OVERVIEW

Quality stereo recording in a convenient, user-friendly package that fits in your pocket.

Representing a new generation of portable recording, the H2n is Zoom's most innovative hand-held recorder to date. They've packed groundbreaking features into an ultra-portable device that allows you to record pristine audio anywhere you go. From film and broadcast to journalism, podcasting, musical performance, songwriting and rehearsal, the H2n provides amazing recording quality.

New mics, new sound
The H2n features Zoom's best microphones yet and is the only portable recorder with five mic capsules onboard. This design enables the H2n to offer four unique recording modes: Mid-Side (MS) stereo, 90∞ X/Y stereo, 2-channel and 4-channel surround sound.

The first portable Mid-Side recorder
The H2n is the first hand-held recorder to offer Mid-Side stereo recording, a technique used for many years in film and broadcast, where ambiance and surrounding noise are crucial. Mid-Side recording combines a uni-directional Mid mic that captures sound directly in front of you and a bi-directional Side mic that captures sound from your left and right. By increasing or decreasing the level of the Side mic, you can control the width of the stereo field which gives you incredible flexibility over your recordings. If you record in RAW mode, you can even adjust the stereo width after recording.

You still get X/Y
The H2n's onboard 90∞ X/Y stereo condenser mics are arranged with the right and left mics on the same axis. This design ensures that the mics are always equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization and no phase shifting. The result is brilliant stereo recording with natural depth and accurate imaging.

Completely surrounded
Using the H2n's Mid-Side and X/Y mics together, you can create stunning 360∞ surround-sound recordings. Choose between 2-channel mode, which combines the Mid-Side and X/Y mics, and 4-channel mode, which records two separate stereo files, allowing you even more post-production capability. No matter which mode you use, you'll get perfectly balanced, surround sound recordings.

Streamline your recording experience
The H2n is remarkably easy to use. With its newly designed user interface, critical controls are right at your fingertips and make studio-quality recording a breeze. The H2n also houses an arsenal of comprehensive functions, including Auto-Gain, a compressor/limiter, time stamping and more.

The H2n has you covered
Never again will you have to worry about losing recorded data to unexpected errors. The H2n has you covered with its new data recovery function. Whether you experience battery loss or an accidental power-down, this feature will automatically restore your data the next time the H2n is powered on.

20 hours of battery life
The H2n provides over 20 hours of continuous operation on just two standard AA alkaline batteries. This astonishing feature enhances the H2n's flexibility and convenience. In addition, the H2n can also operate using an AC adapter (sold separately).

Bigger and brighter
The H2n's 1.8" backlit LCD display (128 x 64 resolution) provides crystal-clear monitoring and makes it simple to navigate all of the unit's functions.

Turning to analog
Digital volume controls offer too much or too little gain, with no middle ground. The H2n's Mic Gain wheel allows you to dial-in the perfect amount of gain for any given application.

Play it back and listen
The H2n's built-in reference speaker lets you know your recordings have been captured. With its 1/8" stereo output, you can also playback your recordings on your home audio system or listen to your masterpiece using your favorite pair of headphones.

Secure your memories
The H2n uses SD/SDHC cards and can accommodate up to a 32GB SDHC card for over 50 hours of recording time using the 16-bit/44.1kHz WAV format. With 128Kbps MP3 format, you get an incredible 555 hours of stereo recording. The H2n comes with a 2GB SD card to get you started.

Transfer and edit at High-Speed
Use the H2n's High-Speed USB 2.0 interface to transfer files to your Mac or PC. Once your recordings are on your computer, you can easily store, edit, playback, and share your favorite creations. You can even use the H2n as a USB microphone, letting you record directly to your computer.

Software included
Steinberg's WaveLab LE 7 can be used for audio editing and professional-quality mastering. By using its precise waveform editing and high-quality processing, you can refine your recordings into finished works.

Remote control
The H2n's wired remote can be used to start, stop and pause recordings, as well as to add marks. It's also useful in preventing handling noise.

The enclosed software is straightforward for mastering to create a nice consistent recording. It's capable of recording but I haven't used it as such but may soon. The sound of the microphones are great when used as a line in mic to my computer (into garageband) but there seems to be a real sizable lag when doing any dubbing. The amount of lag changes too making it out of sync with the first track, just creates another step of recording onto the recorder, moving onto the computer and synching the new track with the old. The step up in sound quality is totally worth it thought to have a nice stereo track. From what I've read this might be more of a problem with USB as a whole and not the hardware itself.

Really where it think this will shine is in live recordings. It's small enough to go to rehearsals and make a nice reference, but clear enough for shows and create something of pretty releasble quality. I think this little gadget will be see a lot of travel in its day, I might even get into field recording now.
I will be using this soley for music and it seems well suited for live application with compression and limiters to keep from clipping and distorting your recording. A little ding though with the Autogain function, I used it at a practice and was pretty conisently clipping (it's pretty new to me so maybe user error) the resulting recordings were certainly still listenable. Aslo while the remote in the accessory pack would be great, something with out a wire would be better, but this things well packed regardless. Lots of options I've had it a few weeks and am excited to try out the Auto start/stop just to know what this thing is truly capable of.
Seems pretty solid, anyone who is capable of reasonable care of their gear shouldn't have a proablem with this. No super ugly seams, jagged edges or the like. Overall pretty stylish and compact.
Good price on a very versitile product I have no qualms about where my money went.

My first Zoom went bad after about 2 years and when I called them about repairs, they offered to swap for the newer model for a reasonable price, so I did. Recording quality is astounding and most helpful for practice. Too many functions I don't really need. Haven't been able to keep and xnsfer any recordings as the procedure/steps are far too complicated for an old tape recorder guy.The enclosed manual should have a page for just day-to-day use......Sounds Great....too difficult to use.

H2n...VERY Handy Recorder!

By Steve Vaughan

from Brampton, ON., Canada

Comments about Zoom H2n Handy Recorder:

I have owned this unit for six months or so, and use it as a sound check for my solo gigs. Just placing it in the room give nice stereo image plus gives a good idea of how the audience response is.
I work with self produced tracks, and by connecting a stereo cable to the line in I can get a feed of what is coming out of my mixer on two tracks while recording a stereo ambience track on the other two tracks. This is a great way of getting a controlled recording which can be synced up to video of the same performance. (Or a different one!)
The line in also gives me the oportunity to isolate vocal performances, which can be synced up to video or the to the origonal band track.
All in all avery useful recorder!

H2n a great buy!

By Michael Gallagher

from NJ

Comments about Zoom H2n Handy Recorder:

So far, I have used the H2n to record narrations for a project I am working on. Previiously, I recorded using a mic connected to my laptop. I always heard the noise of the fan in my recording. Now, with the H2n, I record in a quiet room and transfer to my laptop later. Sound is awesome! The H2n is easy to use and configure, and the quality of the recordings are so clean and crisp. I would recommend this mic to anyone who wants to do field recordings or needs to record in a quiet atmosphere away from noisy surroundings.

I alos recommend the purchase of the ZOOM H2n Accesory Pack which gives you some nice additions like a remote recording button. Handling the H2n during recording can make for a lot of noise. Checkout eh pack and I'm sure you'll agree.
Multiple recording modes
lightweight and portable
Seems to be well built.
Requires TLC handling because it is primarily plastic, but what isn't these days
For the price, how can you go wrong. A great sounding mic and built recording capability. It'w a winner all around!

Hopeless

By Randall Mascharka

Comments about Zoom H2n Handy Recorder:

I really like what it can do right now. All the rest is a wonderful extra as I learn to use it well.
I finally had a chance to use the recorder after taking minimal time to read the 100 page instruction book. This beast has so many ways to make music sound beautiful! I really want simple! Ok, turn on, point in the direction of the light on top of the unit, press record. Turn gain up if needed. Ok, I totally screwed it up the first time and couldn't figure out how to turn the thing off. Now I read what I needed in the book and I really love it!

Comments about Zoom H2n Handy Recorder:

Everything good said about the recorder is true. I love it in almost every way.

The one problem--no AC power supply.

Batteries are great when you have to use them, but when they are not necessary, they only cause problems. I have thrown away many batteries that still had 20% left when I needed more time than they would allow for.

If you know you will need to use batteries, then I have no qualms about recommending this product highly; but if you will have access to AC power regularly, I would think hard about it.

Comments about Zoom H2n Handy Recorder:

i got this recorder for christmas and i couldnt be happier with it. at first i was a little intimidated by the users manuel but its actually very simple to use. it actually has a tuner and a metronome on here. the only problem with the tuner is that it only reads very specific tunings such as standard, dadgad, open e, and a few others. it wont read half step tunings, but thats why you should have a real tuner. the sound quality is amazing on here and comes with software to edit your music together. the software is the most confusing part of this entire bundle. i guess it just takes practice to get used to. all in all, i highly recommend this product

Comments about Zoom H2n Handy Recorder:

Recorder is well laid out. Clever design and straight forward operation. The only reason I didnt rate it as a five star is due to the flimsy-thin plastic case. Dont believe it will be very durable. The battery case cover is so thin it feels like it will break when you simply try to remove it. Agree with another reviewer about the plastic tripod thread mount.Aside from these two issues it is a great little recorder. Wish it came with the accessory kit.

I damaged my previous Zoom H2n . I would not think of buying another brand because this one is perfect. I actually bought a more expensive Zoom about two years ago and it was too powerful, as it picked up every " mouse sound " in my studio. As usual, Musician's Friend was the best about an exchange. M.F. and Zoom should partner up for an awesome company.

The main reason I purchased this model was for the power supply. To save battery use when I am working at home. I am very happy with this!

Comments about Zoom H2n Handy Recorder:

I use H2n all the time. It makes clear recordings. Just don't plan on using the free software. I never got mine to operate.

I haven't been able to use this effectively yet.

Comments about Zoom H2n Handy Recorder:

The software was easy to download and install. However, it requires some "elicensing" which I have found all the activation codes that came with it and were emailed to me and none of them allow me to activate the software to use!!! Pretty frustrating. Maybe I'm not computer savvy enough....but this should not be so difficult to do!!! I will figure it out somehow....I guess.
