Tech Tip:Home Studios of the Stars: Craig Chaquico
Studio - Lunatunes
Studio Location - Ashland, Oregon
While his friends were staring at posters and dreaming of rock stardom, Craig Chaquico was already tracking with one of the biggest rock bands of the day. Chaquico started playing with Jefferson Starship at 16 years old, beginning a tenure that lasted from 1974 to 1981 and yielded big-selling albums for the band, including Earth and Freedom At Point Zero. It wasn't long before his lead guitar work gave way to his fine songwriting, as he penned hits for the Starship including "Jane" and "Find Your Way Back." For most of his time aboard Starship, Chaquico also continued his work in his own band, Steelwind. Chaquico laid relatively low in the late '80s, but by the early '90s he was displaying his diverse talents with Acoustic Highway and Acoustic Planet. More recently, he put out Four Corners in 1999 and followed up with the Panorama compilation in 2000.
An endorser of Carvin equipment, Chaquico's studio is teaming with the manufacturer's gear, from his guitar collection to his console. Though his Lunatunes studio stands on its own, Craig collaborates across state lines with recording partner Ozzie Ahlers, who has a mirror-image studio in Novato, California. Swapping scratch MP3s over the Web, the pair works on the same equipment--same consoles, recorders, and DAW setups--so that exchanging files and digital tapes is a snap. Most recently, their teamwork produced the smooth-jazz hit "Café Carnival." Join us as we take a peak at the gear in Chaquico's Lunatunes studio.
