TECH TIP – Signal Chains Of The Stars (Part One)

The first question we hear when audio professionals talk about recording is, "What signal chain are you using for …" In these A-Designs Studio Tips videos, producer-engineer-guitarist Ronan Chris Murphy (King Crimson, Terry Bozzio, Steve Morse), and producer-engineer-mixer Dylan "3D" Dresdow (Black-Eyed Peas, Michael Jackson, Macy Gray) talk about how they record vocals and various instruments and the equipment they prefer.

Ronan was kind enough to share some of his drum-recording signal chains: "Well, all of the drums for Terry Bozzio's Jazz trio were recorded with all A-Designs Audio solid state preamps. For drum overheads I used Shure KSM32 condenser mics into a Pacifica  to a Manley Variable Mu Limiter Compressor; for kick drums, AKG D112s into A-Designs Pacificas. I prefer the Shure Beta 52 for kick but they were premounted inside Terry's (Bozzio) kick drums. Actually I have used the Shure KSM32 into Pacifica combo on tons of great drummers, including Terry Bozzio, Victor Bisetti (Los Lobos), Gregg Bissonette (Santana, David Lee Roth), and Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mister Mister, The Rembrandts)."

Ronan also uses the Emperical Labs Distressor on drum overheads.

Though Dylan Dresdow is primarily mixing these days, when tracking acoustic guitars he uses a Pearlman TM-LE mic into the A Designs 500-Blue preamp, into the A Designs Hammer EQ, which is also his favorite EQ on the main mix bus. For electric guitar, Dylan uses the Pearlman TM-LE into the Pacifica preamp into the Hammer EQ. (You can check out the TM-LE at pearlmanmicrophones.com)
