". Missed the whole production. Buy a better one, you get what you pay for with this one.

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

This is a great recorder to have. I use to record whenI play guitar so if I play something thats cool I caught it on the recorder. I used this to record songs for my buddy's band so they can make a demo cd to take to bars to get gigs. Thye were impressed with the sound and quality and told me it sounded like they recorded in a studio when we recorded it in a garage.

It's also great to record voice. I use it to record my Grandfather's voice to have him tell stories back in the days to where I can make a CD of them.

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

I was very disappointed when I put two new Energizer batteries, and attempted to record. The recording was so faint, there was no point in even keeping it.I then read the manual, and it suggests setting the GAIN to high if recording isn't loud enough. This is unacceptable for a 200-dollar piece of gear. If I can't get a loud recording out of this I am sending it back not only due to the recording quality, but, it's very flimsy: doesn't power on, Record light is a solid on, and LED display varies each time I do a battery removal to power off. Don't but it.

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

Received my delivered yesterday and man, was I blown away. After about 5 min of thumbing through the menus, I felt comfortable enough to start recording. First, I put it up to my guitar amp, checked the levels and went to town. Then I decided to try the drums. Placed it about 15 ft away and started jammin. When I was done, I hooked up to the laptop and took a listen. I was amazed at the quality recording it made without changing a single setting. Right out of the box this thing sounded sweet! I can't wait to tweek it and make it even better. This thing is perfect for recording jam sessions and practices. I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

I see that users are having a problem with battery usage. Go to Wally world and pick up a powerline universal AC adapter. 3-12 volts DC 600MA. Set it to 4.5 volts. Make sure the tip ( it's the larger of the yellow ones) is set to +. Works great. Adios Batteries.

Try an outboard mic

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

This is my first field recorder so I don't know how to compare it to other brands or models but I do know computer recording and have a good ear for recognizing a quality track. This hand held wonder is definitely worthy of accomplishing the job. The only thing that holds it back is the built in mics. I could not achieve a 'music' quality recording from them despite the unit's seeming ability to faithfully record whatever it's presented. Tests with various condenser mics yielded such amazingly better results that I won't use the built-ins again for anything important. But who wants to lug around a phantom power supply right? That kinda defeats the portability factor. So I went on a hunt for a cheap battery powered condenser and found a good one in the MXL V63MBP ($99.99). You'll have to find this mic's sweet spot for your application but when placed properly the resulting tracks are worlds beyond what should be possible with no wires or electricity. Really people, outboard mics takes the DR-07 from being a clever toy to a truly useful tool.

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

The band has been using this for the past two months to record practice since we seem to always forget the cool jams we make up. It works REALLY well for that purpose, we just leave it in the corner of the room, level it up and hit record. Usually we do a "test" recording to make sure that the mix is right. We bass/e it off the drums (full kit with LOUD cymbals) since you cant turn that up or down.I have had this thing right in the middle of a jams session too (4 feet from the drum set), it muds it up but its listenable, great for going back and trying to figure out what on earth you play. As far as getting a good quality recording out of it, im sure it can do it. the sound quality is very good at about 20 feet from the drum set. We have not used an external mic, so im sure that will also make it better.Good product, recommend to anyone.

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

I just received my DR-07 2 hours before band practice. It only took me a few minutes with the well written manual to start recording, and I just couldn't be happier with the results. Using the factory settings in mp3 128 kbps mode, and the limiter on, I recorded the rehearsal with no problems. The sound is incredible. All of the instruments and vocals recorded beautifully. I expected my bass to be thin, but the DR07 reproduced the sound as if I was sitting in front of my amp! I'm sure there are better recorders out there, but for the price, this does everything I need it to. I also bought the PS-P520 adapter, which is high quality and well worth the price.

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

This unit is easy to use and sounds really good.I really dont need alot of features that take up my time trying to figure out how to use. The manual is written sensibly and the menu's are simple to access. The day I recieved this I recorded our duo's rehearsal (Piano with electric, Acoustic and Papoose guitars)Save for the elecric guitar vocals and everything else goes through a Roland 550 Keyboard amp at practice. Also I did some live acoustic guitar and vocals un-miked, this unit sounds so good! I recommend it highly, especially if your an old school guy used to knobs and buttons. Mounts on a camera tripod. Wont break the bank or your spirit.

Great little recorder

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

I got one of these primarily to record practice sessions for self critique. It works great for this purpose. The built-in mikes do a good job and pick up my classical guitar well without having to get all fiddly in how you set things up. I like the fact that you can hit the record button once and it's in standby mode where you can adjust the record level, then hit the record button again to start your recording. You may not want to use this to record for making commercial CDs, but it certainly is up to the task of making say demos or tracks to send to friends/relatives. Perhaps even good enough for a student to include with an application to college/conservatory.Recording my electric guitar via my multi-effects pedal into the line-in jack seems a bit thin, but I have only tried this once or twice and it may be that I need to tweak things a bit more. However, so recording is certainly up to the intended use of self critique. I might also experiment using the mikes and one of my amps. The one feature lacking that I think might be useful is separate inputs for left and right channels. You couldn't easily set up with say input from a guitar P/U on one channel and a vocal mike on the other, although I imagine one could buy or make some sort of Y-cable or adaptor to allow this. It's small enough to be easy to carry. It will fit in pants pockets. If your interested in producing professional level recordings, this might not be the thing for you. If you're interested in recording practice sessions, jam sessions, getting down musical ideas as they come to you, etc., this works well.

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

I originally bought this recorder to record my band but have started to use is as a true field recorder for my documentary and short films. Even with a cheap Nady shotgun mic this Tascam improves the sound quality over the onboard camcorder mic so much there isn't any comparison. Film makers need stand alone sound to download into the editing software and this DR-07 unit took our production LLC into a completely professional level.

Comments about TASCAM DR07 Handheld Digital Recorder:

I bought the DR-07 on advice of my sound guy at our local music store, and he was right on. Find the sweet spot in the room where you can hear everything and turn it on. It picks up EVERYTHING with perfect clarity. Even the backup girls chatting in the background during a song. I've got the mic stand adapter, so the unit attaches directly to a stand for easy room placement. I use MP-3 mode to record the entire 2 hour practice, then send the practice home with the guys on a thumb drive. Or, record the practice/gig in WAV mode and cut out the BS between songs. I'd buy the AC adapter though. The AA batteries seem to last quite a while, but with the adapter I just "set it, and forget it". I recommend you buy one. Yesterday!
