100% tube to 100% solid state, a variable tone blending mic preamp & DI.

The award-winning 710 Twin-Finity™ is a radically new UA mic preamp design that combines both the classic retro warmth of tubes with the transient bite of solid-state, all in a 2U, half-rack unit. The 710 was created specifically to add the tonal versatility and sonic inspiration missing from generic audio interface preamps. Tone blending is continually variable between 100% tube and 100% solid-state, offering a practically infinite range of unique preamp tones, plus the ability to easily dial-in your own signature sound. There are lots of sensibly priced solid-state and tube preamplifiers out there, but the 710 is the only one that offers the best of both worlds — as well as everything in-between — all in one box, and within reach of any serious project studio’s budget.

The key to its sonic flexibility lies in its innovative circuit design, featuring a solid-state transimpedance input amp simultaneously driving separate, phase-aligned tube and solid-state gain stages, which are then summed to a single output. The mix between the 310 volt single-ended class-A triode tube stage and solid-state transimpedance stage is controlled via the "Blend Knob" labeled "∞". Blending is continually variable between 100% tube and 100% solid-state offering a practically infinite range of unique pre-amp tones and the ability to easily dial-in your own signature sound.

Like all our other preamp designs, the 710 features dual gain-stage controls (Gain/Level) which can radically vary the amount of coloration and distortion by allowing you to crank up the input gain like a guitar amp. The VU meter features a unique "Drive" mode allowing you to see how hard you are driving the input stage.

Versatility makes the 710 the perfect preamp partner for any mic collection. Plus, the discrete JFET DI input circuit can also easily handle any electric instrument. Guitar and bass players will especially appreciate the 710s ability to bring out the best of both active and passive pickups. The 710 Twin-Finity includes a 19" rack-kit for mounting one or two units.

Overrated

Comments about Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity Mic Pre & DI Box:

Bought this as an "upgrade" my home studio. I have a Presonus Bluetube pre I have been using for years and was looking to get more quality out of my recordings. I do a lot of heavily distorted guitars and screaming vocals.First impression of the unit was it was bulkier than the BT so I expected better quality. But the feel of the (aluminum?) is it feels really cheap. Almost like hard plastic coated to look like metal. The knobs felt solid but turning them felt cheap, like the pots were junk. As far as features go, there's some great stuff on here and I like the dipswitch controls.Sound: I A/B this unit with my Bluetube which recently had a new 12AX7C installed. Used the same mic cable, guitar, amp, and Beta57 mic, then level matched the two pre units perfectly. Under 100% solid state control the Bluetube sparkled, had better highs and mids. Since this is where the bulk of my recording is done on SS I was quite dissapointed in that the UA is $800 vs. the $225 Bluetube...Then I went to 50% tube warmth mix. The UA came a bit more warm than the BT but still didn't do anything to justify it's pricetag. Next was 90% tube mix and again the UA had a smoother tone but nothing I couldn't have just dialed in some bass to the EQ and achieve the same result.Overall the UA was a complete disappointment and I returned the unit in two days. If you're looking for an upgrade to your home studio, this ain't it.

Versatility and Quality

Comments about Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity Mic Pre & DI Box:

This preamp is utterly amazing... I've used it on every project no matter what style this thing will dial in amazing tones. For acoustic guitar you slowly roll the trans tube knob and find this sweet spot that opens up all the harmonics of the instrument. Vocals are warm and tubey. Electric guitars can either be warm or crisp depending on your settings, and don't be afraid to push this thing into the red... It has a wonderful vintage break up.

The Best PREAMP! Ever!

By Creston

Comments about Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity Mic Pre & DI Box:

Very versatile and great on vocals and warming up electric guitars. I use this on all my projects, especially vocals. I cannot say enough about how it can deliver warm and detailed vocals. It is worth the small change for a professional preamp. Currently, I own a UA 610 Solo, TL Audio Preamp with compressor and a ART Gold. My AEA ribbon mic works well with the UA 710, giving it enough juice to sweeten the delicacy of a womans sultry voice. Ah yeah!

Great piece, just what I was looking for

Comments about Universal Audio 710 Twin-Finity Mic Pre & DI Box:

The 710 is a great piece, with lots of different tones to flatter any source. As a mic pre it can do super clean to warm. I'm not too keen on distorting the unit on microphone sources but use the crunchy overdriven tones all the time when tracking DI gtr/bas because it really fattens things up and makes it sound less like a DI which is one of the coolest features.
