An affordable monitoring system for home recording and CD Trainer practice.
This self-powered TASCAM VL-S21 powered monitor satellite system provides 5W per channel to the desktop speakers and 15W to the ported sub. Remarkably thin, the stylish desktop speakers can be used nearly anywhere while taking up minimal space.
Unlike multimedia speakers designed for listening to MP3s and video games, the VL-S21 was designed with a flat frequency response for critical listening and mixing. They're ideal for home recording studios, practicing with TASCAM's CD Trainers, or monitoring desktop and laptop computer recording systems. These powered monitors were created for musicians looking for an affordable speaker system that don't take up a lot of desk space, the VL-S21 is an excellent entry-level monitoring solution.
NXT technology drivers in the left and right units allow full-range sound despite the thin housing. The NXT approach improves on the traditional woofer and tweeter design by eliminating the phase cancellation that occurs when using multiple drivers and crossovers. NXT drivers provide wider dispersion, more uniform loudness, and reduced room interaction than competing technologies. A single NXT TASCAM driver covers a wider range than traditional drivers, reducing the phase distortion caused by using multiple drivers and crossovers.

Do not buy for Studio monitoring/mix. They look great and that's it. The thinline speakers are very mid range driven, almost midrange overdrive. You get a driven bass and midrange with no quality at all on high frequencies. I got these free for buying the TASCAM 2488 so I have nothing to lose but something different to look at in my home studio. Buy the way, mine are in the shop being fixed under warranty. the subwoofer quit working after being on for 5 min. no separate adjustment between subwoofer and speakers, only one volume control on back of subwoofer. However, I do love my 95 watts Altec Lansing with five satelites and separate sub and satelite volume control.
I bought these based on a Maximum PC review. I was looking for a replacement system for my computer. I also was looking for low cost. These are just about perfect. The satellites are a bit large for the computer desk. The price is better/lower than I was preparing for and that is a good thing! My only real complaint, and it's minor, is that there is no volume control on the satellite. The volume is on the subwoofer which is under my desk. So I set it initally and then use the soundcards volume control. Not an ideal arrangement, but satisfactory. Given the excellent price it's a small trade off. The sound is truly excellent. I use it not only with my computer for everyday use but also to listen to CD music and Comcast Rhapsody streaming broadcasts. I recently purchased the Line 6 Toneport and I play guitar and bass thru that and the VL-S21 speakers. I am quite satisfied with this system and I do recommend it highly.
I got this little monitor after selling my active Tannoy Reveal Actives. I could never hear what the bass was doing with that speaker, and doing r&B, pop and rap, you've got to know what the bass is doing down there. Since I could not yet afford ADAMs or another similarly expensive speaker, I decided to get the Tascam VLS21s to tie me over until I could afford what I really wanted. This monitor system is the bomb! The smaller speakers are very balanced and very revealing. You can really tell what's going on in the mix with these. There's a nice chesty punch and the high end translates very well. The bass is very nice. And FINALLY, I can hear what's going on at 40 and 50 Hz without having a cow when hearing my music in the car or another system. The best part of this purchase was the price. I've got a great system that works very well for audio work at home. I can actually hear the bass and I haven't spent a fortune to do it. Plus, if I want to grow to a more expensive monitor in the future, I can still see me keeping the Tascams. This is a true sleeper monitor system. Go... no... run out and get this monitor system before everyone else catches on!
