Comments about TASCAM US-1800 Recording Package:
Overall the US-1800 recording package is a good combination of products and offers decent features to the home studio enthusiast. I recommend that package and also recommend getting a mic pre amp to help your MXL 990 and 991.
I use my Mackie 1402VLZ PRO for its incredible mic preamps and then run into the TASCAM US-1800. This is one way to get some increased performance from your microphone package...of course the other way is to open up your wallet and shell out $400 to $900 for a good microphone.
The TASCAM US-1800 is without a doubt the most boom for buck interface out there. After shopping around and doing the comparisons, it was the clear choice for an interface for someone with limited funds who wants greater input capability. Most USB interfaces have 2 or 4 XLR inputs. This unit has 8 XLR inputs and is perfect for recording drums or several mic'd instruments. The unit has Phantom power so condenser mics are no problem to accomodate.
The Cuebase LE5 software is nice too. I installed it and played around but prefer SONAR Cakewalk.
Mainly because this is where my skillset lies.
Fostex monitors have great sound reproduction and the microphones (MXL 990 and 991) aren't too shabby either.
First you can't buy a studio package that cost $550 and expect it to be everything that the $13k package is....right?
That being said, in my opinion, the TASCAM US1800 unit could have been designed to be a bit more rugged. The monitor output (plastic ring) located in the back of the unit, cracked when my kid bumped into the cable. It still works but perhaps Tascam might consider making those 1/4 inch jacks metal instead of plastic..this is a marginal cost increase and would increase the life of the unit. Besides, these kind of breaks aren't typically covered by a warranty.
The microphones are MXL (Marshal Electronics) 990 and 991 condenser mics.
They sound decent but lack the crisp studio quality of your higher end class mic (i.e. AKG, Beyer, Senheiser) still a good microphone for recording vocals.
Fostex studio monitors are very nice and reproduce a decent flat studio mix. They're small speakers so if you desire greater bass reproduction then you might consider getting larger monitors. Be ready to shell out more money too. Otherwise they will work just fine for your home studio recording needs.
The mic stands and cables are adequate. I heard a pop and crack with micing the MXL 990 plugging straight into the TASCAM US-1800. I am not sure if this is a mic cord problem or a microphone issue. to be determined...
The package is a good value. If you are looking to get a home studio set set up and running for under $1000, then this is a no-brainer.
