OVERVIEW

Modern reproduction of the classic 1176 limiting amplifier.

The WA76 Limiting Amplifier is a modern reproduction of the Classic 1176 Revision D. Every effort was made to remain faithful to the original designs including the use of Reichenbach Engineering's (now CineMag) transformer design that was originally used. The classic 1176 was a major breakthrough in limiter technology - the first true peak limiter with all transistor circuitry offering superior performance with a signature sound - and set the standard for all limiters to follow. The ultra-fast attack time and trademark sound have lured legendary artists and studio moguls alike to the 1176 - Peter Frampton, Joe Satriani, Joe Chiccarelli, Vance Powell, and Mike Elizondo are just a few names on a list that's continued to grow, for nearly 50 years.

FEATURES
  • True to the Classic 1176 compressor in design and performance
  • Completely discrete signal path
  • Modeled after the D revision
  • Utilizes USA made CINEMAG input and output transformers
  • Supports the famous "all buttons in" ratio setting
  • Ultra fast attack time
  • Class A line level output amplifier

An affordable alternative to the original.

Comments about Warm Audio WA76 Discrete Compressor:

Just got one of these and did a quick test recording drums with a mono-mic and auditioning the various "ratio" settings including the famous "All-buttons in". Seems to work great... was able to easily dial in a really "fat" bonham-esque drum sound with not too much fiddling. Comparing it to the "plug-in" that comes with ProTools... seems to be superior, especially with the "all buttons in" mode: that setting sounded like garbage on the plug-in, but on this hardware unit it produced a really interesting "blossoming" effect that would be great and very useable on a drum room mic. I'll be using this to add some compression on the front end when tracking various sources, feels like you can't go wrong with this thing, (unless you set the attack too fast and start cutting off the front end of the signal). Overjoyed to be able to afford such a professional piece of kit for my humble home studio.

Comments about Warm Audio WA76 Discrete Compressor:

An 1176 compressor is pretty much a standard piece in most professional recording studios and used on a bazillion hit records. I knew I had to have one and this WA76 is perfect for me as I have no intentions of buying a vintage original. I have many analog compressors and plugins and this WA76 is easily one of my favorites. I find the WA76 is way better than the plugin 1176's as it seems to have a fuller sound with anything I run through it. I find that turning the knobs just gets you to the sweet spot much quicker than playing with plugins. I have a UA LA-610 MKii that I use primarily for tracking vocals but I have been using this WA76 for most everything else. I love adding it to drums and bass and even add it to vocals after tracking. The more I use it the more I like it. I will add another one soon. This compressor has made me a Warm Audio fan and I would like to get more of their products as this was such a good purchase.

I've been a professional recording engineer for 30 years, the WA76 is a fine recreation of a classic compressor at an excellent price.

Comments about Warm Audio WA76 Discrete Compressor:

The WA76 was a great buy for me. I did about two months of research before purchasing and this has worked wonders for me. I have used it on Snare, kick, bass, and vox so far and it sounds great on all. Definitely Adds its own character as it compresses. I love to drive the output transformer to get a thick sound. It really helps the Snare in the mix. I will be getting another on in the next month or two for sure!

Comments about Warm Audio WA76 Discrete Compressor:

Adds more to your mix than you can imagine...Takes care of the highs while leaving the natural sound of the mix alone...BUT adds the warmth needed to enhance the sound rather than changing the sound. I don't think you can get a comparable compressor at a price like this one....just won't happen..
