OVERVIEW

Outstanding sonic quality plus digital effects in a small-but-powerful utility mixer.

The Yamaha MG82cx mixer offers sonic quality that will satisfy the most critical listener, surprising flexibility and ease-of-use, and some advanced features you normally wouldn't find in this type of compact mixer. The MG82cx weighs only 3-1/2 lb. and is small enough to pop into your briefcase or shoulder bag and easily take with you anywhere. But the performance you'll get at the studio, club, outdoors, or anywhere you choose to use these fine mixers is far from lightweight.

Inputs & Channels

Flexible 10 Input Channel Configurations
The Yamaha MG82cx has a total of 8 input channels comprised of 2 mono microphone/line channels and three stereo line channels. Two of the stereo channels can be used as mono microphone inputs, providing a total of four microphone inputs when necessary. Gain trim covers a wide -60dB to -16dB range for microphone input, and -34dB to +10dB for line input.

Comprehensive, Easy-access Connector Panel
Top-mounted input and output connectors make setting up and re-patching your system quick and easy. It features high-quality Neutrik balanced XLR connectors on both mono microphone/line channels and two of the stereo channels. The XLR-equipped stereo channels can accept mono microphone input either via the XLR or phone jack connectors. The remaining stereo channel on the MG82cx mixer provides phone jack and pin jack connectors for compatibility with a wide range of sources. The two mono input channels also feature insert I/O connectors that let you patch external signal processing gear into those channels as required. Separate pin-jack 2TR inputs are provided to accept the output from a CD player or similar stereo source.

4 High-Performance Microphone Preamplifiers with Switchable Phantom Power
Microphone preamplifiers are critical in any audio mixer, and a performance bottleneck in many. That's why pros often spend thousands of dollars on just a single channel of microphone pre-amplification. The microphone preamps built into the MG mixers inherit technology from Yamaha's top-line professional consoles, and have been painstakingly designed to deliver superior sonic performance with any dynamic or condenser microphone. All four microphone preamps also feature switchable phantom power so you can take advantage of the natural, extended response of high quality condenser microphones. A single switch turns phantom power on or off for all four channels.

Built-in Channel Compressors
This advanced feature can be a tremendous advantage in achieving great vocal sound. It can also be used to refine the sound of bass, guitar, and other sources. You won't find built-in channel compression on too many other mixers in this class, but in the MG82cx you have Yamaha's innovative one-knob compression feature on mono input channels 1 and 2. Conventional audio compressors with their threshold, ratio, knee, makeup gain and other controls can be complex and time-consuming to set appropriately for a given source. Yamaha's one-knob compressor eliminates the need for an engineering degree with a single control that lets you simply dial in the amount of compression you want.

3-Band Channel EQ and High-pass Filter
Building a truly useful, musical-sounding channel equalizer is no easy task, but Yamaha has decades of experience in building pro consoles to draw on, and you reap the benefits in the MG-series mixers. Channels 1, 2, 3/4, and 5/6 feature full 3-band equalizers with LOW, MID, and HIGH controls, while channels 7/8 has 2-band EQ for smooth equalization of stereo sources.

Master and output section

Effect/Aux Sends
Yamaha's MG82cx mixer has EFFECT send controls on all channels that adjust the level of the signal sent from the corresponding channel to the mixer's internal multi-effect system. The same signal can also be sent to external effect processors via the mixer's EFFECT SEND jack. A RETURN control in the master section adjusts the level of the signal returned from external processors via the RETURN jacks.

Stereo, Control Room, Monitor, and Headphone Outputs
Located above the mixer's master controls, on the convenient easy-access connector panel, are the main stereo output connectors, phone-jack monitor output connectors, pin-jack recording outputs, and a stereo headphone jack. They may be compact, but these mixers offer plenty of connectivity for a wide range of applications

Lightweight, Portable Design
The Yamama MG82cx weighs only 1.6 and 1.5 kilograms. That's small enough to pop into your briefcase or shoulder bag and easily take with you anywhere. But the performance you'll get at the studio, club, outdoors, or anywhere you choose to use these fine mixers is far from lightweight.

Bright Meters for Visual Level Monitoring
Accurate visual level monitoring can help you achieve maximum signal-to-noise ratio without distortion. The MG mixer's bright, easy-to-read 12-segment LED meters make it easy to control system levels for optimum overall performance.

Yamaha MG82cx Built-in SPX Effects
There's an astonishing amount of SPX signal processing power packed into the MG82cx's diminutive chassis. It incorporates a versatile digital multi-effect processor that provides a range of reverb, delay, modulation, and distortion programs you can use to refine and define your sound. Each of the 16 effect programs has a number of editable parameters as well as effect on/off switching capability and return level control. If you need to keep both hands free to play an instrument or perform other operations, an optional footswitch can be connected to the mixer's effect footswitch jack for convenient on/off switching.

Easy Operation

All switches, controls, and displays have been designed and laid out for intuitive access and smooth, reliable operation with positive tactile and visual feedback.

FEATURES
  • 8-input, 2-bus design
  • Built-in DSP for high quality effects
  • 3-band EQ on inputs
  • One-knob compression on 2 channels

This is a nice little unit that has served me well for 2 years now. If you're looking for a mixer that you can toss in a bag and go or a small deck top unit this is it. I just mounted mine in a rack using a Yamaha adapter.(see attached photo. I know some complaint that the case is made out of plastic. Well if you take care of it knowing it's plastic there shouldn't be an issue. It sounds good, very easy to use and has handled all of my mixing needs. I run Behringer powered speakers, a micro-verb for effects, 2 feedback destroyers(great to have) and a small power amp for monitors You won't find anything else out there with all the bells and whistles for the same price.

You may think I am being a bit harsh in this review, but if the mixer doesn't work and can't be used, what good is it? Currently it's not worth anything! The features were nice, but I see a few too many cost-cutting measures in this design. I wished I would have recommended a Mackie, or even a Behringer- which works for a little while at least! I mean, really, PLASTIC case? Cheap connectors?Come on Yamaha, you should know better than that!
I selected this mixer because it had the right number of channels for the job, and the two compressors and FX were added bonuses. I also liked the power connector that has a positive lock on it to prevent it from comming out accidentally. The plastic case sucks though, and there are not very many or very large LEDs on the output meter. It is also missing XLR outputs, which could really be useful in some situations.
I recommended this mixer for a small church installation, trusting that a Yamaha would be a solid product, as I have many Yamaha products that worked well for many years. When I was setting it up, the microphones and guitars being used to test it were going in-and-out. Believing it was the older cables, I swapped them out several times. Then I tried a new XLR cable on the microphone channels. In every case, the sound appears and disappears as I wiggle the XLR and phone plug connectors. This mixer is useless for this installation. I figured it's possible to have a bad connector, but all the connectors were bad! It is therefore my impression that Yamaha may have been using inferior connectors, I suspect the replacement mixer will have the same issues. In the mean time while this issue gets resolved, they are borrowing my Behringer mixer (which I avoided recommending because I have plenty of dead Behringer products!) I can't rate this anything better than terrible for quality because it is totally useless for it's intended purpose.
Unless I see this mixer with good connectors, I think it's a poor value.

Comments about Yamaha MG82CX 8-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression and Effects:

Making the switch from a passive speaker system to a powered speaker system was a hard decision. My Yamaha powered mixer and Yorkville passive speakers had served me flawlessly but I was very infatuated with the 16 channel passive Yamaha mixer and powered speakers they have as a house system at a club I Karaoke host at. This 8 channel mixer is a shrunken version with all the same features and a great price. I did a lot of research and found only excellent reviews on this unit. The effects are top of the line and the vocal echo and EQ controls are superb for assisting singers' voices to make them the best that they can be. I'm sure it would do the same for mixing a band! It fits nicely in a laptop bag and takes only a few seconds to set up. Couldn't ask for a better unit to make my transition flawless!

Comments about Yamaha MG82CX 8-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression and Effects:

The baords has performed well! Love the sound and the effects are much better than I expected! Being ablt to mount on a mic stand was the clincher! Beautiful Idea! Works well! Very stable! I hope they keep this option on future boards! There is a newer version of the board out but hard see how they could have improved this other than XLR outputs! Nice job Yamaha!

Comments about Yamaha MG82CX 8-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression and Effects:

I took a self imposed hiatus from the industry for over 15 years to raise my kids alone. In that 15 years the tech took a huge leap forward. Wow what a difference. The sound quality, the control all in such a small package. This mixer for its size is perfect for an "on-the-go" board, complete with effects. Set up is easy too. As the act grows, so will the board.

Comments about Yamaha MG82CX 8-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression and Effects:

I bought this mixer when my wife and her sisters who sing Southern Gospel Music had to get a new PA system. I bought a Bose L1 and did not want the tone mix unit offered from Bopse. I wanted a small mixer with effects and this seemed to fit the bill, i have not regretted purchasing this unit in any way. It works very well with the Bose and i am more than satisfied with the purchase.

Comments about Yamaha MG82CX 8-Input Stereo Mixer with Compression and Effects:

Yamaha has hit the correct button with this product. Set up is fast, lightweight, compact. The ease of use comes from the straight forward design of the board. It's easy to see where to reach on each channel because everything lines up. The color coded knobs make it even easier to use. The sound we get from this little unit makes it seem 20 times larger than it really is. I love the digital effects for adding flavor & color to a drum mix, in fact this is the second biggest reason to buy this board. The biggest reason for purchasing this board is it fits...meaning it fits well into a small flight case or even travel bag. Transporting gear is the downfall of being a working musician, and this little Yamaha helps take the stress out of loading in and out. YES, all this and I still have my earnings from the last gig!

I really like the compression knobs on channels 1 & 2. I use this to sub mix two bass drum mics. Simplified my drum mic FX setup. Lightweight and Yamaha quality. I did get a rack mount (for free, thank you MF!), but I have to set this on the floor. You'll need the real estate! Look for this mixer with the SPX FX at Musicians Friend. I've seen versions of this board without the FX at the same price point.
