OVERVIEW

Digital recorder for every situation.

Zoom has been building innovative, great-sounding products for the past thirty years. But with the revolutionary H6-their most versatile portable recorder ever-the bar is raised further still. Four interchangeable input capsules-X/Y, MS, Shotgun, and Dual XLR/TRS Combo-make the H6 the ultimate chameleon of the audio world, and its advanced preamps make it the best-sounding one too. Whatever your application-live recording, professional film/video work, or broadcast ENG (electronic news gathering), etc.-the H6 can handle it with ease. Comes with X/Y and MS mic capsules. Shotgun and Dual XLR/TRS combo are optional.

Audio connections: inputs
The H6 offers four main inputs (1-4), plus two additional inputs (L, R) that are derived from whichever capsule (X/Y, MS, Shotgun, or Dual XLR/TRS Combo) is plugged into the unit. The supplied XYH-6 X/Y capsule also provides a secondary input for connecting an external mic- or line-level signal via a stereo 1/8" Mic/Line In mini phone jack. When a connection is made to that jack, signal from the X/Y microphones is muted.

All four main H6 inputs (inputs 1-4) are combo connectors that can accept either XLR or 1/4" balanced or unbalanced phone cables. They can handle both mic and line-level signals, which means that you can connect either external microphones or line-level devices like mixers, portable music players, electronic keyboards, or electric guitars or basses with active electronics (passive electric guitars or basses can also be connected with the use of a mixer or effects device). Internal switching contacts automatically detect the circuit of choice.

Audio connections: outputs
The H6 Line Out is an unbalanced stereo 1/8" phone jack, located on the bottom of the H6, beneath the LCD display. It carries the analog stereo output signal, as determined by the H6's internal mixer. The H6 USB port, located on the side panel to the right of the LCD display, provides a digital output of either a stereo mix or the six individual input signals, depending upon the setting of the "Audio Interface" function in the USB menu.

In addition, the H6 provides a headphone output with a dedicated volume control, located on the side panel to the left of the LCD display. Connect your headphones to the stereo 1/8" mini phone jack for private monitoring of the stereo output signal. The H6 even has a built-in speaker, located on the underside of the unit, for fast monophonic monitoring of the recorded signal without the need to make any connections whatsoever. This speaker is automatically disconnected when connection is made to either the Line Out or Headphone output.

This is actually a very powerful and reliable product, despite its negative reviews in many places. Unless you are producing a professional pop album or Hollywood movie, there is not really a need to overbuy, spending 2k or more, until you really know mid-level machines and have a real need to upgrade.

The startup time is short, unless you are too impatient to wait 5 seconds. It comes with a sweet case, but that's a little small, so the accessory pack barely fits and only after removing a bunch of stuff. The noise levels of the preamps are relatively quiet if you know how to record audio properly. Can't say much for anyone who only records with the gain up to 10. There are great extra features too, such as a tuner and the ability to have a backup recording at -12 db in case you clip. That's just the beginning. So far the battery life is safe, so I'm very happy all around. Even with its big size, it's much more mobil than an entire studio setup.

The past zooms were easy to operate, impossible to delete, divide files, directions are stupid. Small unreadable font, impossible to function, bad design to do anything, recordingrs are "tiney" and not full, like a kids recorder sounds better, overpriced and complicated, took Musicians Friends customer service about 30 minutes on phone cause they were clueless, need a degree in NASA tech to operate, poor, poor directions manual, 99 pages of unreadable small font that give inane directions that dont jive. Terrible product designed for sound technicians, why did you decide at Zoom to over design and complicate such a expensive unit so inoperable that CS cannot even understand, yet alone consumer, do not buy this unit,.made in north korea

Comments about Zoom H6 Handy Recorder:

With off brand new AA batteries, battery time was short with Phantom power going to two channels.

The file naming does not work properly when you select it to name by date and time and are not using cubase software. It simply uses a sequential naming system and then has a sidecar file with the time name. This is useless inside other editing applications.

The Cubase software is only a trial (or so it says when you insert the CD) and as such is worthless. I'm not installing new trial software when I already have audio editing software. I thought that the software included was simply a LE or light version before I read the install note. don't get fooled by that assumption.

THE AUTO START RECORD/STOP RECORD is a very good feature for video shots. Mounts to camera accessory shoe. Is heavy enough to be durable but light enough to be practical. The ability to use as a audio interface for a DAW is a great bonus! Lots of editing functions built-in. Best "bang for the buck" for location recording A must have for the serious videographer!

Comments about Zoom H6 Handy Recorder:

This recorder is extremely versatile for film and music recording. I love the control and display improvements over the previous HN4 and the additional inputs they added make it a true professional tool that can cover 99% of my work. I bought it mainly for film work but I also use it for demo recording with a small group of musicians. Its super easy to use in all those situations. I like the idea of the mic modules that you can swap out but I hope I am not too rough with it when I take it on the road. The connectors on the modules look solid but I am going to try to treat it gently.

I have had mine for a week and have not done any recording except thru a old handheld recorder, This thing actually excited me and still does, the quality is fantastic, the ease of use is fantastic, it looks wild but also adds to simplistic design, this is not a just got it in the mail glow, I put it to work right off the bat, it was opened box and someone kept the camera strap, it is a great product for me and I will continue to review.

I had help setting the features I would use most. After that it was a breeze to use. The mics are sensitive enough to pick up even a weak voice so that it can be understood. We will be able to give this to a tech reluctant user to use successfully with just a quick lesson.
