A great utlity mic.

I've owned two SM27s, and they're great workhorse mics for the working musician and amateur engineer. They're very neutral and will cover a variety of bases. I've used them on vocals, electric and acoustic guitar, bass and drums, for both overheads and a kick. When using for a kick drum, even the pad switch wouldn't let me get right up next to the kick. But that is to be expected. For the price, this handles roaring guitars and whisper vocals very well.

Obviously, the better the preamp, the better your results with this mic. What's good here is that this is a mic that can do a good preamp justice. I've used a pair as overheads for drums and to record a full concert wind band. They performed well in both.

This mic is reasonably detailed and responsive to where you put it. You can really change the color of an acoustic guitar by moving it just a few inches.

My only gripe about this mic is its neutral-ness. It doesn't have that gritty character that works so well for some applications, and it doesn't have the complete airy transparency of $3,000 mic.

That said, if you're looking for a mid-budget condenser that will be your all-around go-to mic, you'd be hard pressed to find a better placed to start. As a bonus, it's well built and indestructable. You won't be afraid to use it live or for location recording. I've knocked the mic stand over a number of times, and it's come back shining as nice as the day I bought it.

I love this condenser mic from Shure, except when I got mine they only had silver, not the ultra cool black one! I bought it for recording, and it's definitely a workhorse. I record guitar, vocals, percussion - you name it - with this mic. It added so much more recording quality and I feel no need to upgrade anytime soon. Your recording space needs to be really quiet because it will pick up stuff like computer humming, the fridge, heater, etc. If you're going to put some cash toward buying a good quality condenser, I'd definitely recommend this one.

A rugged condencer for the stage

I use this large diaphram condencer on the clean cabinet in a stereo guitar rig. It's warm round sound compliments the Sennheiser 609 on the distorted side. The two sounds along with the different microphones give the FOH engineer a lot of control over the sound. The SM27 is as rock solid as the rest of the Shure SM line.
