For the price this is a great recorder. but dont expect this multitrack to make you Class A song demos. This recorder can give you a decent song demo, but it wont be of the best quality. This recorder actually has alot of built in effects. So for the price I recommend this. But if you are buying this recorder so that your band can get good recordings. Your better off saving your money for the Fostex VF160EX 16-Track Recorder. My friend has it and it I think that for about $200 more, you get a better value.

Okay, I've had this for a year or so, and, well, it does exactly what I thought it would do for this price. I used to have a large ADAT based home studio, years ago, with all the rack gear and the whole nine yards. I sold it all and got out of the music scene for a while. Now however, some six or seven years later, inching my way back in, I thought I'd try a digital 8 track. I got a good bundle deal on this one and honestly I can't complain much (I've recently recorded my second full CD with it that I sell). But long story short, you get what you pay for. For instance, I would like to be able to bounce six tracks with out "mastering". My projects now are vocal mostly with a lot of overdubs. Once you fill up 1-6 you then bounce those tracks to 7&8 (one slider), then "master" 7&8 (flat) to get it to bounce back to a left and right 1&2 so that you can add four more tracks (3-6). So needless to say, in my situation, doubling vocal, 2 or 3 harmonies, and sometimes percusion and guitar, etc. (filling it up to get a big sound from a cheap home studio) you go through 12 - 20 tracks easily. The quality is fine but there's a lot of time spent in the bouncing process. The effects are fair but the feature that's suppose to make your microphone sound like an expensive one suck, and for me there's a lot of other crap that you just don't need with an 8 track recorder (cut and paste features and junk like that, that would be more useful with more tracks. I don't know, if you're just getting started, or you're like me and would like something just to toy with and lay down ideas, or stuff that is mostly vocal, it works pretty good. Also the more you fill up the hard drive the slower the response time between rewind, play, rec., etc., and during final mix if you try to quickly bring down (or up) a fader it doesn't respond realtime, it takes a second. It's better to punch in at a lower (or higher) fader level. As a last thought, if I had to do it all over again, I would've spent a few hundred dollars more for something better. And in fact, now that my CD's are selling (made with this recorder mind you). I will probably soon go ahead and invest in something better.

Worth The Study!!!

This is a classic unit and well worth the time it takes to study the manual, but you will need to study the manual as you go! having to exchange tracks out to virtual tracks and ping pong record to stereo track 7/8 actually develops good process for recording as you tweek sound along the way...Great mastering and pre-mastering FX and EQ. The 50/50 high/low track by track EQ is very useful as are the excellent effects. Get around FX limit of one at a time by ping pong recording (in manual)...You will need a mic pre-amp and/or processor because if you use the mic line straight you will have to turn up the trim, anything over 75% and you'll hear the harddrive on the recording (only flaw encountered). All in all amazing device and the track limit is actually only virtual and you can do whatever you want...Use the wavescrub and set your edit points, even set complex FX shifts as you play, bounce and master via Map/Scene functions...AAA+++ on this product. Great Job Fostex!!!

Very easy to use, great internal mastering.

This machine really surprised me, I read reviews previous to my purchase and I was a little worried on how complicated it would be. But as it turns out, this machine is extremely easy to use, and has really detailed/easy-to-folow instructions. I have owned it for about a week, and I have already recorded, mixed, mastered, and made cd-r copies of three of my songs. The truth is you can spend a couple of hours reading the manual and know exactly what to do, or you can try and figure it out without reading and never figure it out. Everything you could possibly want to know is in the manual. The internal mastering on this machine is great, it has different combinations listed in the manual for different mastering effects, in other words you just match up the options to your desired effect! Essential for one man projects!
