Comments about Seymour Duncan SP90-2 Hot Soapbar Pickup:

As a dyed in the wool P-90 lover, I was a little hesitant to go with a P-90 quite this hot. However, I am quite pleased with the voice of this SP-902b in my exceptionally bright Faded SG Special(yes, it's heavily modified with P-90's instead of humbuckers).

The good: it definately adds muscle to a guitar with a tendency to be a little too bright and anemic in the bridge position. Mississippi Queen on this pickup kills, frankly.

The bad: this pickup does not clean up as well as a vintage voiced P-90. You sacrifice some of the old P-90 high end for warmth and muscle, though it blends quite well with the Gibson P-90 in the neck for some wonderful jazzy clean tones.

Also, as a plastics injection molder, I was a little miffed to see blushing on the pickup's cover. Not a big deal for a guitar that ain't so pretty to begin with, but production flaws like that should not be on a cosmetic part like a pickup cover. Points off for that. Need to check up on your Plastics and Quality Control departments, Seymour...

In short, this is overdrive loving rocker's P90, not a pickup to play rockabilly on. It will never take the place of the vintage P-90 in my '50's Les Paul Junior, but it's perfect for a modern SG that needed some girth in the bridge position.

Good pickup.

Absolutely Awesome

Comments about Seymour Duncan SP90-2 Hot Soapbar Pickup:

I could not be happier with this pickup. The sound is amazing. The high output and smooth tone make it a must-have for anyone replacing a P-90 type pickup. I like this pickup so much, I have approached Seymour Duncan about making one in the dogear configuration for my Les Paul Junior.
The SP90-2 has everything I look for in a pickup...wires, magnets, pole pieces and a cover. What more does one need?
I have not had one issue with this pickup since the day I had it installed.
This pickup is cheaper than the pickup it is designed to replace. Not sure if copyright applies here, but the name of the company starts with G, ends in ibson.

Hot bridge

Comments about Seymour Duncan SP90-2 Hot Soapbar Pickup:

I had to replace a dead bridge soapbar pickup on my Ibanez Jetking. After searching in vain for an identical replacement I settled for this. I wasn't sure if it would fit or not, but it did. It was 100% improvement in sound over the original and sounded very good with the Ibanez neck pickup. You can further modify your sound by changing the pots according to the directions.

Much better sound than stock p-90 for rock & blues

Comments about Seymour Duncan SP90-2 Hot Soapbar Pickup:

I bought these pickups to replace the stocks in my 2001 Gibson SG Classic. They are much hotter than the originals. One misconception is that these are noisy period. I have found they are quite "quiet" using a clean tube amp. Using distortion, is a different story. They are single coils, so there is not much you can do about it using either the neck or bridge alone with distortion. But one of the coils is reverse wound so in the middle position, it is quiet. I am thinking of replacing the stock P-100's in my Les Paul Special with these. The only thing the P-100's have on these is that they are always quiet. Somehow, Gibson lost the P-90 sound in their P-100's. The P-100's have no bite. Overall, these are great replacement pickups for stock P-90's if you play hard rock, blues or punk.
