Comments about Universal Audio UA-S610 SOLO/610 Classic Vacuum Tube Microphone Preamp and DI Box:

The D.W. Fearn tube preamp is twice as expensive but sounds four times better. The preamp in two of my solid-state equalizers sound much better.

Comments about Universal Audio UA-S610 SOLO/610 Classic Vacuum Tube Microphone Preamp and DI Box:

I purchased the Solo/610 specifically to use with a Gibson Les Paul that has a piezo pickup mounted in the Floyd Rose, in addition to the 2 regular humbuckers. When I first plugged into the Solo/610, I tried the humbuckers output just to see how "dirty" the 610's pre-amp stage would get. While it did sound good, it wasn't what you'd get from a traditional valve guitar amp. However, when I plugged in the piezo's output to the Solo/610 is when the magic happened. In my 30+ years of guitar playing, I have never heard such a perfect acoustic sound! It was "that" sound that I had been chasing. Add a little reverb, and I was in pure heaven! Perfect picking clarity, no noise, and a certain "warm", "creamy", but not overbearing tone. The Solo/610 truly shines exactly where it was designed to shine. If you're looking for THE "brown sound" for an acoustic / piezo pickup, look no further. The Solo/610 isn't cheap, but worth every penny! I have yet to try it on vocals, but I'd imagine the Solo/610 could make even my terrible singing voice sound great. Highly recommended and a must for any acoustic guitarist's arsenal.

    New tubes for amazing tone!

    By Matthew Abell

    from Pennsylvania

Comments about Universal Audio UA-S610 SOLO/610 Classic Vacuum Tube Microphone Preamp and DI Box:

I bought one of these used for five hundred bucks. I already own a Pendulum Audio SPS-1 preamp, which, though amazingly clear, can sometimes sound a little too clinical and almost brittle for lead vocals and instruments. I have to admit, I wasn't crazy about the tone of the Solo 610 at first -- it was noisy, distorted easily, and broke up when pushing the input stage too hard -- but the unit was already five years old, so I thought it might be time to change the tubes. I replaced the stock JJ's with a pair of Genalex Gold Lions -- a $90 upgrade. I was expecting a subtle improvement at best. Oh my god! The difference was incredible! Silky smooth with tight bass and punchy mids. The background hiss completely disappeared. Now, I'm in love with this preamp. Whereas my SPS-1 can be a little sibilant and lacking "meat" for lead parts, the Solo 610 makes vocals "pop" in a way that no transformer-based preamp could do. (Bear in mind the SPS-1 has two channels but also costs more than twice as much!) The controls are easy to figure out -- drive the input stage for desired color and adjust the output stage to suit. Works great as a direct box too. I would caution users not to overdo it with the Solo 610, however, since driving it too hard can add a complexity to tracks that makes them hard to mix. If you have another more neutral preamp, save the Solo 610 for lead parts. A highly recommended upgrade for any home or semi-pro studio, especially if you swap out the tubes.

    great preamp for home recording

    By kai-LdZgG

Comments about Universal Audio UA-S610 SOLO/610 Classic Vacuum Tube Microphone Preamp and DI Box:

I use the Solo 610 for recording acoustic instruments and backing vocals at home. The quality of the sound I've been able to capture with the Solo 610 is excellent, on par with the tracks I've recorded in the studio. The boost from this pre is so substantial that I don't have to turn it up past about 5 to get a great depth of sound, which allows me to pretty much wipe out the noise floor. This is a excellent product that allows you to optimize your studio tracking for the instruments that really need that setting (like drums), and do the single-track, quiter instruments at home. Solidly constructed box.

    love it

    By Jim the Rooster

Comments about Universal Audio UA-S610 SOLO/610 Classic Vacuum Tube Microphone Preamp and DI Box:

I love the DI feature, makes a great bass guitar recording box, and sounds real warm and sweet. For mics I love it on voice, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar. fab all around. I like the impedence switch for mellowing out an SM57 on a cranked vintage amp..tames some of that "crackle" you get at high impedence. I put an NOS 5751 in the input (you can experiment). like it so much I'm getting a second. wish it was slightly cheaper
