Preamp AST Pickup UST Pickup

A dual input preamp with a stereo out, the A2 has a direct frequency response and 21dB of gain. The electronics are mounted in a very small box directly coupled with a high quality end pin jack for easy mounting. B-Band UST under saddle pickup (specify narrow or wide) and AST soundboard transducer both plug into the preamp and provide balanced tone together. Stereo out lets you separate and or mix the signals with your amp.

UST channel has a unique contour filter for upper register tone enhancement. High frequency enhancer switch gives a mild boost to the highs or leaves the signal flat.

Second channel will, if preferred, accept a soundhole condenser microphone or magnetic pickup as an alternative to the AST. DIL-switches to: turn on bias voltage for the mic, turn on a highpass filter for microphone feedback reduction, and lower the gain from 24dB down to 0dB.

Comes with mounting hardware, 9-volt battery clip, and wire harness.

The B-Band UST (under-saddle transducer) still stands as the first transducer that sounds better alone than many pickup/microphone combinations. Designated the "4th Gen UST," this latest UST has been stiffened for better string balance qualities, higher output, greater durability, and lower background noise. Since it is only 0.4mm thick, it usually does not require a new string saddle or adjustment to the saddle cavity. The UST is a flexible, rugged, and constant structure all the way to the preamp. Connection to the preamp is an easy "plug in" without soldering.

The AST (acoustic soundboard transducer) provides unprecedented natural acoustic sound, even at high volume levels. Bigger 14mm pickup surface acts to capture detailed acoustics of the instrument without sounding boxy. All the advantages of a microphone, without feedback and positioning hassles. Attaches to the guitar's bridge plate with a special 2-sided tape. String balance is always even. An ultrathin, flexible and rugged constant structure all the way to the preamp. Connection to the preamp is an easy "plug in" without soldering.

The best I've found

For reproducing the true sound of my acoustic guitars, without piezo quacks, feedback or EQ gizmos, this is it. I use it in all of my acoustics: Tacoma C-1C, Martin D-35 and Taylor 555. The sound guys love it - they just keep it flat and the sound is gorgeous.

Too Much Hiss
Posted by Ted from Victoria, BC on Apr 7, 2006

I have had lots of troubles with this system. A vast improvement in sound quality over a piezo-style under-saddle alone, however it is very difficult to achieve even string balance with the UST, and the hiss coming from the AST can be really bad, especially if you boost the highs at all. After attempting to resolve the problem by contacting B-Band several times (to no avail) I was tempted to just rip the whole thing out I was so frustrated, but didn't because I spent a pile of money on the system with pro installation. I ended up putting a clay shim under the saddle to correct the string balance & have decided to just live with the hiss coming from the AST. In short, don't waste your money. This has potential if B-band would address the balance & noise issues, but until then, I am sure there is a much better pickup system out there.
