I have some Shure 840s that I consider very good for critical listening while mixing. These Yamahas are are just as good and well on par as the Shures. Just like the Shures, they dig deep into the mix and what you hear is what you mixed. I have to make some minor corrections to some of my mixes due to phasing problems. That is a HUGE statement and shows just how accurate these things are. Just like studio monitors, ( I own KRK's and Mackies) don't buy these to listen to your Itunes colloection. These are to be treated as a peice of lab equipment.
They worked out of the box and they seem to have been assembiled well.
Can't beat the price. But what don't Yamaha do that is not excellent? :-)

After extended use, these things put the pain down on my ears. I didn't give them a long time to break them in, because after an hour or two of listening, my ears were in serious discomfort. They tended to apply a lot of pressure to one side of my head, focusing all of the tension on the ear, and since the phones don't wrap around your ears but rest on them this turned into a major problem and I returned them. The sound quality was incredible, but the discomfort was unbearable.

Minimal but Rugged

Comments about Yamaha RH5MA Headphones:

I have used this almost everyday for the past eight years, from listening music to monitoring my Guitar sounds. At first it looks pretty bare-bones and outdated, but it just wont die. After eight years of reasonable abuse the sound and construction is good as new. The thin vinyl on the ear pad has fallen off, but the padding is still alive. It is still comfortable and outputs great sound. To be honest, I`m scared that these phones will outlive me.

    Comments about Yamaha RH5MA Headphones:

I bought this from BHP to mix my projects in my studio. I have a pair of monitors and they do the job well, but I always find myself walking to my car with my laptop to hear the true mix there. Now i think those days are over. The sound of the headphones is simply amazing. No extra nothing, just the perfect sound that you need for your mix. Very light and nice comfortable to use. I went to [@] to compare with bose and other brands like stennheiser, koss and sony but they just could not compete with the yamaha. I always trust the yamaha brand and they have never let me down. Highly recommend them. Buy them!

    Comments about Yamaha RH5MA Headphones:

I don't think so. A great product. i do a little hobby recording, playing. these work nice when recording multi tracks. i can't hear my wife yelling for me in the other room, but i can still hear the guitar or whatever other instrument i am playing. long cord is nice. i kinda wish they woulda came with a bag though. very solid, well built and comfortable. too many headphones are earbuds these days, make the switch to something like this if you want to really hear the music.

    One Side Stopped Working

    Comments about Yamaha RH5MA Headphones:

I bought a pair of Yamaha RH5MA Headphones based on reviews on here and price range. I'm no expert on head phones but they sound much better than my computer speakers and I like the 2 size plug. Problems, 2 months after I bought them. The left side started cutting out when the chord would move around. I only used them at home and I'm very careful with my all my stuff so, don't know what happened. If you have to send yours back they have to go to a Yamaha Pro audio repair place and then will have to be sent back to Yamaha as they are "not field serviceable" I was told. I'd be surprised if they ever return to me.

    Comments about Yamaha RH5MA Headphones:

I added these to an order just so I could have enough Yamaha gear to get a larger rebate. I wasn't expecting anything great, and when I first picked them up I was a little disappointed in the build. They are rather lightweight, and slightly smaller than my Sennheiser HD202's. But.. they really sound good -- clear and punchy, with a tight bottom. Comfortable to wear, not too tight on the head (and I have a big one). I own lot's of Yamaha products, and with these phones, I can still honestly say I have never been let down.

I'm just gonna say this:Pros: Accurate/Flat Response, long cord, can be played loudCons: Low end is a little weak (rolled off), cord is to long for casual use, people next to you can hear your musicBottom Line - these headphones are great for mixing/monitoring but no good for casual use.

The left channel never worked. Stupid on my part as I had thrown away the box before trying the phones. Very disappointed. You would think Yamaha would test the product.

    Comments about Yamaha RH5MA Headphones:

I've had my RH-5MA's for 4 Years now,and I use them everyday.Whether it's listening to Music through my DeskTop,...Recording,...Monitoring,etc.,these Phones are Great! Light-weight,so no Fatigue on your Ears or Head.A Nice Flat response, yet Crispy,Punchy in Sound! They can take quite a bit of Volume B-4 they break up also! I've dropped them (by accident),rolled on the chord a Gazilion times w/my Computer Chair. The Chord has been Yanked on a few times while plugged into my Recorder, and they keep Working, and Sounding Great! You can get a Decent sounding Mix,as they do have a Great Flat Response, but no Headphones can take the place of Studio Monitors,no matter how much $$$ you spend! Even comes w/a 1/4" addapter if needed! These are Really Nice Sounding Phones, and are Built Very Well! Unless you own a Multi-Million Dollar Recording Studio, and see the need to spend $$$ on High-End,....more Expensive Brand Headphones, the Yamaha RH-5Ma's are all you should need! (I.M.O.)

An earlier review I read made the comment that the headphones "dig deep into the mix." That's an excellent way to describe them. I just picked up 3 used sets from a studio liquidation. I just plugged them in and put on some Alex Parsons cuts. Parsons, of course, is a master. These headphones actually do dig deep. 5 Stars at their price point and stands up to many sets twice their price.

        Comments about Yamaha RH5MA Headphones:

Very good sounding phones, I use them for mixing before cranking it up on monitors, works good. The bass is just right, not overwhelming and not weak. The mids and highs also are very accurate.
I have a slightly large head, size 7.75 hat, and these phones are almost too small for me. If I pull them down firmly they reach my ears but a little further down would have been better. If you wear a larger than 7.75 size hat these will probably be too small for you.
Other than that they are great! My very excellent ProLine 650 Ultrasound phones have taken a back seat to these Yamaha phones.
Seems like every time I buy a Yamaha product I am happy with it.
They do not block outside noises, which sometimes is good, sometimes not. Doesn't bother me at all.

          Comments about Yamaha RH5MA Headphones:

bought these to replace a set I lost in a house fire a year and a half ago. I used those for 2-3 years, and they were very flat and true. Comfortable, light,(but not cheap feeling)and well-made. Good enough to replace with the same model, that speaks volumes right there. They can be used to listen to pre-recorded music, but be prepared to hear a very honest representation of the music...no extra bass in these, but all of the original bass AND ITS TRUE CHARACTER is in full attendance.

IMHO these headphones set the standard for performance and performance at a price point. These easily compare to high-end Sony or Fostex and you can buy two of these for the same price. Non-fatiguing, no artificial bass boost, and no sizzling highs, but just accurate music production, which is what a headphone should provide. If you use headphones for extended periods of music listening or mixing, I don't know how you could do better, unless your goal is to impress others that you paid lots of money for a set of _____________ headphones.
