Very solid recording device... replaces the cassette deck. You can keep recording over the minidisc hundreds of times with no loss of quality. The disc is in a casing so it doesn't scratch like a cd. the sound quality is indistinguishable from a cd, without all the issues.

Not all the bells and whistles, but most of them

An earlier version of this product had a direct PC2 keyboard input for text labeling tracks. Very handy when using this for theatrical (sound effects) sound. Wish it still had it, but hey, for this price, how can you go wrong?

Build quality is pretty good as compared to a lot of consumer electronics these days; metal chassis and gold RCA outs... not bad. Digital outs showed no signs of blimming or errorsending. Good (but not great) S/N, good (but not great) dynamic range. Easy to use as all get out. Try it; it's so simple and so cheap.

I use this unit for general audio listening. Recording from the Radio. Normally I transfer from my CD's to a portable NetMD unit. The output of portable units is not appropriate for connecting to stereos/amps. This unit is the solution for me. I did not buy the bigger MDX400 because it was pricier. However, that bigger unit has an optical output also to transfer old MDs to new ones, editing etc.

Overall the features are excellent in this unit. the JE480. It shows peak levels for input. If you record something from line in, and if you don't like the level of sound. you can amplify it and the new amplified data is rerecorded onto the disk, definitely a cool feature. Overall sound is very good. With a good receiver/speaker setup the quality is very close to CD. One can tell the difference between std recording and LP2. the lower LP4 is like 90kbps mp3 sound, I would say.

The electronic motorized loading mechanism performs really well. Inputs are line in and optical both perform well. A decent unit for the price. I do not think that I will be buying the HiMD soon. There are no home decks announced for those either. I knew that the new technology is coming out but I still bought this. I like it a lot. I hardly ever listen to CDs now. Most of my music is on LP2 mode on MD. The music that matters anyway.
