Back, Shown with Optional VS20-VGA card with Monitor (not included)

The Roland VS-2000CD Digital Studio Workstation sets a new standard for affordable digital recording. With 18 playback tracks, 8 XLR inputs, and support for 3rd-party plug-ins using the optional VS8F-3, this next-generation V-Studio gives users the power to create like never before. The optional VS20-VGA adds a VGA output and mouse port for enhanced graphical editing and control.

Pro Recording at a Great Price

The recorder supports 16- or 24-bit recording with up to 8 tracks of simultaneous recording at 16 bits plus 18-track playback and a stereo mastering track. In the high-quality 24-bit mode, you get 8-track simultaneous recording with 12-track playback. The internal 40GB hard drive provides hours of reliable multitracking while 320 Virtual Tracks give you plenty of room for creativity in comping various takes.

40-Channel Digital Mixer

Whether you're miking up a drum kit or recording a vocal group, you'll appreciate the 8 XLR/TRS inputs with phantom power. Want to record a guitar direct? No problem-there's a Hi-Z input. A S/PDIF input lets you stay in the digital domain all the way. 17 faders, dedicated channel knobs, plus 4 knobs for controlling the dynamics and 4-band EQ for any input or track give you the tactile hands-on control that's missing in virtual recorder/mixers.

Studio-Quality Effects and CD-RW Drive

Right out of the box, the VS-2000CD is loaded with essential effects such as reverbs, delay, and chorus, plus dynamics processors, EQ, and more. It's also armed with Roland's COSM effects including amp and mic models. The included Mastering Tool Kit with multiband compression comes into play when you've got it all down the way you want it, seamlessly integrating with the onboard CD-RW drive.

Your Choice of Optional 3rd Party Plug-Ins

With the optional VS8-F-3 Effect Expansion Board (there are 2 expansion slots in the VS-2000CD) you can bring all the magic of plug-ins right into your V-Studio.

Helpful Tools for Better Recording

Using the new Harmony Sequence function, you can add instant harmonies to your vocal performances. The new Rhythm Track feature lets you lay down grooves on Tracks 17-18 selecting from a heap of preset drum sounds. It has a handy, built-in chromatic tuner, too.

Graphical Editing Support

By adding the VS20-VGA Output Board (with Version 2.0 software), you get full monitor and mouse support giving you all the benefits of a computer-based recording setup with none of the cumbersome limitations.

Do More with USB 2.0

Using the bundled Mac and PC conversion software you can transfer your V-Studio files to your computer in WAV or AIFF formats.

Bad Operating System/Support

I have owned this unit for over two years and am working on my third hard drive. The OS does not do disk management well, has a tendency to destroy its own index.

The unit is noisy for an all-digital platform, punch-ins are never clean, you can hear an audible click on the finished track at each punch-in.

Roland support is arrogant, treating you as if you can't program your own VCR, let alone operate this beast.

No OS can be considered well-written that requires almost daily re-formatting of its hard drive. I am constantly having to re-boot this machine.

Not a good piece of equipment, the whole VS line has now been discontinued. By an iMac instead with all the recording software and hardware interface, you'll be glad you did!

Standard Roland Quality

This unit met and exceeded my expectations. Standard Roland excellence. I own a Phantom X8 and set of their V-Drums, all together, they produce professional tracks that would have your ears believing they came out of a million dollar studio. Like some of the reviews state, the VS-2000 has lots of features, but that’s standard for Roland most of their equipment does, but if you are going to spend a few thousand dollars on studio equipment, I would hope that the equipment does come loaded with features. Also, as with any piece of high-end equipment, there is going to be a learning curve, so do not be discouraged by all of the features at first, just take some time to learn the equipment.

How to restore VS2000CD

First of all, roland's products are basically good quality. However, their customer service totally sucks. Its like trying to contact the secret service or something. Luckily, one of the sales persons at guitar center was totally helpful and went out of his way to help me fix the problem. The problem being the hard drive crashing (only after one day of use). Anyway, if any of you experience this problem, here is how to restore the vs2000 (not in any manuals!!) 1. Press and hold both snare 2 and FX2 as you are turning the power on. 2. The system should now boot up. To format drive, hold shift and press F1 which will take you to the project list. 3. Press the page button three times for “FMT DRV” and press OK. Then follow instructions as they appear on the screen.

Great project studio

This is a great unit for creating high quality demos. As another reviewer mentioned, a 96 Khz sampling rate would make me give it a 10 all around, but for home demos it has everything you need in one unit for creating very good sounding projets. I would have to say that my main gripe is having to purchace the expansion boards to run plug-ins and an LCD monitor (although Roland is sending me a free monitor for purchasing the LCD board). I purchased this product to have a portable stand-alone unit to make high quality demos and it serves that purpose very well.

The Perfect Demo..

The VS2000 is the perfect setup for producing high quality demos, or for song writing. The built in rhythm machine is highly programable and means not having to wait to get an idea down at 2am. The effects are typical, high quality Roland, expandable and very useable. The manual is good, but could be improved with more "context" for applying ideas. Overall, the portability and small footprint and ample features of VS2000 make it an absolute winner.
