I love 'em. Higly recommend. They are awful for regular listening, which is why you need them. Get it right on these, and your mix should play nicely just about anywhere. Always recommend having a second pair of something else to contrast with, but these are the ones to do the final on.
They are poweed, customizable to your room situation, polypropylene cones, heavy for the size, so there are large magnets. Port in the back, XLR and quarter inch inputs.
Compact and solid as a rock.
Can't beat the price. 4 yards for a pair of high quality FLAT monitors.

High end killers
Save your money and get the M-Audio BX5a deluxe. The HS50's are ok but have harsh highs that tend to kill you ears after listening to them for a while.

Comments about Yamaha HS50M 5" Powered Studio Monitor - Each:
For over 5 Years I used two BX 8a without any problems, but mixes didn't transulate well to small speakers. I purchased two BX5a from Musicians friend. They sent me two used speakers I paid for new monitors) I returned them for new one. The new BX 5a distorted. I returned them and Musicians friend send me a new pair. As soon I received them I plugged them in and one of the monitor didn't even turn on. I was really disappointed because these monitors had great reviews.
I paid a little more and purchased a Yamaha hs 50m 5" pair. I only used them for a few weeks, they seem fine, since using these monitors I don't even use my m-audio bx 8a as much. The mixes transulate well to other small speakers.
This monitors have EQ switches in the back. I don't use them.
I used Yamaha keyboards for many years, they are of good quality, I hope these monitors will be as good.
EQ in the rear of speaker. I don't use them may be useful to others.
Great
Cost a little more then m-audio bx 5 a. but worth the money.

I don't believe you can do better in this department!
First off, let me say well done Yamaha! The tweakability (if that's a word) of these speakers is remarkable. You can taylor them for any room, which is important because every room has different sound characteristics. The sound quality is also fantastic, in that it produces a flat and clear frequency range. This is exactly what you want in a studio reference monitor. Lastly, Yamaha has given two options in wiring the speakers. You may use either a XLR/ microphone cable or 1/4" phono cable/ 'guitar cable'. This is great for beginners that may not have all the supplys that a commercial studio may have.
As I have mentioned the sound quality is excellent. Although some would say they are lacking in bass, hs-50's are designed ideally for a 2.1 setup, which is a left and right monitor paired with a sub. So get that HS-10 sub too, which is equally great! These speakers were also very well built, despite being "Made in China". The packaging was great too. All around A+
Pro Audio Engineers from all over the country have gave credit to the infamous Yamaha NS-10's. The HS-50's are essentially a modern remake of the NS-10s. Pro's, who have money for the best of the best, have turned in their expensive monitors for these HS-50's. If that doesn't show how good of a value these are I don't know what will! These speakers could easily be priced at a lot more per unit, so get them before they are!
Comments about Yamaha HS50M 5" Powered Studio Monitor - Each:
These are GREAT speakers - IF and ONLY if you know what you are getting, and how to use them! They are fantastic for hearing everything in a mix, especially those painful and annoying frequencies. They do lack depth as the sound seems to come from right in front of the speaker. Your ears fatigue more quickly on these than on other speakers. However, there are freq. settings on these things that let you control that type of thing. The frequency/room control switches are amazing, great for hearing different things in a mix. I switch the highs on to the +2db setting when I want to rid my mix of those ear-shattering frequencies. The highs are what kill my ears, so I don't leave those on for long. * One key feature is that you can lower the bass and compensate for your room. This is useful if the wall at the back of your speakers is closer than 5 ft. Conclusion - awesome for mixing, horrible for pleasant listening with company. If you want to make an accurate and flat mix that sounds good anywhere, these are for you. If you want to listen with your friends to some awesome jazz while playing scrabble, do not get these!

I cant say enough good things about these monitors. If your mix sounds good, they sound good. If not, they dont. They dont enhance sound like alot of other monitors. Not really good for watching movies because of that... but, they are super strong at any frequency/volume.

I am no pro by any means. I have decided to upgrade my studio equipment, finally treat my room, etc. I was using a set of 4" Edirols. I have a small room and don't need anything too huge.I read all these reviews about hearing things in the mix that you didn't hear before. To be perfectly honest, I thought it was a bunch of BS. I purchased these because they had the best reviews on the net in their price range and apparently have a very flat response and are easy on the ears for fatigue.ALL OF THE ABOVE IS TRUE!!! I plugged these in tonight and couldn't be happier. Great purchase!

These monitors blew my mind. i had been using the Mackie MR8 monitors for 2 years. they cannot compare to these. the clarity is unreal. if you sit 3 feet from them you'll think you're in an imax theatre. its nice to have a helping hand when mixing. THESE HELP!
Comments about Yamaha HS50M 5" Powered Studio Monitor - Each:
Teamed up with a sub, these are a total delight for audiophiles and studio folk. Yes, they are weak on bass however the range they deliver is spot on for a 2.1 setup. I originally purchased these after my beloved MKII's went to monitor heaven. Every person who has heard these things (including my hard-of-hearing father)has commented on the amazing clarity of the monitors. Never got those compliments with the Alesis twins....The tweeter is ultra crystal clear without tiring the ear from high sibilants. If my Yamaha's were to fail, I would immediately replace them with another pair. Done. BTW, I purchased the Rockit RP-10S Subwoofer (which only needs a hair of gain) and it's the perfect setup. I put the crossover on the sub at 80Hz and kept the HS50M's flat. No EQ needed. I can't emphasize enough how gorgeous these things are to listen to!!!

I have 6.5 and 8 inches Adams and Genelecs. They sound wonderful for LISTENING, but for mixing they have phase problems. I bought these to improve my mixings and WOW ! They translate to any system ACCURATELY. Don't get the sub woofer, otherwise phase problems are going to appear in your mixes. If you want to only enjoy the music get the subwoofer, but don't mix music with it.
