OVERVIEW

Powerful Yamaha recording in a genuinely portable, shirt-pocket-friendly design.

A lot of recorders claim to be pocket-sized, but you've got to have really big pockets to hold 'em. Weighing in at under 2 ounces and being smaller than a palm-sized remote control, Yamaha's Pocketrak 2G is light and compact enough to easily slip in a pocket. The Yamaha recorder features 2GB of built-in memory, long battery life, easy USB file transfer, and Steinberg Cubase AI DAW software, it will become your constant companion in recording sound. Use the portable recorder for making field recordings, capturing voice and song ideas, recording practices, and making audio memos.

The Yamaha Pocketrak builds upon a successful lineage of recording technology and features two tracks of CD quality recording in PCM, MP3, and Windows Media Audio (WMA) formats. It's perfect for podcasting, field and location recording, audio for video, and more.

Its small size, long battery life, and large built-in memory provide Yamaha quality audio recording anywhere and at anytime. The Pocketrak comes with Cubase AI for a complete music production solution and is ready to capture audio wherever and whenever it happens.

The Pocketrak recorder includes a rechargeable AAA nickel-hydrogen battery capable of providing 19 hours of MP3 recording to its 2GB of internal memory. Plugging its sliding USB connector into a powered USB bus simultaneously recharges the battery and transfers files to a PC or Mac.

Furthermore, it's the only portable recorder to house an on-board speaker in addition to a headphone jack, making it a handy portable music player that supports MP3 and WMA files with DRM10 support.

Included in the box with the Pocketrak is a USB extension cable, stereo earphones, a leather carrying case, a stand adapter, and Cubase AI--an "Advanced Integration" version of Steinberg's legendary digital audio workstation software specially built to seamlessly integrate with Yamaha hardware.

Start at the bottom. A pop out USB connector and supplied extension cable makes it a breeze to connect to a PC (I own a MAC and had absolutely NO problems uploading and downloading files)Just recorded three live shows and used the tape outs from a Yamaha 96V and set the input level to 7 with no auto level control and got fantastic results with the MP3 settings and achieved a bit more high end with the PCM setting. I transfered the audio to my 96 bit Pro-tools system for further processing and mastering. This sure beat bringing a bigger rig to the venue. The battery is a new eneloop type and it held a charge for the 2 hour show and had another 4 hours to go. Recording at the PCM level will give you less charge time. I also used the 2G for recording an interview and scratch VO for audio project. The quality of the onboard mics were best at 6 inches below the chin and in wide stereo mode, the separation (aka figure 8) was best for effect and I can see experimenting with placement between two different sources a valuable feature. Navigating the menu with the side buttons is acceptable for such a small unit, but Yamaha manufactured a nice etching on the buttons and button placement so I had no trouble seeing and accessing the functions in low light. The supplied leather case is a nice touch and will protect the 2G. Don't expect a lot of hi-fi sound to come out of it's 1/2 inch speaker, but it's loud enough for preview. Connecting line and headphones is easy with the standard 1/8 inch jacks. Sound through headphones is exceptional and more than adequate. This is one heck of a tiny stereo recorder.

The mics that are built in do not do credit to the recording capabilit of this unit. I was disappointed in the frequency response until I used the Sony stereo mic that came with my Pro Walkman in the external input. Then the recordings were truly CD quality. It's a great unit for size, capacity, rechargability and quality. The down side is the tiny screen and complicated menu system that makes it a pain to use in real life situations. I use it primarily at jam sessions and have failed to get a recording because of the filing system. It would serve my purpose better if it just had an ON and Off recording buttons that recorded to the memory without the folder system. Yamaha has tried to make this a tool for Mp3 joggers, office use for data and recording music. If I had realized the difficulty of dealing with the tiny screen and filing system before the 30 days were up I would have returned it and got something more user friendly.

Comments about Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder:

Microscopically small display / Owners Manual is a joke / not enough memory / If you want something lightweight and compact to do the most basic type of recording this works but is a pain to use due to the ridiculously small display , tiny buttons, etc. Not recommended.

Horrible little mess

By Northwest Mike-44n0o

Comments about Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder:

I like Yamaha gear and wanted to believe in this little recorder, but it's useless. I am very familiar with computers and savvy about accessing drives. This recorder hides audio files and makes them impossible to access via computer. The PCM recording time (for the drive folder that CAN be accessed) is 18 minutes! The manual is awful (9/10ths of it is in other languages and the few English pages don't discuss key features).I'm sending this unit back immediately.

Magic in your pocket

Comments about Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder:

Buy it. The Beatles had a whole building full of electronics and 4 engineers with halitosis and bad gas and you record way better with this sturdy, well engineered gadget the size of a slimline pez dispenser. It is ez and reliable to use. It will charge on your usb port. I love it. It truly brought joy into my life.

Great Tool!

By Yawnny

Comments about Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder:

I recently purchased this compact recorder to record live gigs, for feedback on how things went from the audience point of view. It's the easiest recorder to use: drop it onto the music stand or nearby chair, push rec. . . and that's it! I'm amazed at how balanced and detailed the recordings come out even when placed in compromising positions1 I also use it in my elementary classroom to record songs with my students, and interviews for language lessons. With it's compact size, ease of use, and quality construction. . . it's a great audio tool!

EARPLUGS NOT REQUIRED

By NIC WHITE

from WEST VIRGINIA (NOW)

Comments about Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder:

Well here we all are doing another review of the yamaha pocketrak 2g.I gave mine a test drive today at rehearsal and was very impressed. Our music is mainly a "DREAM THEATRE/MUDVAYNE" kinda band, and we rehearse in a 20ft x 15ft concrete walled basement,so its a very top ended live sound in a small area,so i was a little concerned about distortion. There are 2 100w full stax for the guitars, and i use TWO 1x15 combos from my stereo pedal board left and right, plus of course the singers PA,so its pretty loud in there.Earplugs are definately required for safety cos nobody will turn down and will always say..."you turn up".So i put the pocketrak on the floor in the middle of everything and set the record level on 5.Yes...5!!!Believe me when i say that next time i will try "4".The recorder was easy to use because its a menu click system whereby you highlight the function using the forward and backward buttons and press play to choose, so all straight forward really. The pocketrak is "easy peasy lemon squeezy" to use and is also quick to understand.I hear peeps complain at the screen size being hard to read...well lemmmee tell ya...if you run the contrast full up its easy to read, and even though i will never admit it in a court of law i am 44 years old,so if i can read it after years of looking at stuff then mosst people should be able to as well.We recorded a few tracks and it sounded really good, not quite as good as my sure 57, but for the overall product it did very well, and i just stuck it on the floor with standard mics.i would advise a tripod as this will clear the signal and allow airflow of soundwaves more freely. But despite that the quality was really good and suprised us all.If someone would turn down a bit it probably wouldve been better, but that aint gonna happen i guess.I downloaded the files with ease straight on to my puter.Very straightforward really. This recorder is worth every penny of 150 bux and i would reccommend it to anyone in a band for that quick sketch. The notes can be defined with no distortion, and the pocketrak is very easy to use indeedy. Now for the conclusion. This unit is fantastic for the money and will amaze the owner. My critism is that it is cheaply made, you really got to treat it with kid gloves,i feel that a metal casing would have been better fer sure!!!.Other than that..."GO FORTH AND RECORDIFY!!!".

Quite a capable recorder

By Romel Anthony S. Bismonte

from Latte Plantation, Guam

Comments about Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder:

I originally bought this with the intention to record jam sessions. I ended up using it to "jot down" musical ideas on the piano or wherever else. Its main strength is its portability. Ut could be set up almost anywhere. The sound it records is also pretty good. The recordings I made sounded exceptional to my non-pro-sound-snob ears. I'm pretty sure the noise was from the background and could be cleaned up in post. It's also nice to hear the recording played back without having to plug in headphones. Its main weakness is the clumsy controls. The file directory system seems redundant to me; shouldn't I expect all my recordings to show up in the same folder? Getting the levels right would also seem like a finicky business. I tried recording myself singing while playing the piano, and the voice ended up in a lower level than the piano. You might have to figure out where to put and orient the recorder to get the best mix.I'm satisfied with it. It rewards the diligent. Read the manual.

Comments about Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder:

I bought this unit to record band practice. I'm no computer guy, but there is nothing at all complicated about this device. I was recording ten minutes out of the box. The quality is exceptional, and the price is right. Buy the tripod too !

Comments about Yamaha Pocketrak 2G Pocket Recorder:

I wanted a compact, simple, quality audio recorder. I found that and more in this product. The recording quality is great, and it's remarkably easy to use. Just turn it on and record. My favorite features are the case, the built in speaker, and the built in usb drive. It's perfect for recording jam sessions. This tiny unit does exactly what I need it to.
