Zoom

World-class recording for everyone.

Representing the next level of professional recording performance, the H4n delivers superior audio quality and dramatically improves the user experience. Zoom's most sophisticated handheld recorder to date will amaze, no matter the application.

Unique X/Y mic design captures perfect stereo images
The H4n's onboard X/Y stereo condenser mics are arranged with the right and left mics on the same axis. This design ensures that the mics are always equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization with no phase shifting. Frequency response remains uniform throughout your recording. The result is great stereo recording with natural depth and accurate imaging every time.

The mics also adjust for variable recording patterns at either 90° or 120°. Our unique design lets you rotate each mic capsule from 90° (standard) to 120° (wide-angle) stereo for the ultimate versatility in any recording situation.

Why four channels are better than two.
Everyone knows that proper miking is essential to making a great recording. The H4n is the only handheld recorder that allows you to record on four channels simultaneously by using its onboard mics with either external mics or direct inputs. You can then use its built-in mixer to blend the channels for perfectly balanced recordings. Now your recordings can be richer than ever before.

Or, to get a great recording of a live performance, use the H4n's onboard mics to get a room mix while simultaneously recording a stereo mix from the mixing board for a live recording that is easily one of the best you've ever heard.

And for media and filmmakers, the H4n makes it easy to record "high definition" audio at 24-bit/48kHz with booms, handhelds or lavaliers while gathering atmospheric audio with the onboard mics. The H4n also supports Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) so your recorded files carry time stamp information. You can even set markers (cue points) during recording or playback.

The H4n is the epitome of sophistication made simple. For anyone who needs professional recording capability with extraordinary versatility, the H4n will give you the ability to capture everything with the clarity and resolution previously found only in the world's finest recording studios. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to make world-class recordings, wherever you are in the world.

H4N Recorder Order

| Review By: Kippur Flax | 2 months, 20 hours ago

Features:

The instruction manual is clear, with good diagrams. I heard about the H4N from at least a dozen other filmmakers; they gave it aces all around for performance quality and consistency. The buttons are easy to use and accessible. I'm taking it out for a test run this week.

Quality:

I especially like the hardy design and materials. It is not flimsy and plastic-y like some of the other recorders I looked at. Good, solid construction.

Value:

When I saw the price, I thought it must be for a refurb or used unit. Nope. It was a brand new unit, packed well and sent super fast.

Overall:

Really well built and designed recorder with clear instructions and excellent durability and sound.

Great little product for those on the go

Features:

This recorder is great for those needing a small, easy to handle, pocket recorder. The additional external microphone jacks allows multi-track  recording and I like the fact that it can run on 3 AAA batteries which means you don't have to spend time and energy looking for a power source. The only down side is that on battery power the unit doesn't completely turns off. It stays in stand by mode which after 5-6 hours totally drains the battery. But this is minor complaint compared to the positive advantages this device offers.

I am an intermediate trombone student with a strong desire to become an excellent musician and collector of unusual and antique trombones.

I had no idea of how I sound, but , this recorder has given me incentive to play my best and make each ptactice session a fun fill adventure. This recorder was purchased at a critical junction in my development..I am impressed with its clarity and tonal quality of what it records. It has made a big difference in what I practice and how I practice my lessons etc

Like no other...

Overall:

I have owned this for about a year and a half. Like another reviewer wrote, I mostly use this for backup sound tracks when I am shooting video.  In many cases, I opt to use the audio captured by the H4N over the audio captured from other mics running along side of it during a video shoot.

I believe the H4N is still the only handheld recorder that will record 4 tracks at once (if it's not the only one - I do believe it was the first).  This was the number one reason I purchased this over competing units - it will record 4 tracks at once.

During interview situations I will set this on a small tripod below my video shot and between the interviewer and interviewee.  On my camera is a 16" Azden AZSGM2X shotgun mic which is highly directional. In the rear of the H4N I will either run two directional condenser mics aimed at my subjects, or an omni directional large diaphram mic that just gets "everything" in the room, depending on the situation.  In all cases the audio captured from the two little mics on the front of the H4N almost always make it into the final cut - even if they are simply mixed with audio from other sources.  They just sound great.  With a little compression you can really bring the sound into the foreground.

I have also set the H4N below my camera when shooting concert footage from along side the sound board at about 50 to 60 feet away from the stage.  With a stereo condenser mounted on the camera, the two front mics on the H4N and two hot leads coming directly from the audio mixing board into the rear of the H4N - again - the audio from the two little mics on the H4N make the final cut - mixed with other sources.

This is a darn good recorder.  Built solid. Yeah, it's plastic, but it feels solid and has stood up to being used under many different conditions.
