I don't believe you can do better in this department!
First off, let me say well done Yamaha! The tweakability (if that's a word) of these speakers is remarkable. You can taylor them for any room, which is important because every room has different sound characteristics. The sound quality is also fantastic, in that it produces a flat and clear frequency range. This is exactly what you want in a studio reference monitor. Lastly, Yamaha has given two options in wiring the speakers. You may use either a XLR/ microphone cable or 1/4" phono cable/ 'guitar cable'. This is great for beginners that may not have all the supplys that a commercial studio may have.
As I have mentioned the sound quality is excellent. Although some would say they are lacking in bass, hs-50's are designed ideally for a 2.1 setup, which is a left and right monitor paired with a sub. So get that HS-10 sub too, which is equally great! These speakers were also very well built, despite being "Made in China". The packaging was great too. All around A+
Pro Audio Engineers from all over the country have gave credit to the infamous Yamaha NS-10's. The HS-50's are essentially a modern remake of the NS-10s. Pro's, who have money for the best of the best, have turned in their expensive monitors for these HS-50's. If that doesn't show how good of a value these are I don't know what will! These speakers could easily be priced at a lot more per unit, so get them before they are!

High end killers

Save your money and get the M-Audio BX5a deluxe. The HS50's are ok but have harsh highs that tend to kill you ears after listening to them for a while.

Comments about Yamaha HS50M 5" Powered Studio Monitor - Each:

I love 'em. Higly recommend. They are awful for regular listening, which is why you need them. Get it right on these, and your mix should play nicely just about anywhere. Always recommend having a second pair of something else to contrast with, but these are the ones to do the final on.
They are poweed, customizable to your room situation, polypropylene cones, heavy for the size, so there are large magnets. Port in the back, XLR and quarter inch inputs.
Compact and solid as a rock.
Can't beat the price. 4 yards for a pair of high quality FLAT monitors.

hs50m 5"

Comments about Yamaha HS50M 5" Powered Studio Monitor - Each:

For over 5 Years I used two BX 8a without any problems, but mixes didn't transulate well to small speakers. I purchased two BX5a from Musicians friend. They sent me two used speakers I paid for new monitors) I returned them for new one. The new BX 5a distorted. I returned them and Musicians friend send me a new pair. As soon I received them I plugged them in and one of the monitor didn't even turn on. I was really disappointed because these monitors had great reviews.

I paid a little more and purchased a Yamaha hs 50m 5" pair. I only used them for a few weeks, they seem fine, since using these monitors I don't even use my m-audio bx 8a as much. The mixes transulate well to other small speakers.
This monitors have EQ switches in the back. I don't use them.

I used Yamaha keyboards for many years, they are of good quality, I hope these monitors will be as good.
EQ in the rear of speaker. I don't use them may be useful to others.
Great
Cost a little more then m-audio bx 5 a. but worth the money.

High quality but you'll want the sub-woofer

By shannong

Comments about Yamaha HS50M 5" Powered Studio Monitor - Each:

The clarity, imaging, and response of the monitors is excellent, but they *are* a bit light on the bass. (No more so than any other monitor with a 5-inch driver unless the bass has been boosted, which is a bad thing IMO.) You will definitely want the HS10W sub-woofer to go with these; don't expect to be happy with the monitors alone. The finish and construction is very high-quality. The gain knob is smooth and has a physical detent at -4db, so it's relatively easy to ensure that the gains are balanced in the stereo field. There is a good mix of frequency-shaping switches on the back and they feel solid. Perhaps best of all is the completely quiet power switch--there's no thump or pop when you power these on; you wouldn't even know they'd been turned on except for the very tasteful backlighting of the Yamaha logo underneath the 5-inch drivers. Some people complain about the midrange being too harsh on Yamahas, but the Mid-cut switch on the back takes care of that just fine for longer listening sessions; no ear fatigue at all with the mid-cut.

Comments about Yamaha HS50M 5" Powered Studio Monitor - Each:

These are GREAT speakers - IF and ONLY if you know what you are getting, and how to use them! They are fantastic for hearing everything in a mix, especially those painful and annoying frequencies. They do lack depth as the sound seems to come from right in front of the speaker. Your ears fatigue more quickly on these than on other speakers. However, there are freq. settings on these things that let you control that type of thing. The frequency/room control switches are amazing, great for hearing different things in a mix. I switch the highs on to the +2db setting when I want to rid my mix of those ear-shattering frequencies. The highs are what kill my ears, so I don't leave those on for long. * One key feature is that you can lower the bass and compensate for your room. This is useful if the wall at the back of your speakers is closer than 5 ft. Conclusion - awesome for mixing, horrible for pleasant listening with company. If you want to make an accurate and flat mix that sounds good anywhere, these are for you. If you want to listen with your friends to some awesome jazz while playing scrabble, do not get these!

Comments about Yamaha HS50M 5" Powered Studio Monitor - Each:

It is a strange thing that Yamaha has built their reputation in low/mid-priced monitors on the promise to make your music sound bad - the idea being if you can make it sound good on their monitors, it will sound good anywhere. Anyway, that is why I bought them for my home studio - so their marketing works. I would never use these or recommend them as primary monitors - the quality is just not good enough. I use them as secondary devices both with and without a sub woofer, and in this roll they are great. Pretty even frequency response and they don't take up a lot of room. They also allow a number of adjustments to compensate for room and/or use, which is nice. Very happy with my purchase.

Bought these after just one listen. They are extremely flat and the detail is incredible. These are serious tracking and mixing monitors, not for casual listening. Now I don't have to guess how my mixes will translate to other playback systems or stereos. Awesome speakers at an awesome price!

I cant say enough good things about these monitors. If your mix sounds good, they sound good. If not, they dont. They dont enhance sound like alot of other monitors. Not really good for watching movies because of that... but, they are super strong at any frequency/volume.

Comments about Yamaha HS50M 5" Powered Studio Monitor - Each:

I was in the market for monitors, and was trying to decide between the M-Audio BX5as and the KRK Rokit 5s. After listening to both sets in the store, I decided to go with the KRKs. I took them home, and was initially pleased, but after a few hours I noticed just how bass heavy (muddy) they were. I talked to a friend, and he recommended the HS50s. They were a bit more expensive, but definitely worth the extra cash, he said. So, I returned the KRKs and got the Yamahas.Good lord, am I pleased with my decision. I tell you, these things sound SO clear and flat... I've never heard my mixes in such detail before. I went back and listened to some old mixes I'd done, and laughed at how foolish I'd been. I remixed them, and sure enough, these songs sound SO much better - on every system I listen to them on.These speakers have actually become my main listening speakers, just because I LOVE the detail and clarity. And, unless you're mixing dance music or hip hop, they have PLENTY of bass. Just fantastic.

Comments about Yamaha HS50M 5" Powered Studio Monitor - Each:

Ive only had these monitors for 2 weeks now and im beyond impressed. What got me interested in reviewing them and reading about them was i saw them in the backround of metallica's "some kind of monster", i figured if metallica is using them , they have to be good. Obviously i didnt buy them just because of that , everything i read about them sounded great, so i went and listened to them in the store, and like the other guy - i bought them after one listen. So now to the review. These really are excellent - You COULD say they arent very bass heavy, if your into really gross sounding muddy bass noise. The bass on these ( i think ) is amazingly clear and punchy. It gives you the punch in your chest that is realistically coming from the instruments you played not giving you a false exaggeration of what the bass sounds like or WOULD sound like on a really overly bassy system. They are completely flat, and you will hear things in them that you never heard on your more bass heavy expensive monitors. If your doing rap or dance , i would however suggest getting the kit. Which comes with the woofer. Or buying a seperate woofer of your choice. If you REALLY need that much bass. Then by all means get a woofer. But dont disregaurd the speaker monitors thinking they wont be bassy enough. I strongly suggest going and listening to them in the store. Ask the store if they can sample you something threw them that isnt recorded very well... or even bring in your own tracks in , and just listen to how many little things you will pick up on with these speakers that you dont with some of the speakers 10 times this price.

I am no pro by any means. I have decided to upgrade my studio equipment, finally treat my room, etc. I was using a set of 4" Edirols. I have a small room and don't need anything too huge.I read all these reviews about hearing things in the mix that you didn't hear before. To be perfectly honest, I thought it was a bunch of BS. I purchased these because they had the best reviews on the net in their price range and apparently have a very flat response and are easy on the ears for fatigue.ALL OF THE ABOVE IS TRUE!!! I plugged these in tonight and couldn't be happier. Great purchase!

I have purchased my HS50m two weeks ago and my first impression was "my mixes were so bad before". If you can be able to create a decent mix with these, it sounds good everywhere. Bass frequency of course little week but what do you expect. I think for this price, it is the most reliable monitor in the World recently. It really works.

These are good monitors. I thought about getting ns 10s but then an amp would run me another 800 bucks at least. These get the job done in terms of near fields. I heard about a lot of people complaining about the lack of low end, but what do you expect from 5'' monitors?! come on guys, of course it's gonna lack low end. In a way that's kind of the purpose. These are reference monitors, not mains. You need to spend more if you want to accurately reproduce the low end.

I just received my pair of Yamaha HS50M's and I couldn't be more pleased. The one thing that really startled me was the sound staging of these small monitors. Front-to-back depth was simply amazing! The left to right imaging is great as well. Outstanding clarity in the mids and highs with very controlled bottom end. I can't say enough good things about these. I prefer these over my Mackie HR624's ANY DAY. The best monitors I've owned.

It's to bad my pair of Yamaha HS50M were faulty from the get go. After reading so many reviews saying how great these monitors were, I was very dissapointed to find out that there not at all what there cracked up to be. The highs and mids on them are excellent but the lows? FORGET IT! I threw some drum tracks on for monitoring and the worst buzzing sound leaked out of them. I guess yamaha expects you to buy the subwoofer, to take some of the load off of the left and right near field monitors. Give me a break, but hey I should of known; " YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" save your money and get something a little better Like a pair of Mackies.
