Comments about Yamaha MG166C-USB 16 Channel USB Mixer With Compression:
This is a nice mixer for a beginner, or for applications where the highest possible sound quality isn't necessary. It does have a lot to offer but unfortunately falls short for me in some crucial areas.
It does have a lot of useful features such as one-knob compression, EQ, and usb connectivity (although I had to manually update the drivers myself in order to get the ASIO drivers to show up in a software other than cubase).
It's lightweight, sturdy, and the quality of the faders and knobs are decent.
The biggest drawback is the sound quality. The AD/DA (analog to digital, digital to analog) converters are just not good enough for serious recording. I planned to use this as a central input for my analog synth hardware.
Unfortunately, they just sound muddy. There is no clarity or definition in the sound. When I plugged straight into my RME to A/B (which has one of the best converters) it was literally night and day.
Another drawback I found, is that when you are recording through USB instead of analog, you have to increase the gain to an insanely high level in order to reach proper recording signal level.
All-in-all, a nice mixer for a beginner but if you are looking for a high-end sound, not worth the money.
Comments about Yamaha MG166C-USB 16 Channel USB Mixer With Compression:
At first I was taken that it didn't fit my SKB Gig~Box... but a minor modification and whalla! set in combination with dual feed back destroyers, a pair of EQ's, Nady CX 22SW, Furman conditioner, Quadraverb and Composer delivering to a pair of JBL/JRX118SP, pair of EON 15's and three Fender 1270P's... they board performed as I had hoped and now look forward to assigning my Lap-Top to it and making the Best of the USB port at shows... Today I'd say Very Good for the buck... Only one thing I didn't like was the PVC case/wings for rack mount... But I'll live with it.
