OVERVIEW

2-way bass-reflex bi-amplified nearfield studio monitor with 8" cone.

This proven 2-way powered studio monitor produces the flat, natural sound quality professionals count on to consistently create honest, accurate mixes. With its 8 in. woofer and 1 in. dome tweeter, the Yamaha HS8 carries enough weight to give you full-bodied sound without a subwoofer, yet also deliver the clarity you expect in the midrange, and the finesse to reproduce clean, smooth highs. Since every studio is unique, the Yamaha HS8 active monitor lets you tailor its response to fit your space with custom room control and frequency response switches. So whether you set up your monitors in the corners of a makeshift bedroom studio, or you have the luxury of a full-size professional studio, the HS8 gives you the tools to mix with confidence.

High-performance Speakers and Mounting System
The iconic white-cone speakers used in the HS Series monitors deliver superlative audio performance that is further enhanced by a carefully engineered mounting system. A system of screws and a specially designed mounting ring eliminates spurious vibration and resonance, allowing the speaker to deliver its full sonic potential. Another feature that boosts woofer performance is a magnet selected to produce accurate, solid low-end response. The tweeter frames employ an advanced smooth-contour design that minimizes losses so that high-frequency details come through with remarkable accuracy. The extra thickness of the tweeter frame also minimizes resonance that can interfere with high-end clarity. The overall result is extraordinarily smooth, accurate response throughout the audio spectrum.

The Benefits of Built-in Power and Bi-amplification
Powered, bi-amplified monitor speakers simply make the most electrical and sonic sense, and that's why they have become the first choice of sound professionals the world over for near- and mid-field monitoring applications. In addition to the obvious advantage that you don't need separate power amplifiers, the fact that power and speakers are integrated in one unit means that the amplifiers can be perfectly matched to the characteristics of the speaker units used so you get consistently superior performance with any source in just about any listening environment. Bi-amplification means that separate power amplifiers are used to drive the low-mid and high-frequency speaker units, and this eliminates interaction between the units as well as the response and phase anomalies introduced by passive crossover networks. Both speaker units can function at optimum performance levels for correspondingly high overall sonic quality.

Large Magnets in an Advanced Magnetic Circuit Design
What you'll hear and feel—but not likely see—is the HS8's extra-large magnet under the hood. In combination with an advanced magnetic circuit design, the HS8's magnet provides a powerful, uniform, tightly controlled flux field that results in exceptionally smooth response and dynamic capability over a wider frequency range.

Portable, Versatile Monitoring for Your Audio Workstation
All you really need for top-class stereo production capability is a good audio workstation and a pair of HS8 monitors. A system like this is not only portable and extremely easy to set up anywhere you need it, it can deliver outstanding monitoring performance that will let you get your mixes just right. The response control features of the HS8 lets you tweak it for the best response no matter where you set it up.

Serious Surround Production
Although stereo is still the most common format for basic music listening, 5.1 surround has become the audio format of choice for today's advanced visual media, and is beginning to be recognized as a superior vehicle for pure musical enjoyment as well. But to properly mix and produce surround sound you need a good 5.1 monitoring system. The Yamaha HS8 is the perfect choice if you want mega-studio monitoring performance, but you don't have a mega-studio budget.

Optimum Response In Any Room
Speaker response can vary greatly depending on the size, shape, and surface acoustics of the room in which they're used, as well as how they're placed within that environment. The HS8 gives you extra room-matching and speaker placement versatility with ROOM CONTROL, MID EQ, and HIGH TRIM response control switches that are specifically designed to compensate for common acoustic deficiencies and monitoring needs. The ROOM CONTROL switch, for example, can be used to compensate for the unnatural low-end exaggeration that usually occurs when speakers are placed close to walls or in corners. The MID EQ switch gives you subtle midrange boost and cut options in addition to flat response, while the HIGH TRIM switch offer the same type of response-tailoring capability for the high frequencies.

Comments about Yamaha HS8 Powered Studio Monitor:

I earlier reviewed the discontinued HS-80M, and felt it's the ultimate studio monitor, but this one is superior in build quality, stereo imaging and are even more revieling.
The HS80M's are brutally honost, these new HS8 monitors are (scary, but true) even more!
Everyone's missing the NS10M's, do yourselves a favour and stop missing then as the new HS8's are WAY better!

The "no low cut" can become difficult when adding a sub to some engineers, but we found that putting the sub 180 degrees out of phaze and hi pass at 40 cancels out the 37-40 hz boom and sounds perfect and tight.

On another point, the speaker is unbelievably accurate!
If your mix sounds to dull, it is, if it sounds to toppy, it is, if it sounds boomy, it is...
Great for Near field use, great for tracking, mixing and composing!

I can't say enough good things about these monitors, except it's my favourite near fields ever! Well done, yet again, Yamaha!!!

Comments about Yamaha HS8 Powered Studio Monitor:

I've owned and operated an analogue based studio for years but now I've finally bitten the bullett and gone digital. Used many types of speakers over the years, my favourites being Broadswords, which are crystal clear, unforgiving and which present an extremely 'in your face' mids and highs with a very tight bass - not everyone's cup of tea, as they say.

So, this time I was looking for something which would be more 'accurate', but particularly more natural and definitely more 'musical'. Most of what I do now is Guitar based - both acoustic and small piece arrangements of blues electric guitar over backing tracks etc. Very occasionally I produce commercial videos with voice overs, so the more 'natural' sounding the monitors, the better.

I reviewed several speakers in a specialist center, but most were coloured; some dull and muddy, some too bright and thin. I liked the clarity of the smaller Yamaha units but I didn't like the idea of needing a Sub (for monitoring!? .... Yuch) to get the 'body' I was looking for. Then the engineer switched in the HS8s - Oh My! ... What a difference! It only took me two tunes to decide on them.

So, now they're in the system. The Yamaha HS8s fit the bill pretty much perfectly. Set up was very easy and first impressions are excellent. They are rich, natural sounding, with smooth highs and mid-range, and 'weighty' - with the extra weight an 8" unit can deliver. You definitely do not need the Sub if you set these up correctly and watch for tricky room resonences. Mine sound great and I expect when I've run them in for twenty hours or so they'll sound even better. :-) Incidentally, male and female voices sound very natural from these speakers with no sibilence.

Just for fun, I've just played a high resolution demonstration disc through the speakers and have been gratifyingly impreesed with the HS8s rendering abilities on all kinds of music with a very wide range of dynamics. Absolutely Highly Recommended.

Comments about Yamaha HS8 Powered Studio Monitor:

After mixing on Yamaha NS10m for years with JBL 4411 to check bass response, then Event 20/20 passive, I conclude these new Yamaha HS8 active are even better. It's like having all the clarity of midrange of the old NS10m with bass response that is very acceptable down to 40Hz. With zero dB loss at 50Hz I'm impressed! Clarity in the highs is there. Very impressive for the price I paid. Coupled with room correction I have a pro system for quality mixes that will translate extremely well to other speakers.

Comments about Yamaha HS8 Powered Studio Monitor:

          I have the HS8

Clean power full sound with no frequency to loud, dispite that, you don't need a subwoofer.

Thought they would be very clinically and analytic (have only heard the hs5/50,hs7 and hs80) they arent, but you can still hear what's going on, have been listen to them (got them today) on and off for 8-9 hours and haven't jet discovered any fattigue and i hope that it will continue(very important for a speaker to have this ability)

I am using them for listening to music with a Presonus 22vsl usb soundcard.

What i don't like about it is the woofer dosn't have a perfect finish, the edge suspension is not glued together perfect on my speakers, theres some slightly inperfection

For the reasonably price they are very good, wouldn't know which active hifi speaker i would buy, if i had to choose an active hifi speaker in the same league, price range as the Yamaha hs8.

Great sound. First owned studio monitors. Had some experience with KRK and I liked the sound, but felt everything just sounded great with KRK. In a way that's bad because you cannot have the best sound experience that way.
Buying these Yamaha studio monitors was the best decision ever. I was hesitant because of the price, but hey if you are going to be listening to music everyday. You better have the best speakers.

I just got these HS8 speaker, and right away i love the warm natural sound. but something in the upper midrange or lower end tweeter isn't that good.. it feel as its a little diffuse and not in fase and isn't leveled with top and the bottom, I think is will be in area between 700Hz to maybe 12-1300Hz .. and this is after I has adjusted over several days in use for 2 channels audio, And one of my reference track is one of my favorite Pink Floyd from Pulse album high hopes and Hey You, and of cause Comfortably Numb, also and Dire Straits with Private investigation...
I think my old Behringer B2031A sound better in upper mid area, but old there. but the bas and top is class better on the new Yamaha HS8 much more crisp and clear. the amp is also much better with dynamic.. BUT I HATE the HIGH beam car Projector in the Yamaha Logo.. It light up the whole living room by its self. YAMAHA for you information, indicator light has to be dimmed and only used for signal not light up the whole ROOM.

Just plug them in and you'll hear why these are the industry standard in studio control room speakers. Incredibly clear respose across the frequency spectrum. These would be great speakers for use as external speakers for a keyboard uder as well. I may buy another pair just for that. Top of the line speaker, made very well, just a bit of a large footprint.

The only studio monitor. Clear, colorless sound. Bigger than I thought, though...

The only studio monitor to use. It was advertised as "like new". Not so much but I can get by the cigarette burn, scuffs and dust. It still sounds great!
