OVERVIEW

World-class recording for everyone.

Representing the next level of professional recording performance, the H4n delivers superior audio quality and dramatically improves the user experience. Zoom's most sophisticated handheld recorder to date will amaze, no matter the application.

Unique X/Y mic design captures perfect stereo images
The H4n's onboard X/Y stereo condenser mics are arranged with the right and left mics on the same axis. This design ensures that the mics are always equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization with no phase shifting. Frequency response remains uniform throughout your recording. The result is great stereo recording with natural depth and accurate imaging every time.

The mics also adjust for variable recording patterns at either 90 or 120. Our unique design lets you rotate each mic capsule from 90 (standard) to 120 (wide-angle) stereo for the ultimate versatility in any recording situation.

Why four channels are better than two.
Everyone knows that proper miking is essential to making a great recording. The H4n is the only handheld recorder that allows you to record on four channels simultaneously by using its onboard mics with either external mics or direct inputs. You can then use its built-in mixer to blend the channels for perfectly balanced recordings. Now your recordings can be richer than ever before.

Or, to get a great recording of a live performance, use the H4n's onboard mics to get a room mix while simultaneously recording a stereo mix from the mixing board for a live recording that is easily one of the best you've ever heard.

And for media and filmmakers, the H4n makes it easy to record "high definition" audio at 24-bit/48kHz with booms, handhelds or lavaliers while gathering atmospheric audio with the onboard mics. The H4n also supports Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) so your recorded files carry time stamp information. You can even set markers (cue points) during recording or playback.

The H4n is the epitome of sophistication made simple. For anyone who needs professional recording capability with extraordinary versatility, the H4n will give you the ability to capture everything with the clarity and resolution previously found only in the world's finest recording studios. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to make world-class recordings, wherever you are in the world.

I'm a broadcast engineer who had to choose a new digital platform for our field recordings. We had used minidiscs for years, but the equipment was wearing out. The H4N is a rugged box that can take a lot of field work. Some care needs to be used, but it's not as fragile as minidisc. I built up an aluminum foam-lined carry case for it, so it's easy to take into the field with batteries, accessories and all.

The unit lasts forever on two AA batts. I know a previous reviewer said it doesn't shut off and drains the batteries after about 6 hours. I don't see how this is possible since it can go for over 80 hours on a single set of batts. You must purposefully shut the unit off by holding down the slider-type power switch. As far a I've been able to discern, this truly puts the unit into an "off" condition.

Audio is super clean, and the onboard electret mics are super sensitive, so don't try to do interviews directly into them. Instead, use a standard hand held mic plugged into one of the XLR inputs. This works very well. Even with one mic plugged in, there's a setting for it to record mono (left & right) from that one mic.

We bought it because it was one of the few digital recorders that supported XLR inputs as well as allowed a variety on high level ins with both XLR and TRS. As a last resort, when all else fails, the built-in mics can be used to make your recording, which is great for putting on a mic stand and pick up concert hall stereo recordings with the onboard mics while hard-miking electric instruments and capturing the whole event in 4 tracks!

Versatile, affordable and durable. This unit has it all, even though the menu can be a little confusing to most of us here. Keep in mind the stamina mode removes certain menu items and features, and forces you to record WAV files only (since encoding an mp3 takes more processing power). Also, there's a huge variety of of standard mp3 encoding bitrates all the way up to 320kbps which are compatible even with the oldest wav editor you have with an mp3 filter plugin. We still use Cool Edit Pro 2.1 and the audio files open and edit quite readily from the H4N. There's no special mp3 codec, like MP3 Pro, used in the H4N, thank goodness.

The unit comes with a mic handle mount that fits into any mic clip, or the body can be attached to a tripod with a standard 1/4 threaded mount. The mic handle add-on screws into this same thread on the body of the unit.

It's sophisticated enough, but yet can be operated simply, if you need it.

Get it, I think it's way better than some other units I've seen out there. At least the engineers put a lot of thought into how this unit could be used in a professional field setting, as well as intimate studio settings. It's worthy of your audio recording toolbox and makes super clean and transparent recordings, which was one of the reasons why I bought it for our use. With the add-on of 4 track recording and acceptance of XLR, TS and TRS, multiple mp3 recording formats along with full WAVs, this unit was a no-brainer once we had it in our hands. I couldn't think of using any other recording unit now in the field.

The price has come down significantly since it's introduction (near 4 bills at the time), so it's an even better value today then it was even two years ago!

My previous review from November 2009:
We bought this to replace our tiny consumer-grade minidisk recorder. Not only was it nearly impossible to get a good recording from a professional XLR mic on the minidisk mic plug-in, but the machines have moving parts and over the years the studio minidisks have begun to misread disks recorded on the portable unit.

This Zoom Mp3 recorder works beautifully! It only took me about 5 minutes to understand the basic stuff, and another hour had me running circles around the insides of this thing. It has a metronome and a guitar tuner built in, nice add ons for the musically inclined. But for radio, this makes a great on-the-spot recorder for ENG, or sponsor-voiced ads. Another good feature is the ability to set the unit to record to Left and Right channels (mono mix) from one mic plugged into the XLRs on the bottom. I may point out that mics can also have unbalanced phone plugs too, since this has the nutrix style XLRs in the bottom of it to accomodate all plug types. Also has a mini jack on the back to accommodate a PZM or Stereo camera mic.

The built in speaker is nice, though not terribly loud without rattling, but, it at least can give you a quick check without headphones. The built in mics are super sensitive, like that you would find in an encapsulated ribbon velocity mic. The mics can pick up the wind subsonics that vibrate the diaphragm at super-low freqs, so use a windscreen if you expect any wind at all, or use the built-in electronic Lo-end rolloff or a different microphone.

This unit records good old plain MP3's so even older versions of Cool Edit Pro can open the files it creates without special codecs. The Mp3s are more transparent than the manual intonates they would be, though still better quality can be had with WAV recording which this unit will do! There's all kinds of bit rates to choose from for file size or quality management, and the best part is this unit remembers it settings after it is turned off!

Our sales people can even take this out and look like a genius, because they don't have to remember to set up a bunch of stuff in the menus. The menu navigation took me a moment to figure out how to back out of (the manual doesn't say how to do this), but once I figured it out, it wasn't too bad.

Overall, this is a terrific unit for the money, the quality and quietness of the recordings is astounding, and the dynamic range and sensitivity are great. The general compressor algorythm built into this unit works more smoothly than it's vocal compressor counterpart, but overall, a wonderfully thoughtful arrangment of accessability, functionality, and intuitiveness.

The weight is great, it will stay put where it's placed. I feel like I'm holding some real professional gear with some guts, just like the old Marantz tape recorders, this baby appears to be built very well with a rubberized outer skin and nice little clamshell plastic box resembling that of the old VHS cases to rest it in when you are done! Comes with wall wart, windscreen, a screw on mount to use in a mic stand, or hand hold, or your can put this on your camera tripod with the standard 1/4 inch thread base, also in the box is 1 Gbyte of SD memory to get you started. SD memory is down to a couple of Lincolns for 30 Gig right now, but at 128kbps, you can get over nine hundred minutes on the 1GB card! Lasts up to 6 or 7 hours on two double AA's and up to 11 hours in stamina mode! Not bad for a mini computer!

I highly recommend this unit to start your foray into Mp3 recording in the field, or if you just want to finally dump your cassettes and pass minidisk completely, I believe you will be pleased. Even my most technically neophite salesman could figure out how to record with this unit once it was set up. Get it, I think you'll love it!

I pretty much stated my case in the first portion of this review. I think it's a great little recording device. But any company that allows a product to enter the market with this rediculous registration problem should not be entitled to good review scores. As I said, I love the recorder, but I do worry that this company will look for excuses not to honor the warranty or provide customer support of this product after the extent they have gone to make it so absurdly difficult!!!
This is an awesome little recorder, and I would have given it a 10 rating if not for an important issue involving the software!
It is not a professional level recorder, but it's not supposed to be. But it is close in my opinion. It is great for the price, and it's just makes an incredible recording as far as I'm concerned.
There is a big problem however! These days software designers have the ability to create a device that could basically register itself when you simply plug it into your computer for the first time. and then you fill out the form with your name & maybe the serial number on the bottom.
But the zoom software is made by Steinberg company in Germany, and they have designed the registration process in such a way as to discourage users from completing this critical portion of the process. It is a 20 some step registration requiring multiple downloads of multiple files, all of which need to be registered with different websites and different programs. Just sitting and watching the video they produced to walk you through the registration process was so confusing that I'll probably never use the software and i'll have to go out and buy something else to work with it on my computer. It was so confusing and there were so many steps that it became quite comical after about 20 minutes of sitting through this nightmare "HOW TO REGISTER VIDEO".
I think Woody Allen would get a real kick out of this, it was truly that crazy.
And seriously I can only assume that this company really doesn't want you to register this software, or they would not have made it so incredibly complicated!! You are allowed to use the software for a limited number of times before you must register it, or I guess buy an easier version to register!
That having been said, this is an awesome little recording device!!! I am a singer songwriter who was looking for a way to make some decent quality recordings on the road, and this will definitely do the trick! I sat and played my acoustic and sat about 18 inches away from the recorder with the record level set at 75. The recording I made was the best I've ever heard of myself. Super sound like it was made in a recording studio. As much as I'm incredibly disappointed about the jerkstore way they designed the software registration, I doubt I'll give up this recorder. I'll just have to be happy with it on it's own and not worry too much about hooking it up to my computer. Honestly, that really stinks! Because based on the way this thing sounds, I can only imagine if I were able to edit these files on my computer. ZOOM CORP! IT"S CALLED PLUG & PLAY!!! EVERYBODY'S DOIN IT!!! SPEND A DIME AND FIX THIS ISSUE, PLEASE!!!!!
Otherwise, it's an AWESOME RECORDER!!! In my humble opinion.
Seems good & sturdy to me. It is plastic, but it's also an awesome sounding portable recorder!
Even with the terrible software issue, it seems to be a good value for me. But if you really want to hook it up to your computer, I just don't know what to tell ya! Plan on spending a lot of time trying to figure it out!

Comments about Zoom H4N Portable Digital Recorder with Accessory Pack:

Your computer will not recognize this recorder without registration and licensing the unit. Licensing has been a huge headache for me due to activation codes not working, server being down for maintenance, etc. All I want to do is transfer a file to my laptop, but I have to have the license first. I have used the Edirol 09 recorder with no problems. USB in and no problems- no license required. I bought this Zoom unit from MF for more capability and am sorry I did.

I own several Zoom products, ranging from the original H4, to the hard drive based multitrack/DAW recorders. The H4n is a much improved model of the original H4, offering ease of use and an improved feature set, as well as a better display and operational interface, The buttons and controls are intuitive. The unit has a rugged feel, that seems to indicate that it could stand up to hard field use, considering one took reasonable care. More importantly, recordings are very quiet and accurate. 4-channel simultaneous recording is unusual for a recorder in this class. Factory support is responsive, as I needed a replacement battery cover, and they were polite and took care of my problem. The battery cover is the only drawback to this unit that I can see, as it is somewhat easy to damage if changing batteries in a hurry.

This thing kicks butt!!!

Comments about Zoom H4N Portable Digital Recorder with Accessory Pack:

The H4N is exactly what I was looking for - Something to record band practices, live shows, and be an all-in-one multitrack recorder to use as a scratchpad or to make demos of new songs. I was recording within minutes. It was not difficult to figure out how to navigate through it and what each feature does. Youtube has some great tutorial videos on this that helps greatly also. First test out of the box was just setting it in front of me using the onboard mics and laying an acoustic track. Playback was absolutely clean and silent of hiss. Layed a melody track to it, then layed a second harmony track. Panned both harmonies left and right and wow... sounded fantastic. Huge stereo spead and crystal clear. Next test: Ran my drum machine into the left and right inputs to lay stereo drum tracks. Plugged a bass directly in and chose one of the onboard bass patches. Layed the bass track, mixed the levels between bass and drums and bounced them down to two stereo tracks. Plugged a mic directly into one of the xlrs, mic`d my amp, adjust the recording level and layed two guitar tracks panned left and right. Mixed the levels and bounced all tracks to two tracks and layed a solo over it all. Very, very nice. You can do this as much as you want. Next thing I used it for was recording a gig. Set it to stereo mode and auto adjust for recording level. Popped it on to a mic stand and hit record when going on stage. Very surprised with the quality of the recording. No distorting, no hiss, no noise, just clear music in stereo. Another cool feature is you can playback what you record at halfspeed. So I found some Guthrie Govan on youtube, place the h4n in front of the computer and recorded part of a blazing solo using the onboard mics. Played it back at half speed and said, "oh, so thats what he`s doing!" It can sound a little digitally, but you can CLEARLY hear the notes, halfspeed, maintaining pitch. So to sum it up- I`m very impressed with this little gadget. It is the perfect tool for any musician/sonwriter and I have only begun to scratch the surface. Dont wake up the next morning trying to replay that killer riff you came up with last night, only to find it gone from memory. Get one of these and dont look back. Its worth the extra dough.

Comments about Zoom H4N Portable Digital Recorder with Accessory Pack:

I have owned this for about a year and a half. Like another reviewer wrote, I mostly use this for backup sound tracks when I am shooting video. In many cases, I opt to use the audio captured by the H4N over the audio captured from other mics running along side of it during a video shoot.

I believe the H4N is still the only handheld recorder that will record 4 tracks at once (if it's not the only one - I do believe it was the first). This was the number one reason I purchased this over competing units - it will record 4 tracks at once.

During interview situations I will set this on a small tripod below my video shot and between the interviewer and interviewee. On my camera is a 16" Azden AZSGM2X shotgun mic which is highly directional. In the rear of the H4N I will either run two directional condenser mics aimed at my subjects, or an omni directional large diaphram mic that just gets "everything" in the room, depending on the situation. In all cases the audio captured from the two little mics on the front of the H4N almost always make it into the final cut - even if they are simply mixed with audio from other sources. They just sound great. With a little compression you can really bring the sound into the foreground.

I have also set the H4N below my camera when shooting concert footage from along side the sound board at about 50 to 60 feet away from the stage. With a stereo condenser mounted on the camera, the two front mics on the H4N and two hot leads coming directly from the audio mixing board into the rear of the H4N - again - the audio from the two little mics on the H4N make the final cut - mixed with other sources.

This is a darn good recorder. Built solid. Yeah, it's plastic, but it feels solid and has stood up to being used under many different conditions.

Comments about Zoom H4N Portable Digital Recorder with Accessory Pack:

bought my H4N two months ago and was loving it (easy to use, great sound quality for the price range) until i had a small mishap.

the recorder fel from a desk (about 1ft) onto a soft carpet and one of the mic housings snapped. the mic housings are made from either plastic or very thin metal, and i am shocked that the construction is so weak. searching online, this is an issue H4N users have had for the past 5 years, and Zoom basically ignored it.

the warranty does not cover this type of damage, so zoom's only suggestion was that i buy a new recorder! horrible service when their devices break so easily.

my next handheld recorder won't be a Zoom. beware - unless you're immune to accidents (even very minor ones), expect to have a device that breaks easily with no hope of service..

Comments about Zoom H4N Portable Digital Recorder with Accessory Pack:

This device is very easy to use right out of the box. I'm not an incredibly tech savy person, but I was able to skim through the manuel and start using the recorder in no time. I'm using it for band practices and the sound quality is very good- just need to try different placements around the room to get the best sound.

My only complaint, as mentioned in other reviews, is the software. It is absurdly complicated to get it registered and functioning. I nearly gave up after 45 minutes of bashing my head against the wall. It was comical how difficult it was to figure out. Just forget the Cubase software and use Garageband or whatever.

Registration involves multiple companies and complicated steps, unlike anything I have encountered. I was soured by the initial effort. This unit is more sophisticated than I needed so I will return it for one that is easier to use.
