Sweet Interface

Comments about TASCAM US-600 USB Audio Interface:

This is the first audio interface I have purchased, and I must say I am pleased with the product.Since this interface is so new, there wasnt much info to go off of, so I am writing this review to help others out who may be considering this device.I wanted to get something that met the following criteria:1. I needed 4 XLR inputs, as I want to use it to eventually record my acoustic drum set.2. I wanted simultaneous 24bit multiple recording capabilities.3. I wanted XLR inputs, direct 1/4 line inputs, and midi inputs to handle the variety of connections for the musical equipment I have.4. I needed something in the $200 range. This thing fits the bill nicely. I even used the Easter Coupon, so I got it for the right price.I am using this interface with Cakewalk Sonar 8.5 Pro. The installation was very easy. Just open the box, unpack contents, insert CD into computer (I have installed the drivers on Windows Vista and Windows 7 without any issues) then plug in the USB cable when indicated. When I have it plugged in, and open Sonar, the interface is right in the input options, and I can select Tascam US-600 for mono right, mono left, and stereo. The construction is solid, although it is mostly plastic. I would prefer a metal case, but I dont plan on dropping it.Here are a few con's that I have already noticed:There is no power button. I would rather leave it plugged in, and flip a switch, than plug / unplug the power adapter every time I start / stop using the device. The knobs on the front have black plastic coating. It would have been very nice for them to have used rubber instead. They are close together, and you dont really get a good grip to dial in your gain.Other than that, I am very pleased with this audio interface. I have not tried to monitor my input through the computer to see what the lag looks like, but there are settings in the driver software to adjust the buffer size, which increases or decreases lag, so at least you have options there.Overall, I would definitely recommend this product. I am currently running an e609 mic through it for my guitar, bass, and blues harp cabs, and it works great for all of those applications. I am also using a MXL 144 ribbon mic, and I may need to get a pre amp, as I need to crank the gain all the way up in order to achieve the volume range I am looking for in my software. It barely touches the red in the meter, so I guess that works just fine. I know ribbon mic's usually need a lot of gain to get them going.I have not tried the Cubase LE5, as I am using a fully featured DAW suite.

Comments about TASCAM US-600 USB Audio Interface:

This device was purchased to have a portable way to record some audio without lugging around a lot of gear.

IT DOES NOT WORK WITH MOUNTAIN LION!!!! Tascam announced in July they were going to release the driver to make it work........we are half way though September and it still hasn't been released.

It is a useless piece of equipment to those of us running Mountain Lion!

Comments about TASCAM US-600 USB Audio Interface:

It does what it is supposed to do, BUT there are two mayor problems in my opinion:
1) Crosstalk is too high. When you record for example through channel 3, the signal leaks to ch 4.
2) VERY unstable driver. I get a blue screen in Win7 twice day! I have other audio interface (Focusrite 8i6) and I have no problems a all with it. It says there is a problem with tus600_a.sys driver. I have lost my work severl times!

Does not work

By baxter graham

Comments about TASCAM US-600 USB Audio Interface:

my computer met all the requirements and there were no errors during installation. The unit shows up in Windows as a sound card (as it should) but the Tascam control panel does not allow you to control it and all the music software I tried (including the supplied Cubase) do not recognize the Tascam.

Love & Hate (well, maybe not that bad)

Comments about TASCAM US-600 USB Audio Interface:

Would I buy it again? Questionable. Would I recommend it? Mine isn't doing what it's supposed to- you may like the price for what it might do for you. I hate buying finicky gear.
-First- There are 4, count them, only 4 non-digital analogue inputs. Only one (1) of these four is instrument level capable or mic level. The other 3 are line level or mic level. There is one digital audio and one midi input. You can run all 6 at once, theoretically. I've only used the 4 analogue at once. As clean as my sources. -Second- The headphone out will mix your computer output with *2* analogue inputs panned left, and *2* analogue inputs panned right. If your computer monitor signal has too much latency, the hard panned sources can be weird as a reference. -Third- If you don't have this USB'ed to your computer it may not work as a standalone headphone system. Mine sounds crappy when I try that. -Fourth- There is a protocol for turning on phantom power, which doesn't allow you to leave all your levels set from your last session.
If I didn't have another source for phantom power I would be screwed. Sometimes my unit's phantom power puts crackle in outputs. I haven't gotten service for this one yet because I NEED the inputs right now, so I'm suffering with only having two mics running per session (since I happen to only have a two mic supply handy).

Thumbs down!

Comments about TASCAM US-600 USB Audio Interface:

I do not reccomend this product. Look elsewhere.
This may be fine for a few months. But you'll outgrow it quick, or it'll
break before you outgrow it.

It is also not easy to set up and configure with you're computer.

As I personally build and repair computers, any other individual would
have struggled even more than myself.
It gives simple, average, no thrills features.
Made from a fairly thin Acrylic type material.
The buttons are also very cheap. Be careful not to break them off.
The price for the product is generous to the consumer. They got at least one thing right.

Comments about TASCAM US-600 USB Audio Interface:

My MOTU card stopped working in the basement studio a year ago. I wanted something cheap, but something I could unplug via USB to use upstairs on my Gateway, which I bought a few months ago. It will replace my old HP XP eventually, although I still use that with an excellent E-MU 1820, which was nearly three times the price of this one. I find that I'm happy with both units, as I go back and forth between the two computers via a KVM switch- which allows me to use the same monitor and just one keyboard. It's a dynamite little unit, and I bought it after researching it for about two weeks, after considering at least 20 other models. The only possible complaint is that it's only plastic, but it seems durable enough if I don't slam it around. I'm finishing up my new CD with it. And it works Swell With Cakewalk/Sonar (7, 8, and 11)No problems with set-up. Get it. You'll like it.

Comments about TASCAM US-600 USB Audio Interface:

I use this in my home studio setup, which currently consists of the US-600, my laptop, and a little mic preamp. :) I like this interface because it allows you to monitor easily the sound coming from your computer as well as the sound that you're inputing, so it makes monitoring pretty simple. The built-in preamps aren't too bad either. I rather like the tone of my guitar when I run it direct into the interface. Depends of what tone you're after I guess. I also use this interface as an external sound card for my computer, works well for that. It also works pretty smoothly when recording at higher sampling rates. I like that you can switch between mono and stereo on tracks 1/2 and 3/4, that comes in handy when recording my electronic piano with left and right channels. Just gives you more options. Of course, it's light and plastic, so you wouldn't want to drop it or use it in any kind of harsh environment, but it's great if you're looking for something to use in a home studio. Overall, simple to use, and what it does, it does well.
