Speaker cables and guitar cables can look virtually identical, and in a pinch you've probably used one in place of the other. There are several reasons to avoid this, however. The main problem is that patch and guitar cables are configured differently.
Use a guitar cable in place of speaker cable, and you're putting excessive demands on the center conductor of your guitar cables. While OK for short periods of time, prolonged use will likely damage your amp.
Conversely, you should never use a speaker cable in place of guitar or patch cables. If you try this, you'll probably know right away that it isn't a good idea because of the obnoxious buzzing noise that's created by the lack of shielding in your speaker cable.
