Comments about MXL 860 Side Address Ribbon Microphone:

I mic an electric guitar cab using a Vintage 30 or a Celestion Gold depending on the day. Been looking for a mic to tame out the harshness that I get from the SM57 and e609. First time I put this in front of the cab and put the headphones on I couldn't stop the huge smile - this sound is so good my mic searching days are over. The highs roll off so nicely, the low, normal, and high-mids are all clearly and thickly represented while still maintaining great clarity. Whats great is that if you really WANT those cutting highs, just dial your amp EQ up and they'll come through, but it allows you to tame harsh or cutting guitar sounds down so nicely, I really can't say enough good things about it. I'd never heard a mic-ed live guitar sound this good, ever.

Due to it being a long-ribbon, the lows are very accentuated and benefit from a 80hz cut on the sound board, but it won't kill you if you don't have that. If I could only have 1 mic this would be it. I'd trade in the 57, 609, Fathead, etc - they can all go as long as I have this mic. Best $$$ i have ever spent on a mic, and this will be my main mic for a very long time.

Comments about MXL 860 Side Address Ribbon Microphone:

I have tried well over a dozen of the MXL 860's trying to get a good one. Out of all the one's I tried, only one have I ended up keeping, however there were two others I almost kept that sounded good, but not great. The one I kept is KILLER, great low Mid-Range, Warm, Rich, Good output. Great value for the money, bought on sale. These particular ribbon mic.'s have a different & wider "Bandwidth" to their sound, as compared to the R40 and R144's.

But, I had to go through many returns to get one good one, so the manufacturing inconsistencies are ridiculous. The front and back sides of almost all of them are always different, due I supposed to the ribbons either not being taunt or maybe the transformers are inconsistent as well, not sure really..?

Generally, I am a fan of MXL Mic.'s. The R40's I bought, the same thing, you have to really work to get a good one and that means trying a bunch of them.

Musician's Friend has been great about helping me to get a good MXL 860. Which I greatly appreciate!

Comments about MXL 860 Side Address Ribbon Microphone:

Yes as I stated in another review it all comes down to taste. The MXL 860 delivered everything and more that I came to expect from a ribbon mic. Very full flat sound the top end can be equed to
grab that air and sizzle. Either a little push on the way in or detailed eq lift in your daw or sound console. Just messing around I got a very balanced bass track out of the thing I bought it for vocals but am finding a lot more uses for them ,yes them I had to buy 2 for oh applications first mic blew me away! My ART voice channel unmodded really likes this mic.

Comments about MXL 860 Side Address Ribbon Microphone:

I've used this for home studio recordings of mostly guitar cabinets: Fender creambacks, Vox Alnicos. The mic handles high sound levels and produces a nice balanced frequency spectrum with great lows and mids. I do use a curved acoustic screen around the mic to prevent the bipolar pattern from picking up room soudns.

The mic sounds good on vocals, but is extremely good at picking up silibance and pops, so I tend to use other mics for vocals. I suppose with enough distance you can use it Abbey Road style to pick up two singers.

Balanced & mellow tone. Sounds great plugged directly into my Boss BR-8 digital recorder... Sounds like a condenser had a baby with a dynamic mic. No need for phantom power which is nice. Great for drums & acoustics. Must use a pop screen for vocals though. Seems fragile but it should hold up.

Comments about MXL 860 Side Address Ribbon Microphone:

I have coveted the sound of ribbon mics for years but have been scared off by the price. This mic uses an aluminum ribbon instead of gold and is made in China so it is very reasonably priced. I have been recording tenor and bari sax with it and love the tone. It has a slight rise in the mid range. The lower end of the horn sounds full without breaking up and the high end is smooth not brash. I love it!

Comments about MXL 860 Side Address Ribbon Microphone:

I don't know how it compares to the Royer 121 but it sure is a pleasure to use on a guitar cabinet. I have tried everything in my finance range. I usually go direct with a Line 6 product. But things have changed now. I finally can get the sound of my amp on a recording. The high end is nice and smooth. The low end is good, I had to adjust my amp a little bit. Overall, it was a good purchase. I plan on getting another one soon. This mic has a lot of detail. I bet it will sound good on vocals. I didn't need to eq anything. It reproduces exactly what you put into it. My amp sounds better now that I have readjusted it for this mic.
