Hands-On Review:Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp
Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp
Live the dream
By Steve Parnell
Anyone who has ever seen their favorite band in concert knows that wonderful feeling that happens right when the lights go down--the anticipation hits its crescendo and the crowd lets loose an unbridled howl as the band walks out onstage. If you know that feeling, then you know what musicians dream about.
It's no secret, however, that the music industry is full of guys and girls pursuing this dream, and that precious few actually attain it. Although fame and fortune isn't in the cards for most of us, it doesn't mean the passion for playing goes away. Whether it's a weekend cover band or just tinkering in the garage with some close friends, we find an outlet for our love of music. If you're ready for the ultimate outlet, then Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp is where you need to be.
Personal, professional instruction
Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp is five days full of learning, jamming, and having fun. You'll be surrounded by professional players who are more than willing to share their knowledge. Your time at Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp will culminate with a Battle of the Bands show at the House of Blues in Hollywood, where you and your band will jam in front of a packed house complete with TV cameras (you'll receive a DVD with all the performances). You'll also get stage time with some of the biggest names in rock--Roger Daltrey, Cheap Trick, Neil Schon, and Dickey Betts. But let's not get too far ahead--you've got to start somewhere. Shortly after you arrive, you'll be placed in a band with other campers at your skill level--so there's no need to feel apprehensive about your playing. Everyone is welcome at Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp, even folks who don't play at all!
Over the five days of the camp, you'll be immersed in music from morning 'til night. Attend small-group classes on a number of topics, from songwriting to your main instrument. Hang out in a laid-back environment with camp counselors Jack Blades and Kelly Keagy of Night Ranger, Bruce Kulick of KISS, Simon Kirke of Bad Company, songwriter Gary Burr, keyboardist/guitarist for Great White Michael Lardie, Dokken bassist Jeff Pilson, Jerry Renino of The Monkees, Kip Winger, Elliot Easton from The Cars, guitarist Doug Fieger of The Knack, and keyboardist Vince Melamed. Spanning many areas of the industry and genres of music, each counselor has his own unique perspective for you to learn from.
In addition to the great lineup of counselors, count on special engagements with guest speakers. Last year's camp saw a performance from Colin Hay of Men at Work, a Q&A session with legendary manager Doc McGhee, and Up Close and Personal sessions with the one-and-only Roger Daltrey, singer-guitarist Nils Lofgren, Bret Michaels of Poison, and more. These special sessions will give you even more insight into the music industry, from playing tips to cool insider stories.
Band of brothers
Each day, you and your band will hone your chops for the big closer, the Battle of the Bands at the House of Blues in Hollywood! Each band will pick a cover song for the Battle with the counselors judging and a packed house anxiously awaiting your performance. The whole show is recorded, so with the cameras all around you'll really get the feel of what it's like for the pros. Following your band's song, you'll experience one of the camp's most exciting events--performing either a Who song with none other Roger Daltrey on vocals, an Allman Brothers Band song with Dickey Betts, a Cheap Trick song with the entire band Cheap Trick, or a Journey song with Neil Schon! Imagine yourself trading licks onstage with these cats and you'll understand why Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp is an experience you'll never forget.
Without a doubt, Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp is the closest thing to the big time that most of us will experience. As evidenced by the big-name sponsors of the event like Gibson, JBL, Marshall, Zildjian, Korg, and many others, this is the real thing. Not only will you jam with legends, but you'll also gain insight from them into playing, gigging, management, and every other aspect of the music industry. Start polishing your chops today and get ready for an experience that you'll remember your whole life!
