Bought this model becuse it is phantom powered and it seemed to match up nicely with a large condenser mic I have for recordings. Because it is a figure 8 pattern you can 'corner load' and get reflected ambient sound as well as direct off the front, side rejection is very good. Nady advises to check for 'tensioning' on the aluminum ribbon by plugging it in and flipping it back and forth, so I did it passed. This is the drawback to a velocity ribbon mic, it is what it is, there is some fragility to its design so it is to be expected. It comes in a really stout cardboard box with high density foam surrounding a heavy duty padded/zippered cordura 'gig bag' that stands the mic up on its own (they need to be kept upright in storage). I have never seen anything packed quite like this LOL. That needs to be a tip off, its packed better than most fine porcelain statues for shipping. I have to wonder though, this is a vintage microphone design and has been used extensively in recordings and studios (think the old mics seen on announcer's desks)for close to 100 years. While more fragile than a dynamic or condenser no doubt, this Nady RSM-8A Velocity Ribbon Mic seems pretty robust in its overall construction. The swivel holder that mounts it is unlikely to cause premature release unlike some basket designs. I've mounted it on a boom stand and while it can occasionally be a little awkward I have managed to position it right where I've wanted each and every time. Used with a Tascam DR008 it has a very full satisfying warm vintage sound both for vocals and acoustic guitar, direct into a ProTools Mbox2 interface to Propellerheads Reason/Record DAW gave stellar results as well. I suspect that using it with a tube pre-amp will have very good results, just haven't gotten around to it yet. This is a very different animal than the dynamic or condenser mics (both large and small)that I have. There is a definate 'proximity effect' in that as you move in closer to the mic it will increase the bass response. Nady reccomends a pop screen to give added protection to the ribbon and I purchased one of those as well. Placing the back so it points to a rooms corner a foot or so away and then recording off the front a foot or two away gives a nice loading effect for an acoustic guitar. This mic is REALLY sensitive and it will pick up anything and EVERYTHING close to it. I had to turn a fan off in another room because it was being picked up. This was a great purchase and really adds a new range of color to my palette. I have to wonder why it took me so long to get one of these terrific mics.
