OVERVIEW

The fast, flexible, and affordable center of your computer music setup.

The 16-channel TASCAM US-1641 MIDI-enabled interface is one of your best choices for getting audio into your computer properly. Equipped with USB 2.0 and enough I/O to record your entire band, the US-1641 audio interface is always ready when you lay down some tracks. Use it to capture live performances, like the fruit of your church choir's hard work. 16 inputs plus and 4 outputs offer enough channels to give every instrument and voice a chance to shine. TASCAM even includes Cubase LE Version 5 with the US-1641 for enough state-of-the art recording power to get the mix just right.

Small enough to fit in a single rack space, the TASCAM US-1641 interface is ideal for both studio and portable computer recording. Since the mic and line inputs are on the front panel, there's no need for crawling behind a rack to get going. The rear panel is armed with 4 balanced line inputs for interfacing with synths, effects, mic preamps, or anything with a line level out. With the TASCAM US-1641 you also get up to 96kHz/24-bit audio resolution without having to lower the input/output count. The US-1641 interface's zero-latency monitoring prevents distracting delays for your performers during recording.

Naturally, the TASCAM US-1641 is ASIO, GSIF2, and CoreAudio compatible for use with Logic Pro, Digital Performer, Cubase, SONAR, Nuendo, Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack, Vegas, Live, GigaStudio, and most other audio recording software.

I upgraded to the Tascam from an M-Audio FastTrack Pro. The main reason for the upgrade was that AvidForce no longer made drivers for Mac; it was completely unusable. Fortunately the Tascam works without any hitches on El Capitan!

Before I begin keep in mind I'm learning! Newbie commentary may be said, but I think what I have to say is useful nonetheless!

An obvious upgrade are the 8 XLR ins, four of which are Phantom Power compatible. This makes the interface extremely versatile for a home studio in the amount of instruments/voices you want to record; even an 8-peice drum set can be recorded individually.

Second, there was a huge improvement in the signal level coming from the mics compared to my previous interface. I get a much more satisfying input level with this interface.

HOWEVER, there is one warning I want to let El Capitan users know. If I leave my interface on, fully connected to my laptop and speakers, after too long of being idle, my computer completely bugs out and has to restart. Not to worry, there are zero lasting repercussions, my laptop is exactly the same, but it has to restart due to some bug. I've also never ran into this problem while actually using the interface and related software. Making this nothing more than a small annoyance.

I still couldn't take away a star because of this, as I feel it is about the El Capitan OS, not the Tascam interface itself. Absolutely amazing value in this interface, and I highly recommend it for any amateur or home studio.

Getting right to the point, my unit was defective right from the start. What do I mean by "defective"?...either the USB cord was defective or the unit itself was defective because the interface was showing up as not being connected by my computer. FYI...I had ALL the updated drivers and software loaded properly and all connections were in place. Fortunately this sites return policy allowed me to return the unit without hassles. I'd also like to mention that the Steinberg recording software is a nightmare to try and understand! Reading the user's manual is painful to say the least and the software itself is exceedingly complex...then again, I'm new to home recording using a computer based software. I researched an audio interface, I saw many mixed reviews for the Tascam 1641. It seems this unit either works or it doesn't and from the other reviews it sounds as if Tascam's customer service leaves a lot to be desired...I'd advise anyone considering this unit to choose carefully. By the way, I bought the M-Audio Fasttrack Ultra 8 along with Sonar 7 recording software as a replacement. I'm still getting things set up but so far so good. I'll write a review on those items at a later date. I'm just starting out setting up a home studio, so I hope my input helps anyone who is doing the same...Todd in Michigan.

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

I have owned a Tascam US-1641 for about 2 years now and it is absolutely amazing for the home studio. I have recorded a few full albums with it so far and it has been great. I have recorded up to 12 tracks at a time with Zero latency & a very clear sound. Comparable to the Firepod & a great substitution if you don't have firewire!

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

This would have been an awesome set-up for me if the unit didn't malfunction. Worked good for about 6 or 8 months, then I started noticing a 20-30% load on my CPU with nothing running. It got much worse when I tried to mix in a DAW. While it still worked for tracking, I could not mix with it because the CPU load was too great. Turned out to be a defective unit. Thanks to MF for their extended warranty. Too bad about the unit. It had some decent pres and good features for the money. I decided not to get another one as Tascam products are iffy.

I actually got the tascam us-1800. exact same thing, just supports windows 7 and comes with cubase le 5 instead of le 4. and it has a small external power brick instead of it being in the unit itself. best mixer ive owned so far. so much versatility. great quality sound. works great with cubase le 5. ive had no latency problems with it going through usb. i think the best feature is that you can play back the recording through the mixer. i only have one set of good speakers and it was a pain switching between the computer and my old mixer to listen. overall GREAT MIXER. i would recommend to ANYONE. if your looking for excellent sound quality on a cheap budget. this is the mixer to get. for sure!

A Great Band for the Buck

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

You're definitely not going to find another interface with as many decent channels as this for the price. I've used this interface for multiple independent music recordings. The clarity is good and it's pretty sturdy, even despite the plastic knobs. The Bad:You're probably going to want to immediately throw away the driver disc and download the appropriate ones from Tascam's website. Also the phantom power is a continual annoyance for me, although I've learned to deal with it. For recording with a variety of different microphone types, the phantom power is grouped 1-4 and 5-8, and not available onboard for other channels. If you're recording, for example, one guitar and drumset at once and only 2 of those mics are condensers, you're going to have to either waste two channels on the front and be limited to 8 total or buy a separate preamp or two for the line inputs in the back.Overall:I would definitely suggest this interface to anyone, although I would advise them to consider their specific overall needs first. At the beginning, there were some pops and dropouts, but after some running time they're definitely gone. It's a great first interface to own and will accommodate you until you can drop a serious amount of money into a more professional recording rig.

This interface is sick!!! A million times better quality than 16bit. I had alittle trouble setting it up tho, so heres a quick walkthrough for windows 7 64-bit. Since the installation disc isnt for a 64-bit os you have to download it off the website. It should put an icon on your desktop. click on it, then go down and click on the 'setup' file. This will install the driver. make sure you get the firmware off the website too! This may be kinda obvious but it took me alittle while to figure out. Anyways, great product!

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

I've had this unit for probably 6 months and I've recorded several projects with it. I should say I got it for $300, and I think it's still worth the money at $400. Many people who have latency issues are monitoring through software instead of through the unit, but all I know for sure is that there is no latency with my setup. I like the pres just fine...the only thing I don't adore about it is the plastic knobs, but none of them have broken. I had a firestudio before this, and the thing dropped out all the time. I have not experienced a single dropout in 6 months of daily use.

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

I bought this recorder mainly because it has 14 analog in/6 analog out (4 Line Out, Monitor L/R). It uses USB 2.0, which is nice, but not really important to me. It is a really great recorded, completing disregarding the price. All of the XLR in have phantom power (2 banks with 4 each). I haven't noticed any noise in any recording so far. This interface now support Vista 64 with the newest drivers available on the Tascam website. The only problem I have had is a few dropouts and pops here and there, but they are fixed after adjusting the buffers. With the important stuff out of the way, here are the non-important features that make this interface even better.Volume knobs are chromeEach XLR channel has phantom powerLine In/Guitar ports on the front with padUSB 2.0 really is niceLED indicators to help with setting levels. When recording drums, the LED indicators look awesome during fill-ins or a solo.

This thing rocks i have had it for 2 weeks now and it works like a charm with cubase 4 on vista(32). Its price is great and the preamps have tons of headroom. On the lowest latency setting their almost no delay. I do not have a fancy recording computer i have a intel core 2 duo toshiba at 1.5 ghz. I would recommend this to everyone.

Great price, no problem with full multitracking up to 14 tracks at once with a Dell Latitude D800 laptop. After my initial testing period it became my small studio on the go. Then I can come back to continue mixing at my larger desk. No sync problems as with other overpriced/overranked brands. I really like this unit.

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

I purchased my Tascam US-1641 about a year and a half ago, so I have time to use it and navigate the software several times. I was looking for something to record my band and needed at least 10 inputs. This unit offers 14 analog and 1 stereo digital S/PDIF input! The price was right and it comes bundled with Cubase LE, a powerful and upgradeable software. Initially i had latency problems even with a new Dell Dual Core 1.6 processor set with 2 GB RAM - this is due to the fact that the USB bus in the PC was defaulting it's bandwidth allocation to the slowest device on the bus - like your keyboard or mouse. Once I installed a USB PCI 2.0 card in the machine and dedicated it to the Tascam US-1641, the problems went away. I recorded a live session with my band and it performed flawlessly! The mic pres are quiet and the line interface I used for vocals from the PA and keyboard input were clean as well - no noise. I was able to mix several songs for our CD and iTunes. Are there better interfaces out there? Probably. Are there better interfaces for even twice the price? Probably not. Nice unit for the money!

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

Ordered this interface and hooked it up a couple of weeks ago. Installation was a breeze. Did some individual tracking and then tried a few live takes to see what would work best for us (3 piece Blues/Rock). We had used a Yamaha AW16G before and couldn't get a good rich sound out of it no matter what we tried. With this unit running into Sonar 7 Producers on a Gateway 2GHZ. AMD Athalon with 3 GB ram and a 500G hard drive dedicated to the Recordings we were able to get the fat sound we were searching for. If you have enough computing power to run it, this is definately the way to go.

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

I like the mike pres and the overall product but the XP drivers have given me nothing but grief. They work but, when arming multiple tracks latency becomes an issue. To record all 14 analog ins, I needed to use the highest latency setting and drop to 16 bit. This has been the case with all Xp machines. I haven tried windows 7 yet. Having said that, I can also say that I has worked wonderfully under Mac OS 10.5 leopard. I have a Mac book Core Duo machine using boot camp that I mostly use it with. When I boot Mac OS it works just like I want. Under XP....Not so much.

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

I bought this interface because I wanted enough inputs to properly mic a drum kit without breaking my budget. I chose this over the Presonus Firestudio Project because the price point is so good and with the Musician's Friend 45 day return policy it's worth a try. This unit is a keeper. The construction is solid, the interface is easy to use(Cubase on the other hand...that's a different review) and the US1641 includes everything I will need for a long time to come. Preamps are good (actually great for the price) and it looks sweet in my studio. The only minor complaint is the nearly useless setup instructions.

I am using this on an old Dell P4 laptop with xp pro running reaper using ASIO. The driver setup was relatively painless. There was a lot of tweaking of the computer that needed to be done to deal with clicks and dropouts. Disabling the wireless, antivirus and any other non DAW essential service fixed the problems. I am now recording 5-6 tracks at once and overdubbing with no latency or dropout problems. Preamps sound pretty decent. Overall I like it.

I bought it to use it with Logic Express 8. It was looking for something that was quite portable and had enough inputs to record my band. This was pretty much the only one that had those two key features within my budget. This is my first Tascam product, so was a bit skeptical and made sure the I could return it if I didn't like it. After using it a several times recording in the jam shack, there was no need for that. I was convinced that it was a good buy.

This interface isn't a bad deal for the money it has great pre amps and works with cubase 5, however it is nothing but trouble on my hp laptop. none of the drivers work right with windows 7 laitency is not an issue but the drivers fail to deliver audio at any random time. There are better units out there in the price range if you have a pc with windows 7 and want to save some wasted time and money don't buy the us-1641.

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

Overall, this has been a good purchase. It works exactly as advertised, with the caveat that the user must make sure that they have installed the latest driver and firmware update from the Tascam website (v1.02). I was having a latency problem until I installed the latest drivers. Now, no problems with overdubbing, even though my Windows laptop is an older generation machine. The other thing that users must check is whether the USB controller chipset in their PC is made by nVidia. The Tascam no likey those chips (this is stated on the Tascam website). This device may take a little more than usual effort to set up, but works great once everything is dialed in.
