Outstanding sonic quality plus digital effects in a small-but-powerful utility mixer.

The Yamaha MG82cx mixer offers sonic quality that will satisfy the most critical listener, surprising flexibility and ease-of-use, and some advanced features you normally wouldn't find in this type of compact mixer. The MG82cx weighs only 3-1/2 lb. and is small enough to pop into your briefcase or shoulder bag and easily take with you anywhere. But the performance you'll get at the studio, club, outdoors, or anywhere you choose to use these fine mixers is far from lightweight.

Inputs & Channels

Flexible 10 Input Channel Configurations
The Yamaha MG82cx has a total of 8 input channels comprised of 2 mono microphone/line channels and three stereo line channels. Two of the stereo channels can be used as mono microphone inputs, providing a total of four microphone inputs when necessary. Gain trim covers a wide -60dB to -16dB range for microphone input, and -34dB to +10dB for line input.

Comprehensive, Easy-access Connector Panel
Top-mounted input and output connectors make setting up and re-patching your system quick and easy. It features high-quality Neutrik balanced XLR connectors on both mono microphone/line channels and two of the stereo channels. The XLR-equipped stereo channels can accept mono microphone input either via the XLR or phone jack connectors. The remaining stereo channel on the MG82cx mixer provides phone jack and pin jack connectors for compatibility with a wide range of sources. The two mono input channels also feature insert I/O connectors that let you patch external signal processing gear into those channels as required. Separate pin-jack 2TR inputs are provided to accept the output from a CD player or similar stereo source.

4 High-Performance Microphone Preamplifiers with Switchable Phantom Power
Microphone preamplifiers are critical in any audio mixer, and a performance bottleneck in many. That's why pros often spend thousands of dollars on just a single channel of microphone pre-amplification. The microphone preamps built into the MG mixers inherit technology from Yamaha's top-line professional consoles, and have been painstakingly designed to deliver superior sonic performance with any dynamic or condenser microphone. All four microphone preamps also feature switchable phantom power so you can take advantage of the natural, extended response of high quality condenser microphones. A single switch turns phantom power on or off for all four channels.

Built-in Channel Compressors
This advanced feature can be a tremendous advantage in achieving great vocal sound. It can also be used to refine the sound of bass, guitar, and other sources. You won't find built-in channel compression on too many other mixers in this class, but in the MG82cx you have Yamaha's innovative one-knob compression feature on mono input channels 1 and 2. Conventional audio compressors with their threshold, ratio, knee, makeup gain and other controls can be complex and time-consuming to set appropriately for a given source. Yamaha's one-knob compressor eliminates the need for an engineering degree with a single control that lets you simply dial in the amount of compression you want.

3-Band Channel EQ and High-pass Filter
Building a truly useful, musical-sounding channel equalizer is no easy task, but Yamaha has decades of experience in building pro consoles to draw on, and you reap the benefits in the MG-series mixers. Channels 1, 2, 3/4, and 5/6 feature full 3-band equalizers with LOW, MID, and HIGH controls, while channels 7/8 has 2-band EQ for smooth equalization of stereo sources.

Master and output section

Effect/Aux Sends
Yamaha's MG82cx mixer has EFFECT send controls on all channels that adjust the level of the signal sent from the corresponding channel to the mixer's internal multi-effect system. The same signal can also be sent to external effect processors via the mixer's EFFECT SEND jack. A RETURN control in the master section adjusts the level of the signal returned from external processors via the RETURN jacks.

Stereo, Control Room, Monitor, and Headphone Outputs
Located above the mixer's master controls, on the convenient easy-access connector panel, are the main stereo output connectors, phone-jack monitor output connectors, pin-jack recording outputs, and a stereo headphone jack. They may be compact, but these mixers offer plenty of connectivity for a wide range of applications

Lightweight, Portable Design
The Yamama MG82cx weighs only 1.6 and 1.5 kilograms. That's small enough to pop into your briefcase or shoulder bag and easily take with you anywhere. But the performance you'll get at the studio, club, outdoors, or anywhere you choose to use these fine mixers is far from lightweight.

Bright Meters for Visual Level Monitoring
Accurate visual level monitoring can help you achieve maximum signal-to-noise ratio without distortion. The MG mixer's bright, easy-to-read 12-segment LED meters make it easy to control system levels for optimum overall performance.

Yamaha MG82cx Built-in SPX Effects
There's an astonishing amount of SPX signal processing power packed into the MG82cx's diminutive chassis. It incorporates a versatile digital multi-effect processor that provides a range of reverb, delay, modulation, and distortion programs you can use to refine and define your sound. Each of the 16 effect programs has a number of editable parameters as well as effect on/off switching capability and return level control. If you need to keep both hands free to play an instrument or perform other operations, an optional footswitch can be connected to the mixer's effect footswitch jack for convenient on/off switching.

Easy Operation

All switches, controls, and displays have been designed and laid out for intuitive access and smooth, reliable operation with positive tactile and visual feedback.

The venues that I play have PA systems but it's
always good to have a portable mixer. I wanted a
small, light weight, mixer so I won't have to lug
my bigger studio one to gigs. I'm a soloist and I
play guitar / guitar synth with backing tracks
and I have small powerful ( EV ) powered speakers.
This mixer is perfect. It has inputs for vocal,
the synth, guitar and the RCA inputs for the tracks. The real plus is the effects. They are as good as my big mixer. The usual Hall 1, 2 Room 1,2, are all familar but I have never seen
the "stage" 1,2. for live performance. But the kicker is the compression feature. All vocals
need compression and almost none of the mixers out there have it as a feature. Even the big, expensive mixers don't have it ( because they expect you to have an external limiter/ comp on the effects send/ rtn ) I was very surprised to see it on a small compact mixer. Another feature is that you can mount it on a mike stand which might be helpful for some of you.
The electronics are not gold plated and so on but there are a couple of things that you can do to make this unit ( and all of your equipment ) more reliable. Use your favorite kitchen clear plastic wrap and scotch tape to seal up the unit when you take it out. Especially if you live in the states that have high humidity or are near the ocean's salt air. That's what kills the unit. Loosely wrap it so you can navigate the controls. Go to you're nearest hardware store and get some electro
contact spray / electro contact cleaner or whatever they call it ( there are different names ). Anyhow, spray all the inputs, outputs, knobs, everything. And spray it every time before you use it. Spray the AC connector on the back, let it dry and connect it and leave it on. It has a good seal on it. Spray frequently and make sure its contact spray NOT LUBRICANT!. Contact spray dries out the contacts and prevents corrosion, your unit will run well for a long tme. Don't go above -0- in the Master, don't go too heavy on the effects and you'll have a nice clean mix on the cheap. Love it.

You may think I am being a bit harsh in this review, but if the mixer doesn't work and can't be used, what good is it? Currently it's not worth anything! The features were nice, but I see a few too many cost-cutting measures in this design. I wished I would have recommended a Mackie, or even a Behringer- which works for a little while at least! I mean, really, PLASTIC case? Cheap connectors?Come on Yamaha, you should know better than that!
I selected this mixer because it had the right number of channels for the job, and the two compressors and FX were added bonuses. I also liked the power connector that has a positive lock on it to prevent it from comming out accidentally. The plastic case sucks though, and there are not very many or very large LEDs on the output meter. It is also missing XLR outputs, which could really be useful in some situations.
I recommended this mixer for a small church installation, trusting that a Yamaha would be a solid product, as I have many Yamaha products that worked well for many years. When I was setting it up, the microphones and guitars being used to test it were going in-and-out. Believing it was the older cables, I swapped them out several times. Then I tried a new XLR cable on the microphone channels. In every case, the sound appears and disappears as I wiggle the XLR and phone plug connectors. This mixer is useless for this installation. I figured it's possible to have a bad connector, but all the connectors were bad! It is therefore my impression that Yamaha may have been using inferior connectors, I suspect the replacement mixer will have the same issues. In the mean time while this issue gets resolved, they are borrowing my Behringer mixer (which I avoided recommending because I have plenty of dead Behringer products!) I can't rate this anything better than terrible for quality because it is totally useless for it's intended purpose.
Unless I see this mixer with good connectors, I think it's a poor value.

Comments about Yamaha MG82CX 8-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression and Effects:

I was looking for a lightweight mixer with effects. This mixer has great sounding reverbs and the compression on vocals is a plus. Incredible sounding mixer for the price. I may never use my fancy powered mixer again. Buy this mixer, you wont regret it.

Comments about Yamaha MG82CX 8-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression and Effects:

I wanted a lightweight mixer to accompany Mackie 350 powered speakers to reduce my set up time for small events. This mixer works great for 2 guitars and 2 vocals. The reverb effects are very good. the distortion effect is not. Overall, this combination is a great alternative to an accoustic amp. You also have to move the gain quite a bit to really impact the sound level. My only complaint is the salespeople automatically add the warranty and its a pain to get them to take it off if you don't want it.

Eventually I'll invest in a bigger mixer, yes mute buttons might have been a nice feature but when you consider the product as a whole and its functionality it really can't be beat.

Comments about Yamaha MG82CX 8-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression and Effects:

I'm guessing most reviews are written shortly after purchase. This mixer usually lasts for me about 1-2 years. I've gone through many of these - maybe 8 over last 10 years. (I started buying these before the compression and effects were avail.) It works well until you get a gig on a humid summmer day and then the connector receptacles cut in and out. You can tap any input connector and the board will cut in and out accompanied with annoying static. You can even just tap any spot on the board and get the same result. Then after touching and jiggling inputs etc. it locks in for the remainder of the gig - maybe!!. You may think I'm a little nuts to keep buying but these - maybe I should get one star!! My reason: the mic stand mountability is necessary for my gig set up, and I do like the compression and effects, sound, and price. Nobody else makes a mic stand adaptor for their mixers. I am going to buy a better built mixer and maybe super glue the mic stand adaptor or screw it on.

The sound on this unit is pretty good. I love the effect and the compression.
