July Cover Artist: Carlos Santana & Band

Long before "world music" was a destination at search engines across the globe or was even a genre, for that matter Carlos Santana and the band that bears his name were laying down the tracks that would pioneer a new fusion of blues, jazz, and rock with Latin and African rhythms. Now gracing our July catalog, this multitalented, multicultural group of performers took time out to meet with us while Santana wrapped up their recent concert series at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Carlos Santana's Legacy

Santana's stunning performance at the original 1969 Woodstock Festival left the world hungry for the band's exciting blend of blues-rock with Latino Afro-Beat influences and sensuous, atmospheric grooves. Led by Carlos' passionate lead guitar, cool onstage composure, and uninhibited artistic freedom, the band has taken home 10 Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards among many other honors €”evidence of their widespread influence and critical acclaim. What does Carlos enjoy most about it all? Reaching people's hearts through the directness and honesty of his playing.

The Milagro Foundation

A humanitarian to his core, Carlos' dedication to civic service is an integral part of his character. Founded in 1998 by Carlos and his family, the San Francisco Bay Area-based Milagro Foundation is an organization that helps children and youth around the world get the education and health services they need. The 'Milagro' (or 'Miracle') Foundation has done its part to combat violence, poverty, hunger, and joblessness since its inception in 1998, giving away over $5 million in grants to 350 agencies working with children and youth in 36 states and 35 countries.

Carlos believes that an investment in people is worthwhile, especially when it means a child feels less suffering and more hope. Visit to learn more or donate at milagrofoundation.org.

The PRS SE Santana Electric Guitar

Carlos Santana's influence as a PRS guitar player led to the development of the SE electric guitar series that launched in 2001. In honor of that legacy, PRS has created the all-new SE Santana guitar, the first PRS guitar in the SE series offered with a 24-1/2" scale length and also the first SE created using the same silhouette as Carlos' revered American-made PRS models. This guitar and its appointments honor Santana's skill and style and offer players great quality and value.

Carlos has surrounded himself with a team of world-class players, each bringing a wealth of professional and personal experience to breathe new life into every performance.

Cindy Blackman Santana   Jazz Drummer and Carlos' Bride

Cindy Blackman SantanaCatch Santana on tour and chances are his wife Cindy Blackman, an accomplished jazz drummer herself, will grace the stage as a guest artist. From the get-go, playing drums felt as natural as breathing to Cindy. She got her start in a musical family and went on to pursue music wholeheartedly, namely her fascination with jazz. In just a few short years, she went from busking on street corners in New York City to playing in arenas with Lenny Kravitz' band in front of 70,000 screaming fans. Soon after, Cindy was in Tinley Park, Illinois, onstage with Carlos, who proposed to her right after her drum solo. Congrats to the happy couple who wed in Hawaii last year!

Andy Vargas   Vocals

Andy VargasComposer and singer Andy Vargas first took the stage in his father's mariachi band when he was only seven years old. When he's not singing sweet melodies on Santana's stage, Andy is busy working with his band Vargas/ De La Garza, and building his DJ project the "Soul Pymps."

Karl Perazzo   Percussion

Karl PerazzoKarl Perazzo has played a variety of drums since the age of two. Since then, he's played pop, jazz, rock, and Latin music with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Prince, Mariah Carey, and John Lee Hooker. Believing that knowledge should be shared, Karl still finds the time to host clinics for the Latin Percussion Music Group.

David K. Mathews   Keyboards

David MathewsAt age 23, David K. Mathews joined the legendary funk/soul group Tower of Power, and in 1990, Dave started a lengthy gig as organist/pianist for Grammy Award-winning Queen of Rhythm & Blues, Etta James. Exclusive Interview With Carlos Santana

How does a musician develop his own distinct style?

Carlos talks about how your artistic voice takes shape, mimicking your musical heroes is a fine place to start. Although Carlos' influences fell somewhere between B.B. King and Tito Puente, he realized his unique playing style still came shining through. Carlos emphasizes that the "supreme sauce," the place from which your best stuff comes, is at the heart's center. Your music is a sentiment, after all. Give it all you've got heart, mind, and body!
