OVERVIEW

The fast, flexible, and affordable center of your computer music setup.

The 16-channel TASCAM US-1641 MIDI-enabled interface is one of your best choices for getting audio into your computer properly. Equipped with USB 2.0 and enough I/O to record your entire band, the US-1641 audio interface is always ready when you lay down some tracks. Use it to capture live performances, like the fruit of your church choir's hard work. 16 inputs plus and 4 outputs offer enough channels to give every instrument and voice a chance to shine. TASCAM even includes Cubase LE Version 5 with the US-1641 for enough state-of-the art recording power to get the mix just right.

Small enough to fit in a single rack space, the TASCAM US-1641 interface is ideal for both studio and portable computer recording. Since the mic and line inputs are on the front panel, there's no need for crawling behind a rack to get going. The rear panel is armed with 4 balanced line inputs for interfacing with synths, effects, mic preamps, or anything with a line level out. With the TASCAM US-1641 you also get up to 96kHz/24-bit audio resolution without having to lower the input/output count. The US-1641 interface's zero-latency monitoring prevents distracting delays for your performers during recording.

Naturally, the TASCAM US-1641 is ASIO, GSIF2, and CoreAudio compatible for use with Logic Pro, Digital Performer, Cubase, SONAR, Nuendo, Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack, Vegas, Live, GigaStudio, and most other audio recording software.

I upgraded to the Tascam from an M-Audio FastTrack Pro. The main reason for the upgrade was that AvidForce no longer made drivers for Mac; it was completely unusable. Fortunately the Tascam works without any hitches on El Capitan!

Before I begin keep in mind I'm learning! Newbie commentary may be said, but I think what I have to say is useful nonetheless!

An obvious upgrade are the 8 XLR ins, four of which are Phantom Power compatible. This makes the interface extremely versatile for a home studio in the amount of instruments/voices you want to record; even an 8-peice drum set can be recorded individually.

Second, there was a huge improvement in the signal level coming from the mics compared to my previous interface. I get a much more satisfying input level with this interface.

HOWEVER, there is one warning I want to let El Capitan users know. If I leave my interface on, fully connected to my laptop and speakers, after too long of being idle, my computer completely bugs out and has to restart. Not to worry, there are zero lasting repercussions, my laptop is exactly the same, but it has to restart due to some bug. I've also never ran into this problem while actually using the interface and related software. Making this nothing more than a small annoyance.

I still couldn't take away a star because of this, as I feel it is about the El Capitan OS, not the Tascam interface itself. Absolutely amazing value in this interface, and I highly recommend it for any amateur or home studio.

Getting right to the point, my unit was defective right from the start. What do I mean by "defective"?...either the USB cord was defective or the unit itself was defective because the interface was showing up as not being connected by my computer. FYI...I had ALL the updated drivers and software loaded properly and all connections were in place. Fortunately this sites return policy allowed me to return the unit without hassles. I'd also like to mention that the Steinberg recording software is a nightmare to try and understand! Reading the user's manual is painful to say the least and the software itself is exceedingly complex...then again, I'm new to home recording using a computer based software. I researched an audio interface, I saw many mixed reviews for the Tascam 1641. It seems this unit either works or it doesn't and from the other reviews it sounds as if Tascam's customer service leaves a lot to be desired...I'd advise anyone considering this unit to choose carefully. By the way, I bought the M-Audio Fasttrack Ultra 8 along with Sonar 7 recording software as a replacement. I'm still getting things set up but so far so good. I'll write a review on those items at a later date. I'm just starting out setting up a home studio, so I hope my input helps anyone who is doing the same...Todd in Michigan.

I have owned a Tascam US-1641 for about 2 years now and it is absolutely amazing for the home studio. I have recorded a few full albums with it so far and it has been great. I have recorded up to 12 tracks at a time with Zero latency & a very clear sound. Comparable to the Firepod & a great substitution if you don't have firewire!

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

This would have been an awesome set-up for me if the unit didn't malfunction. Worked good for about 6 or 8 months, then I started noticing a 20-30% load on my CPU with nothing running. It got much worse when I tried to mix in a DAW. While it still worked for tracking, I could not mix with it because the CPU load was too great. Turned out to be a defective unit. Thanks to MF for their extended warranty. Too bad about the unit. It had some decent pres and good features for the money. I decided not to get another one as Tascam products are iffy.

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

This interface is sick!!! A million times better quality than 16bit. I had alittle trouble setting it up tho, so heres a quick walkthrough for windows 7 64-bit. Since the installation disc isnt for a 64-bit os you have to download it off the website. It should put an icon on your desktop. click on it, then go down and click on the 'setup' file. This will install the driver. make sure you get the firmware off the website too! This may be kinda obvious but it took me alittle while to figure out. Anyways, great product!

    Zero Complaints

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

I've had this unit for probably 6 months and I've recorded several projects with it. I should say I got it for $300, and I think it's still worth the money at $400. Many people who have latency issues are monitoring through software instead of through the unit, but all I know for sure is that there is no latency with my setup. I like the pres just fine...the only thing I don't adore about it is the plastic knobs, but none of them have broken. I had a firestudio before this, and the thing dropped out all the time. I have not experienced a single dropout in 6 months of daily use.

    No problems here

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

I've had this interface for about 2 months, and haven't ran into a single issue yet. I think really, there aren't too many "bad" audio interfaces out there, you just have to know how to use a computer properly. For those interested, I'm running a pretty cheap laptop, single core 2.20 Ghz CPU, 2 gigs of memory, and running 64 bit of windows 7, and I'm using Reaper as my DAW. I installed it fine, and I use AISO4ALL as my driver for recording.I've noticed though, this thing has some fairly poor drivers written for it though, because my CPU usage is very high when its plugged in and I'm using it for listening to music through my monitors, but my computer is also pretty crappy so that might have something to do with it.The preamps are usable, which is good for an interface of this price considering the amount of inputs. The instrument inputs do what they're supposed to do fine. I've recorded several projects with it, up to 9 tracks at a time, with no problem. For the price vs the number of inputs you get, this is a great unit.

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

picked this up to record band practices in our practice space. I needed more than 8 inputs and didn't want to have to schlep around a mixer. this is really about the only thing in its class, with the 8 mic inputs (18 total if you take advantage of the s/pdiff in and line inputs). it's about the perfect portable recording rig.in terms of sonics, i was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the mic preamps. neutral but not sterile, they get the job done without being a weak link--but at the same time they're not exactly full of stunning character. i didn't care of the sound of them overdriven, either. the phantom power grouping shouldn't matter if you're using dynamic mics, as phantom power typically doesn't affect dynamic mics. ribbons are, of course, a different case. very easy to get it up and running--as others indicate, don't bother with the included drivers, go get the ones from the website. in all, i'm very happy i bought this.

A Great Band for the Buck

    By BTLprod

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

You're definitely not going to find another interface with as many decent channels as this for the price. I've used this interface for multiple independent music recordings. The clarity is good and it's pretty sturdy, even despite the plastic knobs. The Bad:You're probably going to want to immediately throw away the driver disc and download the appropriate ones from Tascam's website. Also the phantom power is a continual annoyance for me, although I've learned to deal with it. For recording with a variety of different microphone types, the phantom power is grouped 1-4 and 5-8, and not available onboard for other channels. If you're recording, for example, one guitar and drumset at once and only 2 of those mics are condensers, you're going to have to either waste two channels on the front and be limited to 8 total or buy a separate preamp or two for the line inputs in the back.Overall:I would definitely suggest this interface to anyone, although I would advise them to consider their specific overall needs first. At the beginning, there were some pops and dropouts, but after some running time they're definitely gone. It's a great first interface to own and will accommodate you until you can drop a serious amount of money into a more professional recording rig.

Xp can be an issue, Mac rocks

    By archieaa1

Comments about TASCAM US-1641 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Computer Interface:

I like the mike pres and the overall product but the XP drivers have given me nothing but grief. They work but, when arming multiple tracks latency becomes an issue. To record all 14 analog ins, I needed to use the highest latency setting and drop to 16 bit. This has been the case with all Xp machines. I haven tried windows 7 yet. Having said that, I can also say that I has worked wonderfully under Mac OS 10.5 leopard. I have a Mac book Core Duo machine using boot camp that I mostly use it with. When I boot Mac OS it works just like I want. Under XP....Not so much.
