Old School Look in a New School Environment

Comments about TASCAM M-164UF 16-Input Mixer with Effects and USB 2.0 Interface:

I recently upgraded from an M-Audio Fast Track Pro. Glad I did! I'll just cut to the chase: first impression was "wow, I've never heard digital audio sound so good! Seriously. Even just listening to songs from iTunes I was blown away by the clarity, as well as Netflix streams. So as a "sound card", fantastic I think. I run Windows XP and use Adobe Audition to record. No issues setting up and installing drivers. Worked fine with audio software. One thing I liked is the head room on each input. Where on the M-Audio box I felt it lacked the Tascam has room to spare as far as input gain. Having Aux and Sub mix options is great. Have not used internal effects, wouldn't expect much from them, only use outboard or software effects but are there if you need them. Hard plastic construction prob not road ready but for a desktop solution, sturdy enough and in a pinch could def help in a live setting. All the inputs are in the back and a bit crammed in there, but there is plenty there to connect everything you'd need to. Nice to have EQ Lo/Mid/Hi on first 6 channels, although not the greatest. Has phantom power for condensor mics. I have to admit I didn't care much for the M-Audio box's sound especially with vocal mics. This seems a little purer but still a little tinny with vox mic run through a tube pre. All in all though a pretty powerful desktop USB mixer. I also think it's pretty sexy, the LED input level above each channel reminds me of the big boards I used in audio school. I really don't have anything bad to say about it. I used it to record my band, ran 6 mics through it for drums, each to seperate track, came out good. If you have any drop-out problems just upping the latency buffer setting should take care of it. If you're like me and enjoy signal routing options, prob the best thing in it's price range for that. I'm happy, just feels alot better than a box on a desk, like I'm really recording and mixing. Tascam has come a long way since 4 track cassette recorders!

Comments about TASCAM M-164UF 16-Input Mixer with Effects and USB 2.0 Interface:

Since this is a first review, I'll be as comprehensive as possible. The mixer, as a mixer, is good, i guess. silent, flexible, it's nice. But whatever. I forked out the cash to do multitrack recording.Well, getting this thing to do what I wanted was such a pain, but it was worth it. Being the first multitrack setup I have used, I went in unarmed. First off, cubase doesn't function with 64-bit Vista. After installing, it fails to launch. Not too much of a problem fir me because I managed to get it to work with Sonar Cakewalk 4 (old, i know). But the trick to that was realising that ASIO drivers were actually better than WDK/MS drivers for the mixer. Everywhere the two are compared, the opposite is stated. It's not as though the mixer doesn't support WDK/MS, in fact it is the default driver and works flawlessly up to 6 channels. Anymore, however, and theres dropouts galore. Setting to ASIO solves dropout problems and I recorded 15 minutes straight of 12 tracks no issues. Noted, I had a profile in vista built for speed on an already fast, 2 month old computer, so this was expected. Before I figured out the asio trick, I emailed tascam. 6 weeks later, I still haven't gotten a response. Maybe their call line is better?(couldn't be worse) Luckily I didn't *need* them. Other things worth mentioning: the mixer has problems with some windows programs if you use it as the sound output. Not a big deal, but annoying. The effects aren't recordable to my knowledge. I wouldn't use them anywho, but some might. Everything's plastic. I don't care, but again, some might. When recording, there's a send for every channel up to 12. After that, you have have to configure the on-mixer sends to separate the other 4 if you wish to do a total of 13 or more. Hard to set up, harder to explain (but doable).End of story- NOT recommended if your bad with computers and don't have cakewalk. Recommended if your a computer guru or have a mac (lent it to a friend whos a mac user- no problems)

Comments about TASCAM M-164UF 16-Input Mixer with Effects and USB 2.0 Interface:

Well to be perfectly honest its not the greatest mixer on the market but does exactly what I need it for. The 16 channels in are not all for mics is the greatest downfall. Channels 1-6 are grouped in two which can be operated side by side, so in reality just six channels though twelve mics go in simultaneously, (unless you use multiple mixers and connect the other channels with rca jacks). But all in all, the software runs smoothly and the manual said it wouldn't with my version of windows. It works well with adobe audition 3.0 no latency or configurations problems at all. Buy it if you hate fire wire and texas instruments components with PC's, because this mixer will stay with any at home recording enthusiast who just wants to lay down the trax.PeaceE
