OVERVIEW

Ideal for small-group recording or live sound.

The Yamaha 10-Input stereo mixer offers sonic quality that will satisfy the most critical listener, surprising flexibility and ease-of-use, and some advanced features you normally wouldn't find in this type of compact mixer.

Flexible 10-Input Channel Configurations
The Yamaha mixer has a total of 10 input channels consisting of two mono microphone/line channels and four stereo line channels. The stereo channel can be used as mono microphone inputs, providing a total of four microphone inputs when necessary. Gain trim covers a wide -60dB - -16dB range for microphone input, and -34dB - +10dB for line input.

Comprehensive, Easy-access Connector Panel
Top-mounted input and output connectors make setting up and re-patching your system quick and easy. The Yamaha mixer features high-quality Neutrik balanced XLR connectors on both mono microphone/line channels and two of the stereo channels. The XLR-equipped stereo channels can accept mono microphone input either via the XLR or phone jack connectors. The remaining two stereo channels on the Yamaha 10-Input stereo mixer provide phone jack and pin jack connectors for compatibility with a wide range of sources. The two mono input channels also feature insert I/O connectors that let you patch external signal processing gear into those channels as required. Separate pin-jack 2TR inputs are provided to accept the output from a CD player or similar stereo source.

Four High-Performance Microphone Preamplifiers with Switchable Phantom Power
Microphone preamplifiers are critical in any mixer, and a performance bottleneck in many. That's why pros often spend thousands of dollars on just a single channel of microphone pre-amplification. The microphone preamps built into the MG mixers inherit technology from Yamaha's top-line professional consoles, and have been painstakingly designed to deliver superior sonic performance with any dynamic or condenser microphone. All four microphone preamps also feature switchable phantom power so you can take advantage of the natural, extended response of high quality condenser microphones. A single switch turns phantom power on or off for all four channels.

Built-in Channel Compressors
This advanced feature can be a tremendous advantage in achieving great vocal sound. It can also be used to refine the sound of bass, guitar, and other sources. You won't find built-in channel compression on too many other mixers in this class, but in the Yamaha mixer you have Yamaha's innovative one-knob compression feature on mono input channels 1 and 2. Conventional audio compressors with their threshold, ratio, knee, makeup gain and other controls can be complex and time-consuming to set appropriately for a given source. Yamaha's one-knob compressor eliminates the need for an engineering degree with a single control that lets you simply dial in the amount of compression you want.

3-band Channel EQ and High-pass Filter
Building a truly useful, musical-sounding channel equalizer is no easy task, but Yamaha has decades of experience in building pro consoles to draw on, and you reap the benefits in the MG-series mixers. Channels 1, 2, 3/4, and 5/6 feature full 3-band equalizers with LOW, MID, and HIGH controls, while channels 7/8 and 9/10 have 2-band EQ for smooth equalization of stereo sources.

Master & output section

Effect/Aux Sends
The Yamaha MG102C stereo mixer has AUX send controls on all channels, and these adjust the level of the signal sent from the corresponding channel to the AUX SEND jack that can be used to feed external effects or a monitor system. A RETURN control in the master section of both models adjusts the level of the signal returned from external processors via the RETURN jacks.

Stereo, Control Room, Monitor, and Headphone Outputs
Located above the audio mixer's master controls, on the convenient easy-access connector panel, are the main stereo output connectors, phone-jack monitor output connectors, pin-jack recording outputs, and a stereo headphone jack. They may be compact, but these mixers offer plenty of connectivity for a wide range of applications

Lightweight, Portable Design
The Yamaha MG102C weighs only 1.6 and 1.5 kilograms. That's small enough to pop into your briefcase or shoulder bag and easily take with you anywhere. But the performance you'll get at the studio, club, outdoors, or anywhere you choose to use these fine mixers is far from lightweight.

Bright Meters for Visual Level Monitoring
Accurate visual level monitoring can help you achieve maximum signal-to-noise ratio without distortion. The MG mixer's bright, easy-to-read 12-segment LED meters make it easy to control system levels for optimum overall performance.

Easy Operation

All switches, controls, and displays have been designed and laid out for intuitive access and smooth, reliable operation with positive tactile and visual feedback.

I really like this tight little board. Fits nicely behind my kit and I can set n forget the mix while freeing the front people up. My bass drum mic mixes in very well and the built in compression smooths out my mashed potatoes. I`m proud to have my first Yamaha and Musicians Friend has come through for me again with affordable gear we can go use.

This was a restock item I purchased, so I didn't expect it be cosmetically perfect, but did expect it to function properly. Both the main and monitor volumes did not work when it arrived. I was under the mistaken impression that these restock items were, at least, given a check over before they were resold. Apparently not, however, in their usual great fashion, Musician's Friend, made it all right. I didn't want to take a chance on another one of these, so I found a new Peavy mixer that was the same price and they swapped it out at no additional cost to me. You can never go wrong buying from Musician's Friend. They live up to their name.

Comments about Yamaha MG102C 10-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression:

One of the best purchases I have made for the studio over the last year!
I'll give it an 8 for features because it is a simple mixer, but what it does, it does very well!
I bought this mixer about a year ago and I use it daily in my home studio. I have never had a hiccup from it, it performs at 100% all the time as you would expect from Yamaha! No noise from the mic inputs, no scratch on any of the controls, just smooth and quiet. I am impressed! Might buy another to take out on live recording jobs!
For the money you can not go wrong!

Comments about Yamaha MG102C 10-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression:

This was a brand new mixer, maybe I just got a bad one. ??? Like the 6 chan. I can put voice or instrument into. Small but yet sufficient. Did not like the controls had to turn up over half before I had any sound both gain and volume. Quality was bad. Traded in for a Pevey PV-8 instead. I am sold on Peavey. A friend told me about this mixer and thought I would try it. Musicians Friend is a superb company have had no issues and don't expect any from them.

Great Mixer To Start With

By Erik Lehmer

from Bay Area

Comments about Yamaha MG102C 10-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression:

This little guys is the perfect place to start if you need a small and simple mixer. The mic-pres sound good and a pretty transparent. The EQ can be a little noisy but still good for small adjustments and tweaks. The compressors are good for smoothing out levels they dont have a quick enough attack time to work on a drum kit very well but for vocals and guitars they do their job well. Yamaha builds great gear and this one is no exception, a 10 input mixer with 2 channel compressors, you'd be hard pressed to fid a better deal for the money
Compression, 3-band EQ, one Aux send/return and stereo panning all work great. The compression is especially a nice find on such an inexpensive model. If you're looking for more features you can spend a little more and get the model with the built in effects.
Built pretty solidly but still light enough to carry in a backpack or gig bag. The knobs turn smoothly and the connectors fit well
For the price this mixer is probably one of the best out there.

Comments about Yamaha MG102C 10-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression:

This seems really designed for studio and recording work. The monitor functions are not for performance monitors. Can't use the Aux buss for stage monitors as they are post-fader (and therefore affected by changes to the house mix) and there is no Aux Send level to control the Aux mix level sent to powered stage monitors.

If you can live with these limitation it is a nice mixer.

I've had this little guy for 10 years and I've done a lot of rough recording with it. It works very well for just starting out, and even as you progress into heavier things, it would work great! I love this little mixer and I haven't regretted the day I bought it!!!

You can patch a few things in and get the job done with great sound to boot. It pretty much includes all of todays bells & whistles "It's a Yamaha" And the unit allows you to mount it on a microphone stand. (With the optional purchase of the mount) A protective case is a must when transporting it. It's 85% plastic. My only beef is 2 channels don't have a mid in the EQ section. What do you expect for the price.

Using this as a sub-mixer for live drums. For less than 100 clams you get what you pay for. XLR inputs on channels 1 and 2 are really finicky about the cables used plus no effect inserts on channels 3 and 4 makes this an OK mixer for one guy in a bedroom that is going to leave it set up.

We are using it with our electric drums.
The drums go into a channel, the main mix with vocals goes in and the lead guitar goes in.
This way, the drummer can set his mix the way he wants it, and with a headset, he can hear what he wants.

I use this mixer to run my drum mics through . Wish it had more XLR inputs , but not a big deal using 1/4 's . Sounds as good as anybody elses . Small compact easy to move around . Sure there are better ones out there but not at this price .Bottom line , get it . You won't be disappointed unless disappointment is what you're all about .

              Nice Basic Mixer

              By Community User

              from California

Comments about Yamaha MG102C 10-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression:

This is a basic mixer with 2 very nice features, the gain & compression on the mics are better than I was expecting for a unit at this price. Also very nice to have the option to input & output via RCA jacks as well as the standard plugs.

Now for the down sides, this is a restock, so I'm not sure if this is an issue with new units, but the peak meters don't visually represent real levels...they barely move. This isn't a problem for me as I'm recording a podcast, so I am double-checking all levels at the computer as I'm recording.

Limitations/design issues: if you're someone who's travelling with gear and you can be rough on things, this isn't the mixer for you. The plastic outer case seems less than robust...the design has the power cord input high on the back, I'd be concerned about how easy that might break, leaving you with an issue.

All that said, for my needs as an in home podcaster...this unit not only meets, but exceeds them. If you're buying a restock, triple check everything and make sure it works...but that is only fair. I'm pleased with the product and the purchase price.
Everything on the mixer is as describled. The gain & compression work great.
This isn't the sturdiest of construction, but since I'm using it for a podcast in my home, I'm able to baby it. If I were going on the road and it was going to get banged around, I'd be worried about the plastic outer shell, especially around the power cord input.
I purchased a restock for less... works perfectly for my needs and I didn't have to break the bank.

              Recording and or Live

Comments about Yamaha MG102C 10-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression:

Everything about this MG102C is great. I tested all of its input and output features with the help of a patchbay, so I could break in and compare original signals to signals going through the board. Everything is identical when all controls are set to flat response. I've tested it for recording and "garage/live" jamming. To jam live with drum machines, synths and mics, it even works great to shove everything out to a mono bass amp through the Aux Send as an alternative to the stereo or monitor outs. For recording with this type of board, channel in isolation and out assignment can be confusing. It just takes some getting to know the Monitor/Stereo selector switch in order to keep your recordED tracks from going through the board twice while your recordING track is also going through the board. It does route for recording once you know how to do it.

Comments about Yamaha MG102C 10-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression:

I've owned this product & another similar Yamaha mixer. I've been a DJ/KJ for over 13 years. I've had great results with it for DJ shows & when using multiple mics for karaoke. The only complaint is that it doesn't have a button to adjust the mids on the last two channels, but that's pretty minor. Solid product for it's price.

Nice Features, Below Average Sound Quality

Comments about Yamaha MG102C 10-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression:

Maybe I got a lemon.I do like the features especially the low cut and compressor which are hard to find on inexpensive, small mixers but the sound really bothers me.Any time something is run through the Yamaha, low end and 1kHz on up are heavily altered leaving a boxy sounding instrument. Even a tone deaf, inexperienced novice like my wife (her words not mine) can clearly hear the difference when comparing 3 different ways - direct signal, the Yamaha MG102C, and a Mackie 32/8.Also the preamps are weak, needing a lot of gain as compared to 3 other mixers I own (behringer and 2 mackies).I can get kind of close to the original sound using the EQ (which isn't that great either) but there really shouldn't be this drastic of a change in sound.
