A great choice for small studios, it has four microphone inputs—two with analog insert jacks—have phantom power for professional condenser microphones. The control surface has nine 60mm touch-sensitive moving faders for silky-smooth control over channel level, pan or aux settings. I ordered this to upgrade from my Lexicon Omega (which is an awesome unit for the money) primarily for the control surface features and additional inputs. The unit is very well made, nice, heavy, sturdy and larger than I expected...I was pleasantly surprised.Since I had never used firewire, I also had to install a firewire card into my computer. I didn't need to install Cubes LE since I was already using it. I connected things up and after about 30 minutes of making some setting changes I was able to get it to work...somewhat.I then did more reading on configuring the MIDI control functions, was excited to see how easy it was to program custom functionality for the F-keys, and within about an hour I was recording, mixing, and having a blast watching the sliders magically move when I used my mouse on the computer screen, and vice versa. Then I ran into a few problems. For some reason I couldn't get sound to play through it, even though it had been working fine a few minutes earlier. I check all connections, etc. I also started having problems with my firewire connection and Cubase was losing my configuration settings. After several reboots and 4 hours of frustration, I found the problem and learned the following things (hints to potential and new users):1. Sometimes when the unit is turned on it doesn't make a firewire connection. I turn it off and back on and the 2nd time seems to work.2. If you do not have a firewire connection and then start Cubase, Cubase will not find the unit and default to different configuration settings.3. If Cubase has some invalid or faulty VST Plugins, it may freeze when you try to load it, forcing you to reboot your PC and start the whole nasty cycle over again.4. My problem with the sound not working was a simple "Duh!" moment. Because the 1082 has the ability to switch between "Computer" mode, "Monitor/Mix" mode and MIDI mode, if you go to Monitor/Mix mode and select to only monitor your inputs, then click back to computer mode (the normal mode for tracking and mixing), you will NOT see that you have selected to only hear inputs, and may not understand this. Now that I do understand, all is good and this unit ROCKS!

This item never worked out of the box. I could do basic recording and playback, but the control surface never worked. The motorized faders would go berserk, vibrating back and forth. The buttons to change sample rate, the transport buttons, the EQ, and, in fact most of the buttons never did anything at all.As usual, tech support (if you could actually get through) said, "Oh you have to update the driver," even though it was obvious that there was more wrong here than any driver that would be released to the public could have. So they emailed drivers, but not the ones they said they would. Hours more on the phone, over several days. Finally got the new drivers, but they made no difference. Too late to return to Musician's Friend. Now Tascam tech support essentially disappeared. They had a rude recorded message, something like "We're busy, call back," and then hung up. No chance to leave a message. Or I'd be on hold for 2 hours, THEN it'd hang up. For 2 months, I couldn't get through. I stuck the thing in my attic, and went back to my old interface.Recently, I got two new computers, a Mac and a PC, and decided to try again. I got all the latest drivers, installed them, no difference, either machine. On my third try to tech support, I got through. At least this rep had a brain. He fairly quickly diagnosed, "Your 1082 is defective." Yeah, I knew that since I bought it. Out of warranty, they wouldn't do anything. Repair costs approach cost of a new one. I bought an Alesis MasterControl, and I LOVE it. Everything works!DON'T BUY TASCAM PRODUCTS!!!

    No Windows7 drivers...

Comments about TASCAM FW-1082 10-Channel FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

This was a cool interface and daw controller. I was using it with Vista 32 and had no problems with it. Unfortunately, my pc died and I'm looking at a new laptop with Windows 7 64. Tascam is claiming that no Windows 7 drivers will be created. Sad.

    Good for light use

Comments about TASCAM FW-1082 10-Channel FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

I've used the TASCAM 1082 for four years. It's a professional studio, so the mixer has been used almost daily. The software setup to Cubase SX was not a simple plug n' play, but stable once all the parameters were set correctly. As I recall, it took me four hours. If you're a heavy user, you can buy more reliable hardware. Two motorized faders on the 1082 "lost traction" and had to be replaced. The power supply failed as well. With lighter "weekend warrior" type of use, this unit would perform well. The quality of the input/output has been excellent.

    A good little machine

    By T.M.M.-rkzWV

Comments about TASCAM FW-1082 10-Channel FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

I'm going to be completely honest. This isn't a Digi oo3, so don't expect it to be. But on its own, its not a bad interface, it sounds pretty darn good. The preamps are surprisingly impressive. The faders are a little loose, but beat knobs any day. Set up is relatively simple. I'm using this for demo's, and its a major upgrade over my previous interface, the fast track ultra. Basically all I need now is a great A/D converter and I'll have an amazing quality recording. I think my favorite thing about this is the job wheel and playback/record buttons. Its such a time saver. My only complaint is that there are only 4 XLR In's. Kind of a bummer. But for the price, I don't think you can beat this machine.

not completely universal but an excellent value

Comments about TASCAM FW-1082 10-Channel FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

First of this is a pretty big piece of hardware.2 excellnt quality no noise. Works quite well with Sonar. Even in its mackie emulation mode I have not gotten it too work with Acid or Vegas. That was not an issue I thought that might be the case when I got the pannel. It works nearly flawlessly with Sonar. Setting it up with Sonar is a no brainer. For the money it seems to be a very good value. I would highly recomend it for use with Sonar. Be aware when you think of this product you understand what it is actually doing. It is using midi to control a motorized mixer. It then writes your touch control mixer motions to your audio envelopes in Sonar. You then rerender the project. It saves a lot of accidental mouse messes that are possible in a big complex video project. I am not sure why these devices are not more standardized and broadly compatible. They are a bit pricey. Beyond a 20 minute Video project they begin to be real handy. It also seems to crash on occaision ,but at an acceptable level and I relly don't know fully how to use it yet. Written manual with it is basicly worthless , but with Sonar you do not need it.

    Good For Beginners

Comments about TASCAM FW-1082 10-Channel FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

It is a Lovely Product for someone who puts his feet in this field of recording. I feel that for such low price it is absolute value for money. The recording quality is excellent, Given no problems till now, Firewire is the best way to go in recording. It gives excellent control to the engineer. However it lacks the qualities that we need as a Pro Engineer like 5.1 surround monitoring, Has only 4 mic ins, no talkback support, no expansion scope, no LCD, no headphone routing functions. How can you expect all this for such a low price though. It's definitely a excellent deal if one is tight on budget. no regrets but as u grow you'll want to upgrade. so either save more and buy something like 1884 later or work with this for a while and when u understand all the needs and issues of recording aim for the Pro ones. The latter is a better thing to do. Tascam products are really worth buying. once you buy it, don't expect everything to run smoothly. you'll have to give time to understand intricacies of recording and using the interface. but soon everything will be crystal clear. Keep the Patience and Good Luck !

    Exellent and reliable

Comments about TASCAM FW-1082 10-Channel FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

Great Great Gear! For those who are just no into pro-tools. I used with Adobe Audition latest edition and it synchronized great through the "mackie control" or "midi" options in the software. Automotive-faders are lovely. I have record above 48bit all my sessions and still accurate response and real time effects with almost 0 noise. I had M-Audio similar interface before and the only difference is the LCD panel which I don't use much because I tend to look to the computer all the time. Better buy this one if you are tied in budget. I love my tascam FW 1082.

    Great Product for Price

Comments about TASCAM FW-1082 10-Channel FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface:

The Tascam 1082 is a great controller for the price. The control options in a DAW are great. I use it for SONAR 6, and it does everything I need it to do. The only issue with the device is that setting it up takes a little time and be careful during this process. If you set it up wrong to begin with, it is easy to redo, but can be very frustrating if you do not know how to do it. Also, customer support for Tascam is AWFUL!!! You will learn much more about the product and how to trouble shoot by going to the Tascam or your DAW's forums and researching. I hope you enjoy it because I certainly have.
