This will be quick. Don't let the 2 star review scare you. Yes, there were (maybe are) driver issues with this unit when it first shipped, but there have already been updates. I wouldn't know if you can play YouTube videos through it because, hey, I don't freaking use it to record YouTube, I use it to record 16 tracks at once into Reaper. First time out I recorded my band's gig with it. Crashed twice, but I blame that on my fairly old laptop and the fact that I inadvertently had resource heavy stuff running while recording. Fixed that and it worked perfectly. Drums, bass, multiple guitars, vocals, sax, harmonica. The on-board hardware effects are great for getting a good sound on recording day with no resource cost instead of chasing it with resource hungry plugins on mixing day. The pre-amps are clean and quiet. The proof is in the pudding, and I've mixed 7 tracks from the gig so far with nothing but glowing compliments on the recordings. The only thing I'm sad about is that it only has 8 mic pre-amps. So when it goes back on Stupid Deal of the Day again, I'm going to snap up another one (A) so I'll have a backup, and (B) to use as a stand-alone 8 pre-amp strip to plug into the 8 line-ins on my first one. Love this thing.

I ordered this Tascam us-16x08 back in January, and was excited to get a usb 2.0 audio interface that had so many great mic pre amps to use with my DAW (currently using Reaper) was delivered at the beginning of March (assuming the CA union slowdown at the ports on the delay) didn't have a chance to plug it in till today..

important note my computer is a Windows 7 64 bit machine..

Plugged in my Ribbon mic and a guitar and hoped to quickly drop some sample tracks into Reaper as I use to with my Mackie Pro FX 8.. (great little mixer by the way) but nothing worked. well that's not quite true. I figured out how to bypass sound straight to the monitors and the microphone amps were beautiful, but it wouldn't connect to Reaper.. then I found it wouldn't play anything in Itunes, and it wouldn't play audio from youtube in either Chrome or IE, but it would play audio tracks through Windows Media Player.. after trying to get in touch with Tascam VIa phone for 3 hours (getting disconnected and following their phone tree to dead end extensions that would just ring and ring for 15 minutes) I finally got through to a tech named Richard I think... he had me check a few things which didn't fix anything and said he thinks it's suppose to be fixed when they update the drivers (which are currently version 1.0) a search online finds others on their facebook page which have been having problems since back in March, but yet still here it is May and no updates to the drivers to fix the issue.. Richard said he would talk to some people and see when they might get the driver update, but had no idea how long that would take.. It's frustrating, because I'm assuming after 2 months I won't be able to exchange it, but really I don't want to have to exchange it. it's a piece I bought for a price that is great and should be an amazing piece of equipment.... They just need to figure out this driver issue for WINDOWS 7 64 Bit computers... There is a guy out there that had recorded some drums on youtube that make the thing look amazing.. I just haven't had that experience yet.. but hopefully soon. So maybe think about it if you need some great Microphone preamps, but wait till there is at least one more driver update before you buy it for a 64 bit Windows 7 machine... (even though their website says it should work for such a machine)

Comments about Tascam US-16x08 USB Audio Interface:

What's not to like about this interface? Use it as a 16 channel mixer for live performances and as a 16 channel interface for recording. Do both at the same time! There is no latency on the mixer side.

The only limitation is that there are only two outputs for the mixer. There are 8 outs total but the remaining six are routed through the PC and therefore may have some latency (I have not tested this).

Comments about Tascam US-16x08 USB Audio Interface:

I have used this unit for about 12 months. It is so hit or miss, I am moving back to my M-Audio for the time being. My old Lexicon Omega performs better than this thing has. Latency, all the time, in every setting. I Moved from a Quad core Phenom up to a Quad Core A8 (DDR2 800 up to DDR3 1866), then tested on a clean Skylake build with nothing else on it and it is NOT the systems. It performed the same in any Windows system I plugged it into. The unit will start jittering after several minutes of it working fine, until you switch the latency setting (doesn't matter which setting), it will then smooth back out for a while, then start jittering again after some time, of course to the point that your buffer is too large and you start getting too much latency and are unable to perform parts in time. It is almost incapable of streaming audio quality above 44.1khz with BFD standalone in 64-bit (even with the sample mode bumped down to 16-bit), I plug in my M-audio...works fine. This I attribute to horrible driver support. The Windows 10 supported drivers were a month behind the release of Windows 10 (glad I had a fallback device, though, there was day one support for the 20X20...?...) and were nothing more than horrible ports of the drivers from Windows 7. Seems like Tascam is more dedicated to the 20X20 or the HD units. There have been 2 other updates to the drivers since then, that have not bettered the performance of the unit, and NO firmware updates whatsoever. Matter of fact, the latency issues worsened from 1.02 to 1.04. IT IS THE ONLY WINDOWS SUPPORTED SUB THREE HUNDRED (ON SALE) AUDIO DEVICE WITH AT LEAST 6 OUTPUTS AND MIDI. ALL OTHER DEVICES HAVE ONLY 4 OUTPUTS, NO MIDI(IF YOU NEED IT), OR COST MORE THAN FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY. So, looking elsewhere for my surround recording and mixing. Going to sell this one after replacing it with something better.

Comments about Tascam US-16x08 USB Audio Interface:

My band uses this interface to record drums, and to lay down DI tracks for both guitar and bass in my home studio. I use Logic Pro X on an I-mac and all I had to do get everything going was power it up, and plug it in. There is a ton of gain on the pre-amps which is nice depending on the application. I really like the switch for line level/instrument level on channels 9 and 10. This is the most reasonably priced interface on the market. You CAN record multiple inputs and edit them later, sound quality is great. Can't beat it for the price.

Hello everybody I have been a Tascam user for a very long time My first was a Porta studio 788 and I was excited with my new US-16x08 USB Audio Interface it was great I had not one issue with getting started and recording the band ( Crimson ) worked great with any software I wanted to use. used it for 13 months then one night we were recording the same way we have for about 3 months and smoke poured out of it I thought it had caught on fire, nope it just fried - long story short It fried and it fried my computer also I was able to pull the hard drive and save files on the computer but the US-16x08 USB Audio Interface was DOA
great Idea poor quality, I also have an SD-32SD and use it now, using the same cable inputs I used with the US-16x08 USB Audio Interface. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED but it was not cool

Comments about Tascam US-16x08 USB Audio Interface:

For the price you will not find a better USB interface. I finally replaced my Alesis iO-26 firewire interface after 8 years of faithful service. New Macs don't use firewire connections anymore, so when I upgraded to a new Mac mini (highly recommended as well, btw) my old interface became useless to me. I considered the more expensive Roland units, but this Tascam interface made more sense for my budget. I only needed to download one driver and I was ready to plug in and record. I could instantly hear the difference in sound quality when recording vocals through the Tascam with the same condenser mic I had been using on my old interface. This blows the old Alesis out of the water. Vocals are clear and background noise was greatly reduced. I love the two extra instrument inputs, giving you up to ten channels for (8 for XLR mic cables, 2 for guitars so you can plug in directly for scratch tracks) on the front and another 8 line level inputs on the back of the unit. If you are a young musician just getting into home recording, or a seasoned musician that would like to easily and affordably record demos, this is the interface for you. All the inputs you could ever need, and simple, straight forward layout make this easy to master within a few minutes, not hours. And it only takes up one unit of space in my rack case (rack ears are included). Looking forward to using this is track my whole band for many years to come.

Comments about Tascam US-16x08 USB Audio Interface:

I am setting up a home studio with a 9-piece drum kit. This has enough inputs for a mic on every drum and overheads (plus room to grow).
Setup was simple. I was recording within minutes. I'm using the 16x08 plugged into a Mac and using the Tascam interface and GarageBand. Since I'm new to using a DAW, I'm still learning, but the 16x08 setup quickly and is easy to get used to.

I can't speak for longevity, having just purchased.
I will say for the price and ease of use it's a good buy.
I've been wanting to record multi track drums for years.
I've always mixed all my mics down to stereo. So how it sounded was it.
Now I can tweak every parameter of each mic in GB/Logic.
Immediate improvement in my recordings. Isolating the cross talk has cleaned up my sound a lot.
My MAC mini(16G ram) has had no lag or latency issues.
I plugged it in to my computer, patched my mics, did a quick level check and away I went.
I'm sure there are limitations but it suites my needs perfectly.

Channel 1 to channel 10 is totally usable. Thought you was channel 11 to 16 however, you need mic pres. A cheap mixer could get you two (L and R)

Tascam has always made good and affordable products. They do need to make an affordable Control Service to go along with their new interfaces since they discontinued the FW series Control Service/Interfaces. They didn't offer updated drivers for Mac OS past snow leopard so my FW-1082 is now a paper weight.
