OVERVIEW

6-in/2-out USB audio interface, part of the US-Series.

The Tascam US-1200 is a 6-in/2-out high-resolution audio interface with four high-quality HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) microphone preamplifiers, ideal for home and project studio recording. The team at Tascam spent long, demanding hours developing the highly regarded HDDA mic preamps, carefully selecting just the right components to optimize sound quality and performance. In addition, the US-1200 also features low-latency monitoring, high-resolution 24-bit/96kHz audio, on-board DSP mixing, and on-board DSP effects making this an extremely versatile and great sounding tool for recording.

High-quality HDDA microphone preamplifiers
TASCAM spent months testing parts and circuitry to develop what are the now the highly regarded HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) mic-preamps. The four XLR inputs are balanced microphone pre-amplifier circuits comprised of carefully selected components optimizing sound quality. The US-1200 is an optimally designed tool to clearly translate expressive performances to the DAW of your choice.

6 Analog inputs for multi-channel recording
The US-1200 is loaded with four XLR connectors supplying +48V phantom power and two TRS balanced inputs. The balanced low-noise connections are ideal for line connection equipment e.g. keyboards, etc. In addition, INPUTs 5 & 6 also support high-impedance recording for guitar and bass. The wealth of inputs makes the unit ideal for band recording.

Low-latency monitoring for stress-free recording
Utilize the DSP Mixer for Low-latency monitoring. Control the monitor balance easily with the MON MIX knob.

Supports high-resolution recording up to 24-bit/96kHz
With increasing HDD capacity and ever-faster PCs, high-resolution formats are being used more frequently. Record at 96kHz/24-bit resolution and guarantee your music reaches its highest potential.

On-board DSP mixer with two operational modes
The built-in DSP mixer can be used for various purposes simply by switching modes.

Multi-track Mode
Multi-track mode facilitates music production. The input sound and monitor mix can be adjusted separately, fine-tuning the balance between recording and playback volumes optimally. Monaural monitoring is also a possibility within the mixer operation.

Stereo-mix Mode
Stereo-mix mode is convenient for internet streaming, live broadcasts or video editing.
It is possible to deliver not only input sound but also sound from the PC through the unit and back to the recording by mixing it inside the US-1200.

On-board DSP effects
The DSP effects consist of reverb, a compressor and EQ to aid in monitoring your sound.
(The effects cannot be used when recording at 88.2/96 kHz resolutions.)

Dynamics effects
The dynamics effects allow one system to be used at the same time. Compressor and 3-band equalizer functions are available. Utilization of these enhancing effects add to the uniqueness of your sound by boosting high ranges when youre using dynamic microphones, or reconfiguring the vocals level by applying a light compressor.

Send effect
Reverb is available for your send effects. When recording; dry vocals can sound impassionate but by applying light reverb, sing gracefully and in the end, achieve a better result.

Got it yesterday and opened it up, planning to return it. It couldnt possibly work at this price?
Well, was I pleasantly surprised.
The unit is incredibly light but well made of a metal casing. Knobs are all secure and have a good feel to them, not loose or tight.
I downloaded the drivers/software from Tascam (as per instructions. They warn not to plug in before drivers are installed)
Reboot my Macfbook Pro and plugged in the 1200. It was, instantly, recognized by my operating system and Reaper.
This unit is a very basic multi channel USB interface that really works. I had to open the mixer software (downloaded with drivers) And leave it open while using the 1200. Recorded several tracks with voice and guitar, Went back with 3rd track for harmonies and this worked flawlessly. NO LATENCY. NO CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS. I would have preferred the monitor button to actually control the volume of my recorded track but it adjusts the volume from the stereo output in the rear of the unit. Through the headphone jack you can only adjust the entire project volume. I was able to remedied this by using headphone amp through the rear stereo monitoring jacks. Not perfect but I was able to separate the recording sound a bit more.
I was very pleasantly surprised at the ease of use and the quality of recordings I've made so far. This unit exceeds the sound quality of my stand alone Zoom R-16 though it doesn't have the tight, clean, highs as the PRESONUS 44VSL. BUT this unit has none of the latency, configuration problems I experienced with the PRESONUS. It isn't stuffed with many extras, the interface is simple but it all works with minimal configuration and effort.

Comments about Tascam US-1200 USB Audio Interface:

I picked this up when it popped up on the stupid deal of the day expecting to have some issues with it. I was pleasantly surprised when I didn't.
I replaced an m-audio m-track with this because I needed more inputs and wanting something powered. This works perfectly. Mic preamps sound really good and everything just works. I had a little bit of trouble (because I didn't read the directions) getting the computer to recognize it. If you plug it in before installing the driver, Windows will install one, but it doesn't work, you have to uninstall it, then install the correct one from the website. I use this with Studio One with no issues at all.
The only issue I've come across is that every now and then if I leave it on overnight, I've noticed that audio will stop playing out of it. It's an easy fix if you just disable the device in windows and re-enable it comes right back. Not sure if this is the device or my computer, but it's pretty rare and easy to fix.

Overall it's a great device and at the SDD price it's a steal.

this unit is not 4 out, it is 2 out only, it has line out in the rear and headphones out in the front which have the same signal!

4 out means 4 individual outs not

Still a nice piece if you need 6 channels to record at the same time, and only do stereo mixing.

it can be used for performance too, if you don't need alot of inputs just a nice laptop with some power and some powered monitors

Compatible with Windows/Mac OS. Make sure you download the driver for your Tascam-1200 (free) directly from the Tascam website. Provides great sound quality, up to 96kHz (bit accurate & core). Low latency when in use (also depends on the specs of your computer for maximum performance). It also comes with its own mixer for additional EQ control.

very happy with this product. have been using it for over 1 year and always a pleasure to work with.
i typically use 3-4 inputs at a time to record guitar with a click track on one of the inputs.

Bought to use as an input to Logic Pro X. I wanted enough inputs to record drums with separate channels. With 4 mic preamps and two line-in channels and using an external mixer for 2 more mic preamps, I can record 6 mic channels simultaneously.

Very easy to install software on Mac (Yosemite) and start using right away with Logic Pro X.

This device is very easy to set up out of the box. Connected to my destop which is Windows 10 no problems. The sound is amazing. I went from an M-audio M-track which was noisy at best to this which sounds great. The Interface is pretty cool but be aware that the volume controls in the windows interface won't do anything if the volumes in the interface are down/off.

Comments about Tascam US-1200 USB Audio Interface:

This is not a toy, setup requires careful reading and it does work professionally. I use with a Macbook Pro for sound engineering. There are cheaper units if you don't need 6 simultaneous inputs, but the unit is engineered well. A bit bulky for desktop use, which is why they suggest rack mounting. Tuscan/TEAC global customer service: Uh oh - I've sent two e-mails and no response to technical questions. If they get back to me I will try to update this review.

I can record six tracks at a time (two tracks used for either guitar/ or line in) . Not bad for the price (musicians' Friend). Slight latency delay, but better than my Tascam US-600. which cost 3 times as much and allows for recording 4 live tracks at a time. That's also a good unit. The latency problem might be due to other factors, although there shouldn't be. I have 16 gigs of RAM on the computer. This new unit is built like a tank.

Great interface, for the price. Enough inputs to get the job done. The sound is great. Haven't had a single problem with it. Wondering if I buy another one, if it will daisy-chain together??

Got this as a Stupid Deal of the Day, love it so far! Easy to use, very low latency and everything I've recorded through it sounds incredible. Have plugged bass and guitar in directly through the 1/4" and miked up guitar amps and sung vocals through the XLR inputs, handles it all really well.
