Oh, I Love It!

My friend bought me the PXR4 for my birthday in 2004 and I've cranked out tons of stuff with it! (I've even managed to get a tune on the radio, that I recorded with it!) I figured out how to use it in a matter of minutes (thanks to the quick start reference). I was so happy with some of the built in greatness like, for instance, there's a huge reverb that it has (built in, mind you)that is completely remnescent of 1960's stuff, along with a country setting that reminds me of George Harrison's guitar sound sometimes! Now, I must say that I'm a HUGE brittish pop fan, especially '60's and beyond that, I love to rip that stuff off and pretend I made it all up...now I'm going on a tangent. Sorry. Anyhow, the point is I can whip something up pretty fast with this thing and, sure it doesn't sound like todays sort of, Pro-Tools, pristine sound. However, it can capture, somehow the essence of what the sixties considered Hi-Fi and I'm very proud of that thing. It exceeds my expectations and it has become my best friend in many ways! (I don't like to kiss and tell) Way to go Korg! So overall, it's easy to use, it's self contained, it's small, it's cute, it's fast, it's friendly...and you can push it's buttons!

The sound quality of this little bugger is great. Read the manual to get a hang of things, (wich doesn't take long) and everything will be smooth sailing. Works great for recording ideas or even creating small demo projects. I mostly use this for acoustic demos and concert bootlegs. My only complaint is that the mp2 format is royally outdated. I can't find a program that recognizes this. I have to use Audacity to convert the file to mp3. If they could upgrade this, I'd definately buy another one. For what it is, it works pretty well. BTW...another input wouldn't hurt either....

You'll likely need the manual. Use is difficult at first. The buttons are in a very small area and it takes a little getting used to. If you like calculator watches, its great but this was my 1st digi recorder from cass. It burns memory pretty fast so if you get alot of ideas you want to store before DL, use the max, 128mb. Very nice sounds in this and quite a bit of flexibility once you learn how to navigate it.

I have two of these little 4-tracks now and they really are quite amazing. It's a snap to make demos and you can get a decent CD recording if you're limiting yourself to 8-tracks or so. Trying to bounce more than that is asking too much. One tip I've found useful is if you're outputting the MP2 to iTunes use the equalizer on iTunes to add 6db (in a V-curve) to fatten it up and boost volume. The onboard guitar effects are variable - some are quite good, some cheesy. The menu is a little difficult to find your way around in if you're trying to do anything mix-wise such as adding Eq, effects etc. For making demos and sketching out ideas it's terrific. The onboard microphone is impressive - sounds equivalent to the SM57s and Beta 58As I would normally use. If you set it up in front of a drum kit and record in stereo you get really a very nice spacious sound. It's a nice piece of equipment especially for the price.

I wanted a small recording studio, just to make rough demos. I didn't know much about how to record music. I have used it for a couple of years and tried to learn to master all the features. It has exceeded all my expectations (except for the time strech), the demo quality is great! My model has some limits( I don't know about the later models...) but they can be solved: It's easy to make CD:s from the MP2 files using WINAMP(freeware)+output option that converts the file to .wav. It's even possible to record the the built-in drum machine, just set the Master on 0 and connect input and output with a cord... When I get a disk error (the risk is about 1%) I just delete the latest track and I'm back in business! In my apartment there's always a lot of sound in the background, the built in mic is very good- will never buy anther one. I don't think I'll ever buy another studio either; when I get spare money I will get some better music instruments instead!
